Gobs of stopping power
I'm coming from the guide r brake which would experience some fade on long decents. These brakes have been excellent and there's essentially no difference between this and the more expensive xt. This is my first higher end Shimano brake but I've ridden the older saints before. These do not have that on/off feel that those had which is a good thing. I do have a tip for installation as this comes with no documentation whatsoever. It comes with a spare barb but not an olive (the olive is already inside the lever) so figure out how long the line should be and cut it first if it's too long, making sure it's a straight clean cut. Install the spare barb then you just shove the line in to the lever and tighten the screw and stop when the line starts to turn with the screw.
Should Have Upgraded Immediately!
Coming from Guide R brakes which had a wandering bite point, brake fade, and sticky pistons to the SLX has been night and day. Installation was straight forward, bleeding is a piece of cake, but most importantly - These brakes stop really well. Incredibly reliable and great on long descents. I use these for everything from trail riding to lift-served bike parks and they have given me no issues after a few hundred miles.
Great Product, Missing Product Info In Description
Product is fantastic, no gripes there! The only criticism I have is the product description does not include what brake pad material comes with the brake set (it’s metallic BTW). The rotors I have are compatible with resin pads only, resulting in purchasing new rotors. Please update the product description to include the brake pad material.
Excellent Brakes
Upgraded my mechanical brakes to these SLX brakes and couldn’t be happier. I did the install and initial bleed myself. It was my first time and fairly straight forward. You will need to go to the Shimano website to see the complete dealer manual since they are a paperless company and there won’t be any instructions in the package. The dealer manual is 61 pages and very detailed. Once you get them installed and remove all the air from the line, you will be able to make your tweaks to the lever. The braking process is so much smoother and powerful! I don’t know how 2 piston calipers perform over mechanical 2 piston setups, but I’ve seen reviews we people wished they purchased the 4 piston model instead of the 2 piston. I’m extremely happy with these and would highly recommend them.
Perfect Brakes
Upgraded my rear brakes from a low-tier two piston shimano hydraulic brake to this four piston model and it is night and day better at providing immense stopping power. I installed these myself, first time doing hydraulic brakes, and I did not have too much trouble getting them to where I wanted. Still on 160mm rotors for the rear, and I don't need any more power. These have that classic shimano bite, and once you learn to feather it properly it will greatly reward you, my downhill speeds have never been faster!
Nice set of brakes
I've always liked Shimano brakes. I got a new bike with Sram G2 RSC and tried to like them. These SLX have better feel, more pad clearance, and easier to bleed. Stopping power is roughly the same. The SLX 4-piston also have decent modulation, something that my older Shimano brakes did not have (XT 785 2-piston are very on/off feeling). These came with metallic pads, not resin, so thats a plus for me. Sram matchmaker mount also works on these.
When you want the best
Are these worth the extra $50 you'll pay over 2-piston brakes? Yes, they are. Nobody ever bought these 4-piston brakes and then wished they spent less for the 2-piston version. Just buy these.
