It's a water container that holds water. Yay! We've past the first test. Seriously though. These are nice. The price is a bit steep. Scepter and REI are overreaching just a bit but the product is quality. I've been using the standard 5 gallon water jugs. Aside from being a pain to pack, carry and pour, they also have a bad habit of cracking right at the bottom corner when you set them down wrong. At ~$15 a bottle, it's eventually not worth the trouble. You're not saving anything. I've also mucked about with the various camp varieties (Coghlans, Reliance, Rhino-Pak, ect...). These all have their short comings too. I won't bother to enumerate. If you've used them, you'll understand. More recently, I've been using the white 1 gallon screw tops. The type of thing you see cleaners storing bleach in. They work surprisingly well for $1.50 a piece. Anyway, I was looking for a more permanent solution. Enter Scepter. This product is probably overbuilt for most needs. I'm not driving over the thing with a humvee. The only way I can see breaking one is filling the jug half way and dropping it off a belay point 50 ft up. I've seen nalgenes pop like water balloons. But I don't plan on doing that anytime soon. Not intentionally. The word "manslaughter" has a ominous ring to it. So why Scepter then? I went with the 10 L simply because manhandling a 20 L is a pain even on good days. I'll take two ~20 lb loads over one ~40 lb load walking up the trail to a campsite any day. They are also easier to shove in odd spaces throughout the boat, car, RV, whatever. They do stack. However, like endurance, that's not really a top selling point. Let's just say I wouldn't trust a loaded column around pets or small children. The really nice thing about Scepter is they have an opening you can fit your hand into and the pour/venting system is both leak proof and sturdy. As an added bonus, the 10L fits in both my sink and my drying rack. Easy to fill, easy to clean. If you get the hose adapter, you can flip the small ones up and dispense really easy too. While not insulated, using ice or powdered drinks is no problem either. See the point about wide mouth and easy cleaning. There's potential for soccer games, tailgating, BBQ's, what-have-you. They'd also make a really good grey water tank but I'd probably use the 20 L for that. So yeah, solid buy if you can past the initial sticker shock. You can find them online in the ~$35 range. However, reputable vendors usually just pass along the shipping cost. If you're not using a reputable vendor, you stand a good chance of getting a knock-off even if the vendor meant well. (Cough, cough, Amazon, cough). I was actually surprised to find REI selling them. You couldn't find Scepter in the US for awhile. As you may or may not know, Scepter is actually a Canadian company. They manufacture for the Canadian military. Jerry cans in particular. Word on the street was California or some place changed their laws concerning fuel vs water containers. Apparently regulators were concerned people might use the cheaper water containers to store fuel. Note: It's generally not a good idea to store fuel in a container labeled "Water." You'd think this was self-evident but someone obviously found out the hard way. Anyway, confusion ensued and you couldn't find Scepter in the US for awhile. Let's hope they stay around this time.

leaking water from lid
Leon
I was so excited to get this new water container before I found out it was leaking water from the lid. As soon as I received this container, I tried to wash the inside of the container, I noticed that it was leaking water. No matter how much harder it is to close the lid it still leaks. This is not a cheap product and I agreed this is a good high quality product. But I was surprised at how it passed the QC inspection. Do they have a leak test or air pressure test before releasing each product? I read a lot of good reviews before I purchased this. Probably I am the one unlucky person to get an issue on it?

Rugged and heavy duty

While I ordered the containers from another source I wanted to pass along one caveat after listing the pluses. These cans are very heavy duty and all 4 of the ones (10L) I bought are leak free. The cap spout and breather port are good features but can be difficult to turn with your fingers. The cap also might be a challenge for smaller hands but there is a spanner wrench available. I do recommend them but on one container I am not able to turn the cap to the optimal 6:00 PM drain position, its more like 4:00. My supplier considers this within normal tolerances and not a defect.

Best there is.

Years ago I was able to buy 5 five gal. Specter cans for a flat $100 and free shipping. Mine had “Property US Government” embossed on the side. Guess they had warehouses full of them when the desert wars ended. Many years later I still use them but wanted something smaller, enough water to keep me going during an unexpected overnight stay in the desert. The 2.5 gallon size is perfect and it’s just as tough as my big five gal. military surplus containers. REI shipped promptly. It had a odor inside but a overnight baking soda soak and a triple rinse fixed that. I learned years ago to long term store these with the cap off. Just check em for spiders, rinse and fill.

Robust but increasingly outdated and annoying

Used this can quite a bit, and it’s pretty hard to close well enough such that it doesn’t leak. Yes, you can put lubricant on it, but my LCI can doesn’t leak. Pouring water the cap always slides down into the water and makes a mess, pretty annoying. Tried the spigot, which annoyingly doesn’t work on LCI’s, and you can’t leave it attached and getting it to orient correctly down isn’t something it wants to do naturally. The only reason you’d get this can is if you need something that can fall out of the back of your truck and down a mountain and not break. Otherwise it’s not been revised in many decades, and there’s better options out there now.

Leaks from Lid

One would assume that given the price, the design, the gaskets, the robustness, etc. These things would not leak. Yet they do. And if you don't read this you may find out the hard way like I did, by assuming that it won't leak because you tested it for a minute or ten seconds. I have a 5 gallon and a 2.5 gallon, and they leak if they are packed on their side - or if they tip over while in your vehicle. Very frustrating. Other than that, they seem to be the best thing going. I just wish they did not leak. I've considered returning my leakers to REI to see what happens....

nice container that will likely last forever

I bought one of these for short car camping trips, and the 10 liter one is enough for me for a couple of days unless the weather is scorching and I'm drinking tons of water. I'm glad I went with the smaller size as it's pretty unwieldy even though I'm fairly strong. This thing is insanely well-built, to the point where I could probably keep it in my car in the winter and let it freeze, and it wouldn't burst. (Though am not going to intentionally test that out as it's so expensive and I don't want to take a chance.) It did smell horrible when I got it, but was able to let it soak for about a week with a couple of changes of water, and then for another couple of days with water + baking soda, and it's manageable now. Will continue to soak it when it's not in use and hopefully eventually the smell/taste will completely go away. The only issue is that the pour spout cap spins and flops downward when it's open, right into the stream of pouring water. That was hugely annoying - even trying to water my garden with the initial soaking water was a giant pain, and pouring to a precise location was impossible. So I attached some 3M velcro (the plastic kind you use with Command strips) with some heavy duty permanent double-sided tape to both the spout lid and the large lid (make sure to line them up before sticking them on), and that works wonderfully to keep the spout clear for pouring. Not sure how durable it will be in the long run but it will be easy to redo if needed.

It leaks

Solid construction, but it leaks when put on its side, no matter how tight you screw the cap. I have a feeling that I'm not the first to have this issue as the unit I received had been clearly used before and returned. I returned it as well. Hope that third time is the charm for the next person

Heavy duty but will leak without a wrench.

These are awesome. I bought 4 and filled them with baking soda and warm water for a couple days to remove any chemical flavors, which worked great. Sitting normally (as pictured online), it will not leak, even in a bouncy car on a long road trip; however, if you prop it on it’s side to use with the Sceptor water dispenser, it may slowly leak if it’s not over-the-top tight. It’s so slow, however, that I’ve caught it every time and avoided significant water, but it is a nuisance. I bought a Sceptor water jug wrench on Amazon (lots of them on there for cheap) to remedy this for the future. I don’t regret this purchase despite the leaking issue, especially now that I have a resolution. It has a nice small footprint and is easy to tote and refill as needed. It’s also indestructible.

Expensive, but worth every penny

Incredibly durable and does NOT leak. The 2.5 gal size is so much easier to carry than the tall 5 gal - not an insignificant detail to keep in mind. Love the wide mouth opening which makes cleaning much easier; you can actually get your hand inside to scrub it out. Upon delivery, wash (with warm water and a drop of dish soap), rinse and repeat. Fill with clean cold water and let it sit for several days, then dump it out and refill. After doing this, my very sensitive nose picked up zero odors, and my tastebuds detected no strange after taste. Currently using as emergency water storage, but will also work great for road trips and camping. My only complaints is the color: it's is pink, not sand. I'd much prefer it in green or blue. Expensive: yes, but it will last a lifetime.
