Leaks like a sieve
The gasket is terribly designed and the bag started leaking after 5-10 uses. When you squeeze the bag, unfiltered water leaks out though the seal and mixes with the filtered water if you don't deliberately guide the flow. Do you want to spend $30 to impress your friends with a gimmicky filter next hiking trip? If so, then this is the product for you. If you want to something that will last hundreds of miles on the trail then DO NOT BUY this. One redeeming factor: I didn't get sick from the wilderness water. Unclear if that means it worked or the water was clean to begin with.
The best Sawyer filter so far.
I'm extremely pleased with the Micro. I've owned 2 Micros, 4 mini's, and 2 Squeezes. The mini's are practically useless as far as I'm concerned. The Squeeze is great... but the Micro is totally just as good as the Squeeze... but smaller. Oh, and it has a little more flexibility because it has the intake nipple so you could theoretically use it as an in-line filter. Moreover, this comes with a blue adapter so you can connect it using a gravity system. The reason I'm leaving a review now is because I've always used it on clear Sierra water... but I recently returned from a 3 week trip in Utah. I was forced to filter from muddy puddles in the desert and the green river. We're talking muddy as heck water - disgusting. I thought I would ruin the filter. To my amazement, the filter flowed smoothly. I was using a new filter, and I was worried that it was broken because the water flowed so well! The only reason I knew it was working is because mud went in, and clear water came out. I made sure to back-flush the filter after each one of these mud sessions, and eventually it slowed down. After several days of this, I had to flush the filter after each liter. In other words, I'd filter a liter, then back-flush with two syringes, and then do another liter... and back-flush twice. That may seem annoying, but the filter worked the entire trip. Near the end of the trip, the syringe broke! That was OK for me because I have so many syringes from my other Sawyer products. When I got home, I used hot (120F water) to back-flush. This is key. I've had so many Sawyers that I've learned that the warm water helps them regain their flow rate. One thing I want to add is that on all 8 of the Sawyers that I have owned, I've never been able to restore the original flow rate. When these are new, they are amazingly fast. I wish I knew a technique to restore the original flow rate. Therefore, I think that the expected lifespan is a little "generous" on their part. Luckily, they are priced so that I can just buy a new one each year.
Understand The Product
Going on 2 years of trouble-free filtering. Knowing your equipment will ensure you get the maximum benefit from this filter. First, back flushing is essential. Flush with spring or plain, not tap water after every outing. It’s also possible to back flush in the field with nothing more than a flip top from a Smartwater bottle. Always a good idea to check your filter before leaving the house also. Second, do not rely on the Sawyer bags for filtering (squeezing). They will fail at the most inopportune moment. Smartwater bottles or other popular water bags that REI doesn’t carry (rhymes with ree-book) are a better choice and thread onto the filter.
Not a great update
I was so hoping that the micro squeeze would be a worthy update. Smaller than the original, new bags, what's not to like? Well, sadly the new bags are even worse than the originals if that's possible. They may be lighter but they can't take the pressure. I think that my bag lasted about a week and yes, I do know about backwashing more frequently. Perhaps it was that the micro squeeze, although it may start as almost equal or even equal in flow to the original, didn't take long for the flow to slow. I didn't have my original with me but I feel as though the new micro slowed down way more quickly than the original. Sawyer is still my filter as it has been for most of us out there for years but the update is disappointing.
Great for traveling
I bought this filter for refilling while traveling in the different countries. I usually fill out of tap water and had no issues with drinking it. It’s great to eliminate plastic bottle waste and save money while traveling. I like the new inclusion of the coupler so I can just use the bag or another bottle to backwash and not have to bring the bulky syringe. The new bag is lighter and less rigid and I didn’t have any issue using it for the last 3 weeks. As an improvement, I used a sport flip top cap instead of the included pullout cap for easeness of use. This is one improvement that could be made. Definitely recommend!
good filter but would go with original sawyer
Bought this as an upgrade to my kit after using an MSR hand pump. Significant improvement from that filter. I didn’t experience any of the leaking or slow filter issues that others write about. I was sad that this system doesn’t work inline with my platypus bladder out of the box and needs adapters. I had issues with getting the bag to fill without a separate cup to pour into it. My specific water sources were slow running springs. For a bit more money I could have gotten the sawyer original, I would go with that option if I could go back. The weight saving and function doesn’t really explain buying this. I used it on the AT in Shenandoah NP.
Backflushing Necessary after just 3 Liters
I bought this and the mini at the same time for a 7-day backpacking trip. We were filtering water with very little sediment. We read all the online reviews and everything seemed equal, but the two products are not. After the 3rd fill-up of a 1 liter Smart Bottle with this micro filter it was practically useless with almost no flow. Compare to the mini which we bought at the same time and filtered the identical water and it still had a strong flow. Unfortunately we didn't bring the backflushing part (why would you for such a short trip with clean water) and it was dead weight.
Get the full size Sawyer
This filter is hands down the worst piece of backpacking gear i have ever used. Flow was excellent day one but RAPIDLY diminishes from then. I was honestly worried on thru hike that i would not be able to get water. I called sawyer to swap for full size but they said i could not switch once it was used. Thank you REI for accepting this return. This product is absolute junk. Yes, I obviously back flushed several times.
Fatal flaw
The compact and ultra-light features of the Sawyer water filter are completed negated by their pitifully slow filtration rate and clogging. The Sawyer products have a horribly slow filtration rate (even when brand-new), and they don't have any pre-filters. Thus, the Sawyer filters clog up immediately. Your can back-flush the filter to clear it. But it's extremely aggravating because it takes SO-O-O-O-O long to filter just a tiny amount of water that you then have to waste back-flushing. I threw my Sawyer into the garbage with much joy and celebration.
Garbage!!!!
Garbage! I removed from packaging screwed on a bottle to do the first run of water and it fell apart. Sawyer customer service is a joke and REI wants $9 to return it (bought online no store nearby) So I'm out $30 because of this filter.
