Narrow width was not anticipated
I love Astral shoes, but a shoe that does not fit is not worth wearing. Anticipating the foot bed would be like the 9.5 Astral Donner I own (and admittedly do not have much room to spare at the toe), I ordered size 10 Brewer 2.0s. It gave me the additional room so as not to worry about jamming my toe into the end of the shoe when walking down a steep slope. Sadly, despite being a half size bigger than I normally would wear, the width at the insole is less than the Donners (despite the outsoles width being almost identical). Although I would not characterize the Donners as having a lot of support for my high arched feet, the support at the arch of the Brewers also feels slightly lower. I really like the collapsible heel and the mesh in the vamp of the shoe to aid drying, but they have to go back.
Not with expedited shipping
Stitches were weak, 24 hours and they were blown. Used them around camp and paddling for a few hours. Comfy yes. Durable no.
Pros and cons
These shoes look great! The traction is solid in wet and dry environments. However, as water shoes, there are only drains in the front and rear, so drainage is poor. I have to angle my foot up or down to get them to drain, and they stay a bit squishy for a while. The toe boxes have an odd indentation near the balls of my feet. I’m not sure if I’m going to keep them.
Best Summer Sneakers
Been looking for a sneaker that is lightweight, comfortable but that also looks good and can handle outdoor adventures (on and off the trail as well as in and out of the water). The Astral Brewers can do it all. The wider toe box and zero drop design allow for the foot to move in the way its supposed to. And Astral's famous grip delivers, especially when the rocks get wet by the water. I also dig the skate-inspired look.
Fantastic River Rock Shoe
I've been barefoot my entire like, NEVER have I found a shoe that grips better on wet surfaces than this shoe. The material wears easier because it's eco friendly. The shoe is amazingly comfy, I have wide feet and they are plenty wide enough. Excellent water shoe or city shoe (kitchens or slick surfaces). Absolutely love me pair, even though after a year they are kinda worn.
Do not recommend
I'll keep this pithy. The right shoe was narrower than the left shoe, there is obviously an issue with manufacturing and quality control. There is no arch support, and I did not feel sure-footed walking in these shoes. The quality of the material of the shoe seemed to be cheap. I only wore these shoes in the house, the soles do not seem suitable for the river. These were not comfortable shoes to walk in.
THIS IS THE BEST SNEAKER EVER!!
I've worn every version of the Brewer since the original launch in 2012, which was certainly made easy because I work at Astral. However, despite my affiliation, I can truly say "THIS IS THE BEST SNEAKER EVER" at least for 3 seasons of the year ...anyways, some things I love about the Brewer. 1. Street ready. I wear them daily as a causal shoe. Lightweight, breathable, stylish. 2. They are completely ready to play in the water with all the attributes of a great river shoe (specifically grip, quick dry) 3. Padded interior on the Brewer 2.0 was a great upgrade. In summer I rock them without socks everyday. Polygiene treatment keeps the odor and funk down. Add socks for extra warmth or comfort. 4. Fold down heel is not a gimmick y'all, its truly amazing. The Brewer doubles as a slipper for quick entry. As far as sizing I am a 12.5 and find the 13's to be spot on. The wide toe box and narrow mid section and heel fits my foot absolutely perfectly. As far as durability they hold up great as my daily driver. After kayaking in Brewers for many years I recently switched to Hiyaks for a lower profile fit in the boat, and more ankle support. But I still find my Brewers the go-to when I am not sitting inside a whitewater boat (ie canoe, fishing kayak, or inflatables) and daily life off the river. If I was forced to pick one shoe to wear the rest of my life, the BREWER is that shoe. No question.
Too narrow/fit is off
I wear a women's 10 so I purchased a men's 9 hoping they would be wide enough (the women's are very narrow). These, too, were far too narrow and generally too small. The fit is wildly off in general. Bummer.
Cheaply made
Astral claims these shoes are “true to size”. Don’t believe it. These shoes run 3/4 to a full size small. The uppers material appears poorly made and not a durable fabric. The drain holes are way too small to drain water quickly. Crummy attempt to manufacture a water shoe by a small company competing with other legacy brands.
Way too narrow, weird fit
Decent concept, terrible fit if you have wide feet. Astral needs to make this in an E or EE width, as fit is really strange, fairly wide in front of the toe box but tight around the side of the base of the big toe. Couldn't wear them for 15 minutes without it becoming painful.
