I finally got a grip
I've never worn shoes with so much grip. So far, on them, one 3 day and one long day hike, both with constant in and out of water movement. They are super comfortable and oddly stylish, I've had to force myself to remember I need to dedicate their use for wet outdoors. It took a bit to get used to a hiking shoe with hardly any padding, but I learned, even on AZ rock, padding was not necessary to safety or comfort. I can move fast in and out of creek and still not slip in between.
Good, but flawed as a water shoe.
This is an incredible travel shoe. Lightweight, compact, easy to pack - awesome. I even put an orthotic in them if I’m just walking around town. As a water shoe also great, BUT they are not good in any environment with sand. The material of the tongue collects sand and the heal cup, which is nice and padded (great for comfort!) BUT the heel material is not fully stitched to the heel cup, so sand gets heavy deposited in this space. It’s impossible to rinse out and I’m left with crunchy sand embedded behind my heel, which is not comfortable to say the least. It’s so bad, I’m wondering if that non-stitching is a manufacturing defect.
Fantastic shoes for any occasion
I am on my fourth pair! I wear them almost every day. This past weekend wore them kayaking and on a 10 mile hike that was rated as strenuous. There were multiple water crossings on the hike and I was very glad I had shoes that drained the water within seconds Outstanding shoes for any occasion.
Painful and rough on the inside, color was off too
The material rubbed the skin right off the top of one toe and gave me blisters on the tops of my feet in 3 places. Super harsh and rough material on the inside for a water shoe impossible to wear without thick socks or iron skin. The grey color was also way more blue in real life not sure if that's my phone making it look grey but in reality it was a blue color.
Loved- But crease rubbed toes
I loved the looks of these shoes and really tried very hard to keep them but I could not get passed the design that caused me discomfort on both feet. The issue is when the shoes flex forward they create a fold in the top outside of the shoe that rubs the top of my pinky toe. This happens on both feet. I take a size 8 1/2 so tried both an 8 and a 9. The 8 rubbed the middle of my toe while the 9 rubbed slightly higher. I am very disappointed that I have to return them. Perhaps the design can be revisited by Astral to address this issue. All feet are different so I hope they work out for you!
Worth every penny!
I don't usually leave reviews on anything (certainly now footwear), but I felt like I needed to share my experience with these Astral's. We were getting ready for a trip to Costa Rica and I needed some footwear that would work in all kids of conditions. I've tried Teva-like sandals in the past and I just don't find them comfortable, so I've used old-school sperry boat shoes in the past, but those aren't super ideal for all the stuff we were going to do on our trip. Anyway, I came across these and I'm glad I did. I find them extremely comfortable to walk in and they grip really well on wet surfaces. I thought the little holes at the front and back would be kind of useless on clearing out the shoe from water, but they actually worked really well. Honestly, I really love these shoes.
Swiss Army Knife Shoe
This was my go to shoe for a trip to Costa Rica, where we hiked in the rainforest and cloud forest, explored beaches, paddled in lakes, swam in rivers, and then cleaned up for meals. I wore my Astral Loyak’s in all of those situations and they performed well each time. I never wore socks and only developed one blister but that was after a 5 mile hike in the rainforest. On my next trip where I need to bring one shoe, this one will be it!
Kinda disappointed
I was really hoping to absolutely love these. I feel like they are great shoes, but the sizing is big and the toe box isnt that wide for shoes that advertise have room for toes to spread. I wear a 9 in everything but these I would definitely want an 8.5 BUT they dont make half sizes. I would try the 8 but I'd be worried the toe box would be smaller. These are wide enough that it doesnt squeeze my toes together but they dont have enough room for my toes to spread. I'm going to keep them and break them in. Maybe try to shrink them in the sun and hope I can get a good fit out of them. I was really hoping for something I loved right off the bat.
Buy Merrell or Salamon
Don't waste your $$- or time- since you'll prob want to return these "water shoes" as I did. The laser cut siping on the soles make for incredibly pliable shoes that DO GRIP, but makes them very delicate as well. I would have absolutely wrecked the Astrals in under a month! Also, these shoes were not as easy as other water shoes from merrell and salamon that I've owned and loved over the years. Lastly, my Astral insoles drained/dried considerably worse than ANY of the handful of purpose-built water shoes I've enjoyed over the past decade. The absolute best water shoes I've come across are the men's Choprocks from Merrell- I've owned 3 pairs and would never buy anything else if they still made them- that goes for normal everyday shoes as well!
Astral water shoe; fishing/stream crossing/camp
I bought these of all the wade fishing I do. For comparison in many areas, here is where I have used them; weekly a few times a week in limestone bed rivers and creeks in central PA (freshwater), Assateague bay with packed sand bed (saltwater), intercoastal waterways in NC (saltwater), and various lakes, ponds in PA, MA, NY, etc (freshwater). Here is what I have found. Sand will collect in your shoes in saltwater, so I find myself picking up my feet and acting like a stork and waving/shaking my foot under the water to allow the sand to come out of the toe holes. The sand issue can also be attributed to me shuffling my feet when I walk to scare rays. Limestone - perfect. They are grippy, tight enough around the ankle to not let debris in, and absolutely amazing. Muddier bottoms - like lakes; They stay on your feet great, but who likes walking in soft muddier beds under water. The good: The insoles are great and slide right in and out. I take them out after each use and let the shoes dry. The insoles are a rubber/silicone. They dry super quick. In the summer this is a few times a week. The drain holes are perfect. Well thought out placement. The shoes fabric dries daily. I have never had issues with them being smelly, or still super wet when I put them back on. I also leave them in the sun al the time and they have held up for the whole fishing season. I also bring them backpacking and knowing the area, if I need to stream cross frequently, I'll wear them. I also use them for camp shoes. I wouldn't hike more than a few miles in them. They have limited insole support. But its a water shoe. How they stood up mechanically; There are no issues with the seams, the laces are not fraying, or the shoe falling apart. I have seriously spent at least 150 hours actually wearing these IN WATER walking, wading, abusing. They have no issues and aren't even close to falling apart. I'll be shocked if I don't get at least 3-5 seasons out of them. The meh. Because there are no bad points for me. It does need a but more arch support. But seriously, it's a water shoe. I previously wore old trail running shoes in the water. Overall I love this shoe.
