Worked great strapped to rack
We took this on an epic 4000-mile road trip strapped to a roof rack and had no trouble with it. We crammed a lot into it (not sure why you'd even need this if you weren't going to fill it up), including some hard-shell suitcases. It worked great to cram/smush pillows and softer bags on top. It was a bit of a chore to empty it out each night when we stayed at a hotel, but wasn't hard to store and re-set the carrier itself. Gas mileage was a little down with it on top, but not by much, and no noise/distraction having it up there. Haven't tried it hooking the straps to the doors yet, but at least strapped to a roof rack it's a great option.
near catastrophic failure
Purchased in Colorado Springs. immediately starting tearing apart on the way to Las Vegas. First the velcro sections came off the flap which covers the zipper tabs when fully closed. Thought it was odd these appeared only glued and not stitched. After first day of driving (about 6 hours) front passenger sider corner started separating at seam. The next day, longer section of separation along seam on rear driver side corner. Again, appears to be glued with no stitching to reinforce. Made it home without complete catastrophic failure with items strewn about the interstate. 821 miles trip. I returned item asap. REI staff member seemed to understand how this was egregiously below REI quality standards. While return was effortless, I gotta say I am surprised...er uh...shocked, these are still available; esp considering potential loss of valuable items, not to mention liability if flying objects strike other vehicles or cause an accident.
Not for long trips
I bought this as a last resort when moving to Mexico and my car was full. I packed it full with the extra pillows and blankets and a duffel bag (nothing with sharp corners). The straps/clips it comes with I wouldn’t even trust for a short ride as they only hook into your weather stripping. I had to buy come along straps to hold it. By the end of only 2 days there was a hole in the top corner.
Better than expected!
This bad boy worked like a champ! Went to REI to find a top of the car luggage bag. Found this and contemplated the fit on our Mini Cooper. You see, this was “mini-van” size. As I was walking around the store, Evan from the NJ store stopped me and shared that he had the exact one on his compact car and he used it all of the time. Sold! Fast forward to getting it home and on the car. This basically covered the roof of our Mini. I was a little skeptical, but filled it to the gills and strapped it down for our thanksgiving road trip. To sum up: worked perfectly. Stayed tight and stable at highway speeds. Kept everything dry. A little wind noise and the front flapped up a little, but I fixed it with planned packing for the trip back home. No discounts applied, but we’ll worth the full price.
Hard to handle, but worth it.
I've had this bag over a year now. I have to be upfront - this isn't an easy bag to deal with for one person. The 5 star is because it doesn't leak, it's sturdy, it fits a ton of stuff, and stays on the car. TIPS: Do NOT use the straps with your car door. Use your rack. I'm 5'11 & have an Outback & I carry a small, portable step stool to get stuff in and out. Practice loading it before your trip. Use a small amount of WD40 on the zippers before packing, while still new. Use a pair of pliers to pull the zipper a few times before you pack until it's pliable and easier to zip. It can scratch your roof; I have a Yakima basket. I haven't had a problem with the Velcro or glue melting yet like other reviewers. I can't afford the whole roof rack system & this is working, but it takes some work.
Only functional if fully packed
If this isn't very fully packed it doesn't work well, it will catch wind, move around, tap, wobble, shuffle everything inside. Don't put anything slightly breakable. And if you buy it make sure it super packed. Is very good in rain though, and hot dusty weather. Also bag some times slides around on roof and I have a flat roofed car. Bag use is easy straight forward straps on the other hand are a pain.
Let's See
Where do I start. We followed the directions. I really wanted this to work, but it did not. It came undone at 70mph and the material along the zipper tore away. It was tied to a roof rack. It also has a rough underside that scratched the new Lexus. Lesson learned. You get what you pay for. I bought a Thule and love it. And now I don't have to try and collect my underoos from I-90. I'm still missing my brand new giraffe boxer briefs so if WSDOT sees them......
Inexpensive option for roof top cargo space.
We recently purchased some Thule crossbars for our Jeep JL. We wanted some roof top cargo space, but didn't have much room for a cargo basket (garage height) or to store a cargo box (overall garage space). The Rightline gear bag was perfect for our needs. We're currently in the middle of a Pacific Northwest trip and it has held up well to highway speeds and rain.
Nope
Two hours in the Wisconsin sun and the glue on the velcro flap gave away. It took in water shortly thereafter but didn't get to anything that I can't dry out.
Perfect for occasional extra cargo room
Was helping my recent college graduate move out of her off campus apartment and realized that we were going to be short on space in my station wagon. I guess I had conveniently forgotten that we had stored a lot of her things over the summers and that what I thought was a recent slight downsize in vehicles was a bigger change than I had bargained for. Anyway, off to REI we went. While I went to the store open to getting a rack and a hard-sided pod, this bag seemed like a good (and much less expensive/complex) solution. Happy to report it did the job. We loaded it essentially as full as it would go and were able to fit everything we needed to thanks to extra space afforded by the bag. Did not notice that much additional wind noise nor much of a change in gas mileage or vehicle dynamics. Also did not have to deal with much precipitation, so can't report on weatherproofness. IMO, if you only need additional cargo space — for primarily soft items — on occasion, this bag is a great alternative to hard-sided pods. I picked this one because it had the most volume of the bags available that day.
