Warm and Comfortable

I'm leaving an honest review after looking at men's and women's jackets for 2 months before purchasing 3 brands for different people. this is the latest purchase. My wife honestly loved it. She would fit a Large, but got an Xlarge to accommodate extra layers. she said it's very warm and could not tolerate more than 10 min in Ikea before overheating. She likes the shape of the hood, which allows for a pony tail, the fact that it's water proof, the comfort, and the length in which it covers her down to half her thigh, as she is curvy. I would definitely try it on before purchase and sit down to ensure it bends at the waist. She wore her 3 in 1 Parka with just a short in 28 degrees F, and she's very warm and comfortable. Due to the good down fill, she believes it will be comfortable enough down to between 0 to 10 degrees F with an extra layer. Sort of a con is that it does not come with stretch cuffs to block wind at the wrists, but she likes the length of the cuffs, since she can tuck her hands into the sleeves and not need gloves anyway (the size is a little larger for her). She doesn't like those types of cuffs anyway and prefers the open cuff like most retail jackets. Consider this: wide trunk cuts and normal diameter sleeves are for layering with vests and shirts, otherwise you'd get a larger size overall that would not accommodate you. It may not be as asthetically pleasing as a typical sleeve and trunk cut, but it accommodates for weather. Patagonia and Arc'teryx are both high quality and performance. Arc'teryx slightly more so in technical details, but with a huge price jump. Patagonia is stylish, warm, high quality, well designed, ethical, and great as well, just a somewhat different company focus. Sizing it is normal. She chose a larger size to accommodate her 'thicc'. I would recommend to 'thicc' girls 100%. It's not hyper stylish with the outer layer only, but in my guy opinion, that's fine, since it provides strong weather and warmth performance and has a wider trunk diameter cut. It still gives some shape. With only the inner layer, it's great, looks like a Puff jacket. When zipped up, the mouth is covered for extra warm. It looks great zipped, partly open, and full open. Her absolute favorite part is that the pockets are deep and can accommodate a 6/8 in purse without falling out. Note, this is a Xlarge Jacket, so the pockets may be smaller in smaller size.

great top layer, down fill almost non-existent

I thought this would be the perfect coat because of its length, waterproof and windproof layer, and a 700 fill insulated layer. I was shocked to find that I could practically count the few down/feathers in each square. it does not have any loft. I own multiple down vests and coats with fill levels of 500 and one coat with a fill level of 850. This coat does not come anywhere close to the loft of even my 500's. I thought about keeping it for the the top layer and putting it over one of my current down coats but it won't fit over them because they actually have down in them! This coat is horribly disappointing, especially for a brand like Patagonia. I have shown this coat to lots of friends and they all agree that there is very little down in it.

Great for cool wet days, not for freezing temps

This jacket is just what I needed for most of Seattle's winter days, which are cold and rainy but not often freezing. As other reviews have mentioned, it doesn't seem as thick or warm as I assumed it would be given the alleged rating of "warmest" in the tech specs, so I plan to wear a second down layer underneath it when the weather is below freezing - this coat is not the best choice for super cold weather. So far I've tried this coat together as well as just the down layer by itself, and I like it both ways. It is definitely a slim fitting coat and my usual size barely fits over my hips, so definitely pay close attention to the size chart.

Fews pros but more cons for me

Fit was perfect (true to size from Patagonia, I'm 5'4" 135 pounds my usual medium fit well). Pros: fit well, loved waterproof outer and look of the coat. Cons: was not warm enough, realized I'll never use outer and inner coats separately so the abundance of zippers to secure the inner to the outer coat was then just annoying and rigid around the neck when coat was fully zipped. The inner layer left wrist cuff never laid flat, like the right did, and it was uncomfortable and annoying. Too expensive of a coat not to love completely so ended up returning. Nothing other than excellent service from REI.

Great versatile winter coat!

I’ve been eyeing this coat for a while but was on the fence about spending the $ so when my husband asked what I wanted for Christmas this was my pick! I LOVE it! It’s warm and a great cut with some stretch in the fabric (I’m tall with broad shoulders so often coats are tight and restrictive but not this one). It is perfect for running errands or walking my dog on cold midwestern winter days. It is made with high quality materials and zippers with great deep pockets and a hidden inside pocket. When it is above 40 degrees the inner coat is just right. The outer shell has a great hood for when the sky is windy and spitting ice. It was worth the investment!

Cozy

I feel nice and snug and cozy in this coat. The layers are easy to separate and then put back together. The sleeves are long and nice for my long arms. The rain shell seems substantial enough to layer over a sweater on a chilly day without needing to add in the down layer. The down shell is nice for running errands when I'm in and out of the car and don't want to struggle with a big, bulky coat. Agreed with other reviewers that this coat runs very small. I have a 39" bust and needed an XL. This jacket could really use a waist drawstring to help with the fit; the size that is wide enough for my bust and shoulders is just loose enough at the waist to let in cold air.

Warm and stylish

I have only had the chance to wear this coat one time in cold snowy weather this season but so far it met my expectations for warmth. I am cold natured and even with a down jacket with a layer underneath, I usually end up freezing and uncomfortable if I have to walk any distance in frigid weather. I wore this jacket during the last cold snow snap and was able to navigate comfortably without the need to dart inside. It is also cut and tailored nicely. I choked at the $600.00 price but had been eyeing it for over a year and could not find another one that seemed as nice as this one. So I took a chance and have not been disappointed. I would suggest going one size up. I usually wear a small and the fit was really flattering but it was just a tad too small. With the way it is tailored, even one size up still provides a flattering fit.

lasts years and years

I’ve had this coat in the black color for many chicago falls and winters , and it has always withstood the ever changing climate , and washed like new each and every time , which must have been over 40 times( not lying). It’s warm, can be dressed down for shoveling or walking through snowy days , and looks just as good for wearing out on the town. Be sure to wash only with REI waterproofing detergent. It is expensive but was well worth it , 10 years later I’m still wearing it.

ALMOST - but this is SLIM fit!

I really wanted to keep this coat. Waterproof, down & worthy of the streets or the woods. BUT, the fit is SLIM! It actually says Slim on the tag when I got it. I am a true Medium, 8-10, I ordered the Medium and it is way too tight to zip past my hips. I can get it, but it's not comfortable. It fits perfectly everywhere else EXCPET the hips. I am not able to layer at all or wear any winter items underneath. I tried it on with a sweater and couldn't get it to zip over it. The outer shell fits just perfectly with the sweater, but not with the inner puffer coat (which is the most used layer!). I have to return and am sad to do so. The sleeves seemed oddly wide too, like other reviewers there are no cuffs which would've been a good addition here. Please make this in Regular fit?!

Small improvements to this design would be helped

I’m a big fan of Patagonia but this fell below the bar for me. The clasp to maintain the sleeves of jacket ONE inside jacket TWO are flimsy and pop off easily. Meaning when you take this jacket off, even with the clasp secure, the sleeve pulls through almost every time. Also, when putting your arms into the sleeves, the plush is so loose it covers the ends of the sleeves. As for warmth, yea. This parka is most definitely as warm as it gets. But ease of use is a 4/5 star.

5-Star Coat with 2-Star Pockets

Love the design of this multi-use coat, which I use for travel to and from work, sometimes to the very cold Midwest in winter. Dressy enough to look professional in a dress, skirt, slacks and blazer. Slim fit is shaped and mostly flattering. Medium fits me well in length, hits mid-thigh. Sleeves are just a touch long reaching my knuckles. I am 5'4". My major complaint is the pocket design which is very disappointing, especially considering the high price and expectation of Patagonia quality. The pockets lack waterproof zippers and the coat fabric fails to cover them. This creates an odd look to the coat where the pockets sit, and does not keep them waterproof. Major fail on the pockets, but otherwise I really like the coat and am keeping it for the versatility it provides me as rain plus winter coat.
