I wanted to love these pants. I loved the fit and giant side pocket. However I have warn them climbing three times twice up the north ridge route on Bancroft and then took them on an expedition and wore them up the north face of mt. Kenya. They are not holding up. Anywhere my harness or pack touched is severely abraded it looks like I took steal wool to the surface and had a party. I was hoping they would last at least three seasons but I will be lucky if they make it to the end of this season. MH and the rest of the outdoor companies seem to have dropped durability as these types of clothes have become more of an aesthetic for people who don’t actually use them as intended. Please don’t drop your quality I need gear I can depend on when I’m climbing.
I’m 5’2, 27” waist, athletic build with a bit of a booty. Usually size 4 in pants/shorts. My other size 4 MH pants were too loose at the waist so I upgraded to these. I LOVE the material and the fit could be flattering if it were smaller. Usually MH pants makes me feel womanly while maintaining comfort and agility for climbing, backpacking or camping. The cinch buckle belt is a must/have for me - I hate the inside drawstring style so many women’s pants have nowadays. On all those fronts, these pants are awesome! Only complaint, is they’re still too loose at the waist. I got the XS (0-2), but the waist fits more like a 29” and the material is already stretchy as it is. With the cinch belt, it’s an easy fix I suppose, but it’s frustrating not to be able to downsize. I am certainly not the tiniest woman I know. Can’t imagine what actual size 0 or 2 women would wear. I also got the regular instead of the petite, so I wonder if that contributed to waist size. I prefer that fit to leave room in length for boots, though. I still love MH pants but not sure that I will keep them.
I tend to destroy alpine climbing pants pretty quickly. With all the deadfall in the woods from pine beetle kill, the hikes alone often do in pants from all the snags on off-trail hiking. The Chockstone Alpine Pants have been super durable on the trail and rock, but have also been great with their water resistance. Having climbed a lot of wet, early-season ice this year, the pants have shed water easily and kept me dry even after the top of an ice pillar collapsed and I fell directly into the waterfall.
I bought these last season and recently wore them on a snowshoeing adventure. I wore a medium hiking pack that was only weighted with about 10 pounds, however the pants completely pilled up on the upper waist section of the back, near the waist. Super disappointing that the material would show suck wear after the first time out. MHW, this seems like defective fabric.
I have another quite a few things from MH but this one is making me upset - It is not that nice on your skin when it's warm and you don't have base layer - No ventilation zip - please make one women version of soft shell with good half zip vents on sides! On Denali lower glaciers you are dreaming about more air... - Quality of some parts, mostly top of pants - material is "rolling" and not resistant - Big nice pocket (even a bit too big for my phone) on the right pant but I would add side pocket on another side, smaller one for lipstick etc. When you have harness, several layers, its hard to reach other pockets on hips and you cannot put there much - you have backpack hips buckets all around there as well Otherwise it has potential to be a good pair if you can fix all that. Let me know - happy to test, looking for good pair of tall soft shell pants for years for ice climbing\expeditions\spring skiing\mixed climbs.
We're sorry to hear you don't like the design but thank you for leaving us your thoughts! We certainly appreciate the feedback.
I just bought these pants last week. First trip out to Mt Baker. Wore them for a total of 3 days. First impression was FABULOUS. The pockets are large and the zippers run horizontal, not vertical (which irritates fiercly when they run over my hips). The hip pockets are a little high for my liking but made it work. Sizing runs large. I am 5'4" and 140 lbs. Size SM is too big (baggy and have to use the belt) so I would need an XS. However, after my first trip with them, the material used for the upper part of the pant is NOT resistant to anything. As you can see in the photos, it started pilling immediately. For alpine/mountaineering pants, I am dissapointed. I have many different brands of same fabric that are years old and have never started pilling. I wanted to love these pants but they need to be constructed differently especially in areas where a harness would be. Please fix that and I would buy a pair. For now, these are being returned.
Finally a pair of women's activity pants with a natural waist and built in belt..durable, strong holding snap and a velcro interior tab keep these pants at the waist all day long no matter what I am doing. Thank you MH for making pants that fit at the waist, I'm so over the mid and low rise pants. Agree with another reviewer that the belt is a nice addition - drawstrings are a big drag. Absolutely love the fit and the material. Look slick enough that I can wear to office..very flattering especially the "Buns"! I haven't had them on the trail or in the rocks but I am guessing from the material they will be super strong. 5'8 150 lb long legs. Love um!
Trekked in these pants in Nepal for two weeks, would give it 15⭐️ out of 5 if I could. Yes, there’s minimal cosmetic piling where other reviews have pointed out. To me, that’s negligible. On the positive side: they fit awesome, magically adjust to temps from upper 20s in the upper elevations to 90s in rainforests in the valleys, stay put when rolled up, stay down when keeping out leeches, dry whilst hiking and overnight even in unheated lodgings, and, best of all, drop mud as soon as it dries and look and smell awesome after 14 consecutive long days of sweaty activities. Never knew pants like this existed. Thanks, MH!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm a size 2 with a 28-30"ish inseam. The short wasn't available, so I ordered the xs regular - they've got a little extra length but nothing crazy. The light army is a little more green than it shows up online - I'm into it! MHW you might want to consider extending sizing to xxs - these would be too big for sizes 0/00.
Wind and water resistant. I love how the pockets are set up which is hard to find on a women’s pant. I’m 5’5 and 120lb and the XS was perfect and allowed room for two vase layers under. If you’re not going to layer definitely size down. The XS would be way too big to wear without layers underneath.
