Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Light, warm, still kind of a mummy bag.
I think most outdoor gear is built around the idea that you're a 20-something beanpole. So, when Nemo markets this as roomy and accommodating, keep that in mind. It's roomy and accommodating--if you're a beanpole. If you aren't in that particular demographic, expect it to be tight and confining. It isn’t nearly as awful as a traditional mummy bag in which you can not move a single centimeter in any direction. I can sleep in this without claustrophobic nightmares, and that alone beats most of the competition. But, if you are expecting “roomy” and you aren’t a beanpole, you will be disappointed. It isn’t roomy, it’s tolerable. Otherwise, I don’t think you’ll get much improvement over this sleeping bag in terms of lightness, warmth, and price. You can spend a lot more for something lighter or warmer, or you can spend less for something heavierk. Also, unlike some sleeping bags that give you a minimum temperature at which, basically, you will be very uncomfortable but won’t freeze to death, Nemo errs on the side of comfort. One night with this sleeping bag I had thick ice on vegetation under my tent’s rain fly, but I was warm and snug. I did not put on the thick woolly socks, I did not wake up at night feeling chilly and check if the zipper would go any higher or try to cinch up the hood, I was simply warm and did not have to worry or think about it in any way whatsoever. My mind was free to worry about all the possible calamities that do not involve cold. Further, after a night or two I opened up the “Thermo Gills” (the name doesn’t really matter but, still, could there be a worse name?) and found that the warmth of the sleeping bag was entirely undiminished but the room around my shoulders & torso was substantially increased. So, if you aren’t a beanpole, just unzip those all the way and don’t think twice about it. You will still be as warm as before, but not as claustrophobic. I’m not sure why Nemo didn’t just omit the zippers and make the sleeping bag a bit more comfortable as its default state. In any case, I was looking for the “not too expensive, but not too chilly” sweet spot, and I think Nemo pretty much nailed it. Five out of five stars on that. If you want something more comfortable than a mummy bag, that’s a win as well. If you want something roomy enough to be actually comfortable rather than just not as bad as a mummy bag, well… it doesn’t really get there. If I’m not schlepping the thing across the mountains, there is no question I would rather a rectangular bag than this one.

Disappointed to get a bag 11oz heavier spec!
One of the primary reasons I purchased this bag (Forte 20 Long) was because it looked like a great balance of comfort and warmth, without sacrificing too much weight at 3lbs, 2oz. When the product arrived, though it did appear to be roomy and comfortable, I decided to put it on the scales since it 'felt' heavier than my existing bag. Sure enough, the bag weighed in at 3lb 13oz, 11 oz (20%) heavier than advertised. I sent a request to Nemo support asking if I possibly had a defective bag. They responded stating that the stuff sack (which was 3.2oz) shouldn't be included in the weight and that the remaining 8 oz, fell within their spec variance... but that I should feel free to send it in for them to inspect it if I wanted. 8oz off is within spec, seriously? And why suggest that I send it in if it's expected? I expected more from a trusted outdoor brand. (In the end, I purchased the REI Magma 15 Long. With stuff sack, weighed in exactly as advertised at 1lb 14 oz)

10 degree weather in Sierra nevada mountains

April 2022 I just Slept in a very rustic cabin in Sierra Nevada mountains temps got down to 10 degrees, though i had a wood stove to start the night off , the coals were nonexistent by early morning, with my nemo slleping bag and i might add the addition of the mummy liner adding 8 degress of warmth, i was able to be very comfortably warm. (till i had to get up and start the woodstove up again.

compression size

I wanted to provide information about compression since this bag is synthetic and size is generally a question for buying a bag that is not made with down. The sleeping bag comes with a compression sack and the cylinder compresses to approximately 12 by 8. As you can see from the picture, that is at the widest points. I opted for the men's bag as I preferred the way I "fit" in it. If I had realized that the women's bag could zip together with the men's, I probably would have opted for the women's so I could zip up with my sweetie into a double bag. Overall, I find the bag very comfortable. I have not stayed overnight in cold weather so cannot attest to the temperature rating.

Spacious, soft and warm

Received free product

This sleeping bag is really good. I wouldn’t select it for an ultralight trip, but anything else where temperatures are 20’s-50’s at night and it’s a great option. I used it in a hammock and again in a tent. It took some time to make a couple trips up North. Temperatures were low-50’s and low-40’s, respectively. The bag is comfortable. Even when warm, the fabric is soft and non-clingy. In addition, rolling over, and over, is made easy because of the extra roominess, in area between waist and shoulders. Typically, at night, due to moderate discomfort, my mind wanders an hour or so before falling to sleep....not with this system.

Excellent Bag with plenty of room

I took a while over-analyzing reviews to make sure if I was going to spend the money on a good bag I would be making the right choice. I am completely satisfied as this bag was great. First night out the temps were low 30s and slept in just my shorts and no shirt and was plenty warm. I'm 6 foot 180 pounds so the spoon shape worked great for me and I did not feel squeezed in. Also, the fabric is extremely soft and cozy. I saw some reviews about having problems with a zipper... Either Nemo fixed it or they don't know how to use a zipper because mine worked perfectly fine. If you're looking for a bag that packs fairly well and you do not want to spend 500 bucks this is the bag for you.

Excellent Sleeping Bag

I bought this sleeping bag for a three night camping trip with night time lows of 32F, 42F and 48F. This bag was very warm at 32F; I slept in a single layer of fleece/wool and had plenty of leg room. The hood and wonderful blanket fold/flap are well designed. At 32F you need most of your face covered and this combination makes it possible. At 48F, I didn't need to fully zip in and I opened the Thermo Gills, which are handy. Having always slept in a mummy bag, I was skeptical of the classic spoon shape but it really does work. I like to sleep on my side with one knee pulled up and this bag makes it possible. With a good pad, you almost feel like you're in your own bed. Well done!

Happy with my purchase!

I've only used this bag for one, three night trip but so far am very happy with the purchase. I tend to toss and turn a lot at night and get tangled up inside other mummy style bags with small foot boxes. With this bag, I can move around inside the bag without it twisting up around me. I'm 5-7 and 155 lbs. so, not the largest person. The temps at night were in the mid 30's F. I was fine with socks, a stocking cap and long underwear. I found that I like the "thermal gills" and the bib thing. I don't think I'd be comfortable at 20 degrees F. It came with a nice storage bag, and stuff sack. I like the lighter weight and that it stuffs down fairly small.

Nice features but slept cold

My first trip with this bag was car camping in South Dakota in late March. The bag is comfortable especially for side sleepers and people who like extra room. I had it on top of a nemo 3D cosmo air pad with expectations of high 20s low 30s in temperature. Our first night fell to 19F and I could not stay warm. All other nights stayed around 28F and I was perfectly comfortable. The cinch cords for the hood take getting used to but once you figure it out, it works pretty good to seal a draft out. I would not take this on another cold trip but it will be my workhorse 3 season bag for its space and neat features.

A bit heavy, but very roomy and warm

Let me start by saying that I am pleased with the bag. The only real drawbacks are that it's a little heavy, but I suppose that is to be expected at this price point. And the zipper will occasionally snag if being zipped from the outside. I've had the bag out in temps around freezing, in a damp environment. In fact, during my last trip I woke up to freezing rain. The bag performed well. That night, I slept in running shorts, ankle socks, and a t-shirt, with the vents open and the draft collar out. I stayed warm all night. Granted, I'm a warm sleeper, but to be comfortable at or below the advertised comfort rating without wearing a long base layer is always nice.

Gear Failure

After reviewing hundreds of sleeping bags I ended up purchasing the Nemo Forte as my first ever bag. I used it a handful of times but I couldn’t get used to how constricted I was in the bag and I’m only 5’6” 195 lbs. I was never able to zip the bag all the way up and that allowed the cold air to creep in during the night and the outside temps were in the low 40’s, well within the comfort level of the bag. I just finished a recent trip to the mountains but had to to leave a day early because the zipper failed and now I cant close the bag at all. The zipper failed in the middle of the night and I froze my tail off. Now I have a bag that cant be used.
