Perfect for emergencies
I bought this to pair with the GZ Nomad 5 Solar Panel. I have a few other power banks, but none this lightweight or small. I wanted something more conducive for hikes, one night campouts and emergencies. That's what this is, it's your emergency backup. As other reviewers have noted, at best, it will charge your phone once. I use it with my iPhone 11 and it will not take it from 0% to 100% (most recently I went from about 35% to 100% using about 75%), but it will buy me a day, more in an emergency. It it didn't pair so wonderfully with the Nomad 5, I don't know that I would have gotten it. The USB flap seems a bit flimsy, but I have not had any issues.
What it says it is!!
Bought this for my needs in the backcountry. It has 3300 mah battery! An iPhone 11 requires 3110 mah. So it will barely charge a phone. I’d you want to charge your phones buy something bigger. Now my example of why I bought this is for charging my I watch and an iPod shuffle! The I watch series 4 requires 291 mah so roughly I can charge my watch ten times!! The iPod shuffle is 51 mah so I can charge both of these items plenty of times in the backcountry. Figure out the mah of the device you wanna charge and pick a battery bank accordingly. I like this thing, it’s sleek, super UL, and does the job! Plus it’s cheap!!
Does not charge headlamp
Do not buy for backpacking.. Does not charge headlamps or GPS watches (Forerunner 920xt). I contacted GoalZero and they said that it won't charge these devices alone because they don't draw enough current. The solution they gave was to buy a USB splitter from Amazon or Walmart. Their (false) advertising states that you can charge a headlamp and does not list a minimum current draw. It did charge my cell phone, but only about 50%; cell battery is 4000 mAh.
good backup device
As other reviewers mention, it's not very efficient. It can only charge my OnePlus 6 about half way, despite rated battery capacity being higher. I wouldn't plan on using it for a trip where my phone wouldn't last on its own, but I do worry some misconfigured background app could drain my battery & I'd get lost. For my petzl actik headlight, it won't charge for topping off due to the auto shutoff feature, but if the headlight is much lower it does charge it effectively.
Goal Zero review
I bought this Goal Zero external battery about two months ago to charge my iPhone when I backpack. It is far lighter and smaller than others I've seen so that is a plus. And I like the four indicator lights to show the level of charge. The sales person indicated it was good for two full charges, but when I opened the box, it says it is good for one charge. I haven't tried it backpacking yet, and it might provide more than one charge. We'll see.
IT's light & it works
I have taken this on three or four back country trips. It has not let me down. It fully charges my iphone 7s once, as advertised. This replaced a unit I got on amazon that failed in the backcountry on it's maiden voyage (or was it the second voyage). Anyway there are some no too good ones out there.
doesn't charge watch
Is this not compatible with a Garmin Fenix 5S?When I plug in, it charges for about 15 seconds and then stops. There is no issue with charging my LG G7 ThinQ phone, so I can't figure out the issue with my watch... Help!
Indispensable
This is great for traveling, since you should not use public USB ports and get hacked. I also take it backpacking for charging phone and purifier. It is easily charge by the solar panel
Defective unit - connects/disconnects continuously
unreliable product - would not stay connnected /charging. Tested on multiple devices, multiple cables - problem isolated to the GoalZero Flip 12.
Gets It Done
Can charge an iPhone to maximum on a single charge. It’s simple and compact, though you might want a more powerful brick if you’re spending several days in the backcountry.
