Expired?
Ordered online. Delivered with the last digits of expiration date on both canisters rubbed off. I have no idea if it’s already expired or when it expires. Tried emailing the company direct to see if they could ID Exp Date by batch number. Been 3 days and they have not responded. Highly recommend only purchasing in person where you can verify the Exp Date yourself. REI does not have your back on this one. Unfortunately, I now have to drive 1.5 hrs to the nearest REI to return the spray and hopefully find some with readable Exp Dates. Super lame.
Yellow bear canister
I have a backpacker cache from a few yrs ago. This one from counter assualt feels cheaper in plastic, albeit lighter. It has 3 screws instead of 2. It has a slightly raised spot that says " push" but it does nothing. You do have to twist to seat it unlike the older one u push a button and the lid lifts. Also top is rounded so you can still sit on it but can't use as a table as slick plastic will leave ur food and drinks on ground
Love the holster for this bear spray
We bought this dual set for a recent trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park since we were hiking in grizzly country. I love that these come with holsters so that they were easy to access from our chest straps on our camera backpacks. The safety release and holster are both easy to operate. I appreciated the cost savings from buying a dual pack. I watched Bear Safety videos from the rangers at Yellowstone National Park so that I was fully educated about how to use the bear spray in the event of any bear encounters (which we didn't have)
Tested well
Fortunately I’ve never actually had to use this spray in the wild but I recently tested one of the canisters to see how strong the spray is. It worked well but the stream from the nozzle was not quite as strong as I expected. Some of the mist lingered in the air for a bit and was carried by the wind after spraying. Key lesson learned - ask the bear to move downwind before spraying it in the face. Even after testing it there is a lot of the material still in the canister for future use.
Awesome deterrent!!
Love this product! Gives my wife and me a definite sense of security while backpacking. I bet the person who had the cougar stalking him wishes he had some Counter Assault with him. I’ve seen videos where a quick shot of this spray has turned a grizzly around instantly in Yellowstone!
Spray for mean forest puppies
It's bear spray. Hopefully I'll never need it but if i do i hope it works. If it doesn't i won't be able to update the review to a negative one
Hope to never have to use
I bought and carried for multiple hiking trips/camping. While I haven't had to use I have carried on belt so its was easy to access but also wanted in my way. I reviewed the safety instructions and removed and replaced the safety clip a couple of times to insure I knew how to arm the bear spray. I am ready to use but also hope I never have to use.
hope we never have to use it
every four years, we discharge our old CABD spray just to check performance. it still sprays...each time so far. it is also good to get a trainer spray for familiarization of the controls and spray power/pattern.
A little comfort in mind for future trips
The only product that I absolutely never hope I have to use! I bought this for my son and I for our camping/drift boat trips in Idaho/Montana. We have watched the videos on how to use this should an encounter occur with an aggressive grizzly bear or other animal. Again I hope we never have to use it and I will be happy if they are never used by the expiration date. I got this two pack because of the price and that they come with the holsters. We will be prepared this summer and for future trips. The holsters seem good, hole the canisters well, and I won’t have to worry about losing them. I will definitely be buy another set again for my wife and youngest child so the whole family will be prepared. Better to be prepared that not having them in my opinion. The videos for this spray and itself were created in Montana and in-cooperation with the University of Montana. That right there is good enough for me knowing it was made in Bear country with the aid of the state university to insure its effectiveness.
It’s bear spray
I thankfully haven’t had to use it yet, so I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the spray, but the holster works well enough. I personally don’t thing the elastic part is very intuitive—no matter how I position it, one of the elastic pieces is always loose—but it’s perfect for sliding onto the chest strap of my pack. As others have said, it’s super expensive—I bought mine during the anniversary sale because I absolutely did not want to pay full price.
