Great active-wear parka

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought two of these jackets for my 9 and 11 year old boys. The 11 year old is tall and thin, fits are typically difficult with his frame, yet this jacket fits perfectly. The powder collar really holds the jacket to his frame and prevents drafts and any loose fitting. The overall build quality and detailing of the coat is what one would find with any quality adult ski jacket. I cannot speak to the warmth of the jacket however as we have only had days down into the upper 20's (F). The reflective interior finish on the inner jacket seems like a very good idea to increase on warmth and reduce bulk. All in all a solid value.

Great Jacket for Elementary School

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Excellent jacket!! the outgrown option is key if you have a child in between sizes and growing. I ordered in line with my boys age (both) which fits slightly bigger but is perfect for layering or growth spurts. This is my third round of this jacket for both my sons, it has yet to disappoint. Each round lasted 2-3 years, it would have lasted longer but, they just flat out outgrew them. Neither of my sons have ever complained about being cold, wet or too hot. Order with confidence as your childs go to winter jacket, AND spring/fall fleece or waterproof shell (3 in 1!!! every parents dream)

Best buy

I had 2 very thin base layers and just this on and it kept me warm. Im 5'4 111lbs and bought this in XL. With waistline of 26 this was just snug would have liked it better if it was 2 inches bigger around the hips. But overall i would recommend this. Kept me warm.snowboarding

Great for school and field!

This is a multipurpose, easy to use coat/jacket. It has a warm inner layer and a waterproof shell. Of course, the people at REI were very helpful, too.

Perfect!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is our second purchase of the whirlibird 2 in 1 jacket. We loved our daughter's first jacket so much that when it was time to buy a ski jacket for our son, we didn't hesitate! It's the perfect combination of warm, dry, functional, and durable. We ski, so he needs something that can keep him warm and dry on the cold, wet days up at the mountain. But we also didn't want to have to buy a separate everyday jacket. I love that this jacket is cute enough that he doesn't mind wearing it to school everyday, and durable enough that he can wear it all season and still have it be in good shape at the end of it all. He usually wears the liner alone, unless it's raining. In which case, the shell keeps him plenty warm and dry. This jacket is perfect for my kiddos, and is well worth the cost!

Great coat and color. True to size.

I have a 10 year old. 4’10” 90ish pounds. Usually a size 12-14. He has a large jacket but wanted a new one. Thought we’d order this, as his large will likely be outgrown by the middle of winter. Unfortunately it’s a little too large for him (probably closer to a 16-18) and I’m not sure he'll grow into it for this winter. Great quality and color! Should’ve ordered a large and crossed my fingers it would fit all year. Love Columbia. Will be returning and ordering closer to when he needs it.

Excellent quality but not as warm as similar jackets.

The quality of this product is exactly what I expect from Columbia and for this price point. However, I give it a 3 star rating because based on the style, materials, construction, etc., I was expecting it to provide warmth at much lower temperatures than is the case. Both I and my 12 year old have Columbia jackets that are similar and they block the wind and trap in heat such that I'm a little chilly at 35-40 F, but not uncomfortable. For whatever reason, the Whirlibird II just isn't in that same class. My 9 year old was really looking forward to the jacket because he loves the quality and the shiny interior of our other 2 jackets. However, even at 55 F with a little wind blowing, he's uncomfortable. The insulation is noticeably less robust than the other jackets and he ends up wearing a jacket over it to stay warm.

Nice jacket, needs better zippers

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Fits good, stylish, our son likes it. The pocket zippers are the ones with the small, fine teeth and tend to snag on the pocket liners, especially the ski pass pocket on the left sleeve. That one has the nylon liner inside and it got snagged in the zipper the very first time we unzipped it right after we received the jacket. Took quite a while to get the liner free. The wider-toothed zippers or anti-snag zippers would serve much better.
