Not as advertised
Not the dimensions it advertised. Bought this pillow for the height being at 5.5, because my Nemo filo doesn’t have the height I need for sleep. Unfortunately the dimensions on this pillow height is at 4 inches.
it worked well it lasted
We bought 2 of these from REI back in 2016 and using it sparingly after initial 2 months trip to New Zealand and other parts of Asia that year. It is very compact and lightweight which is big plus for long trip. Not the most comfortable but we mixed between backpacking/camping and hostels while in New Zealand so we weren't sleep with it for more than few days at a time. Then this past June we went for 1 night backpacking trip and when I tried to inflate it, I heard a pop and apparently the divider seams got detached and now it becomes a balloon as others have described. So it is useless. I tried to contact the company about warranty/repair option via their phone/email and I got no response what so ever - over 1.5 months. I don't mind if they told me if it is not covered under its lifetime warranty, but at least return the message/email.
Loved it but wouldn’t buy another!
I REALLY loved this pillow but I would not buy another one. The first one developed a leak on my first trip with it. REI swapped it out with a new one. The second one has lasted maybe a half dozen trips and now it leaks too. It was always stored in it’s stuff sack and then packed inside a cup. It was only inflated/deflated inside the tent. I submerged this last one in a tub of water and found it was leaking from two small holes on the top side of the pillow. It couldn’t be my spiky hair cuz I am bald! So sad to give this a bad review cuz when it held air it was the bomb.
It's About A Lot More than Sleeping
Forget about backpacking and camping - I never do either. I use this pillow 1) as lumbar support in cars, trains, planes, etc. You can inflate it to just the right size for comfort. 2) As a book or device rest on my lap or plane table while I'm reading 3) As a headrest while reading in bed 4) As a back rest while meditating in a chair (I'm lazy: it supports me when my back muscles get sore from sitting up straight. It might also work for the Seiza position.) The one-way valve allows you to inflate it until it's just right for lumbar support, which might only be a breath or two, while the main valve allows for quick deflation. It fits into a tiny stash bag, the size of one of those small nylon tote bags, which is what I'm looking for when I'm on public transit or traveling the world (lots of backpacking-sized gear also works for traveling light.) I have attached the bag to the valve assembly with a tiny s-biner so that I won't lose the bag.
lightweight and super functional!
I bought this pillow in anticipation of the Inca Trail and then future regular use. I knew I would be renting a sleeping bag and sleeping mat from the trekking company but I also knew I would need a pillow to get a proper sleep! I found this super lightweight and really functional pillow and I loved it for my trek. It was just the right size, I was pretty focused on the weight of my bag for the 4 day journey, and it fit perfectly into the provided sleeping bag. I played around with amounts of air, it's super easy to do when the valve system is so helpful! Really glad I found this and excited for future backpacking use!
Full of holes
I used this for about 20 nights of camping before it started leaking, needing about three inflates a night, which kinda degrades one's sleep to have to wake up for that. Like another reviewer here, I put it into a tub of water -- thinking I would find a single hole I could plug -- and found that it had about five pinhole leaks in various places on the soft "head" side of the pillow, indicating a more systemic problem with the materials. Returned to REI (full refund, thanks REI) and I will be using that money to buy a pillow made by someone else.
Best backpacking pillow!
I'm mostly a side sleeper, and sometimes sleep on my side. I cannot sleep without a pillow, and have tried every pillow since they started making them, starting with the cute little (useless) Thermarest pillows. This one is thick and durable. I've used it for about 20 backpacking nights, and several nights car camping. It folds up to about the size of an egg. The sleeping side is sort of flocked which makes it comfy, but I still wrap the next days shirt around it cause it's weird for me to think of putting my bare face on it.
tiny, comfy, versatile
I traveled with this pillow for about 3 years and it was a lifesaver both on transportation and while backpacking/hiking. It's true that if you inflate it all the way it's too hard, so don't do that. I like to fill it ~half way with one big breath which makes it comfy on both stomach & back and for side sleeping I fold it in half and boom double thickness (also a good trick for the window seat). The other potential issue is your head rolling around because it's just a bag of air after all. Well that is true and at first I hated it but my body got used to it pretty quickly and now no issues, very comfy. After 3 years of heavy use it has finally gotten some leaks at the seam. I'm writing this review now because I'm back to buy another.
A pillow that lasts
I used this pillow on my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Loved the comfort of it, the ease of blowing it up and packing it down, and the fact that it packs down so tiny. Within my last couple weeks on the trail, the pillow was regularly deflating, and as I woke up there would be very minimal air left in it, but enough that I slept through the night anyway. Considering that i used it every single night for 6 months, thats pretty good! I'm about to buy another for my future trips :)
2 Issues
The pillow itself I would give 3 stars, and that is only because the valve insert that holds air while blowing fell off. The pillow still works just have to be quick with closing it and it no longer can be adjusted after blowing it up, which is completely fine for me in the short term. The 1 star comes from Sea to Summit's warranty lack of communication, they claim a lifetime guarantee and that might be true however they just do not reply to warranty issues, the turn-around time for a reply was 48-72 hours and I am well over that, even a response that doesn't replace or fix the issue would be better than not receiving any communication.
