Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.

TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

great shorts for thick thighs!!

I never write reviews, so that’s how much I like these. I have lots of problems with finding shorts because I’m short (5’3”) with thick upper thighs (no thigh gap). Usually with shorts they’ll ride up or get gummed up in my crotch, but these ones stay PUT! They’re a serious high rise on my frame, but I find I don’t notice it in a bad way (maybe I’ll even try tucking a shirt in??). Size 4 fit on the nose so I’m a little worried about shrinkage but the 6 looked too big/frumpy, so hopefully not drying them will work. Might even go back for a pair in navy (I got canyon)!

Strange fit and not stretchy...details in review

I really wanted to love these shorts, or even like them, because they are sturdy and have SIX POCKETS! Alas, the fit on these is very weird on my body. I'm not sure who all these "curvy" reviewers are because these shorts seem designed for people with rectangular bodies. I'm 5'7" and around a 42" hip and 33" waist and bought the 10 and 12 for comparison. 12 tends to be spot on for me in most other brands but I also snugly fit an 8 in the REI Taereen pants (the ultimate pants). The high rise hits right at my belly button. The 12 was a little baggy especially around the butt, about half inch too loose in the waist, and the excess bagginess around the legs meant that it felt "in the way" when walking between my thighs. The 10 looks much better, but was a tight fit to get over my hips, there's not enough give at the hems so it digs in if I move my legs too far in any direction, and is tight on my belly due to the high rise. I can feel it dig in when sitting down, and forget about squatting or scrambling. The 10 would be acceptable if they had more give. But these are by no means stretchy contrary to the product description. Like, pulling on the fabric with my fingers yields nothing. They may have some stretch in a technical sense but they are less stretchy than your average pair of high cotton content jeans. It's a shame because I prefer the way the 10 looks, but for these to be remotely realistic for biking and hiking, I'll either need to go with the 12 or a pair of Prana shorts which I don't really like the look of. (Side note, I hate when people post their body weight and height as if that provides any useful information! Shows how conditioned we all are to associate weight with build!)

LOVE these shorts

I'm so happy with my first pair that I just bought another. A size 6 fits me perfectly. I am about 130 pounds now and probably between a 6-8, so they do fit a little bit large (but fitting into a size 6 makes me very happy :). They are super comfortable for hiking, even in our high heat and humidity. They are sturdy and feel like they'll never wear out.

Quality shorts

1. Thick material, it holds its shape after washing and feels like they will last 20yrs. 2. Tummy control, im 42 and I have a little tummy these dont show a bulge. 3. Inseam, long enough to prevent chaffing, short enough to look attractive and stylish. 4. Booty, I have a larger, curvier booty, and these fit great. 5. Size 10, these are true to size. I am 5'4, 150lbs, Bust 38, waist 35, hips 45. I ordered size 12 originally b/c "athletic" clothes tend to be more narrow, but these fit really well.

Great shorts for curvaceous body types

I'm an hourglass/pear-shaped gal, and I have a terrible time finding shorts that work for me. But these are great! They're comfy with a substantial (but not excessive) rise. And the length is just perfect - it's not frumpy, but it is long enough to stay put. I have a 36" waist and 46" hips, and I ordered the size 16. I find these to be pretty true to the size chart. My pair is a little roomy for movement and comfort, but not baggy at all. I hope REI keeps making these, because I may have another pair in my future.

The 1970's style shorts I've always wanted!

The photos on the models here do not do these amazing shorts justice! They are just the right length (they make athletic thighs look great), fabric (thick and durable with just enough stretch to be comfy) and style (high-waisted, cut to flatter a hiking butt and small waist). I bought these on a snowy day in winter because they were such a perfect fit. I hope REI makes this style forever! I am 5'9 130lbs, they fit true to my usual size 4.

They stretch out....a lot

I tried these on in the store and decided that a 2 would fit me best (snug, even). I usually wear a 4 in pants but the 4 was too baggy. After wearing them for a couple days they really stretched out to the point where I could barely keep them on my hips. I washed them in hot water in an attempt to shrink them but they just stretched out again the next time I wore them. I ended up returning them two months later because they were so big. For reference I’m 5’7” and 130 lbs and the 2 was too big.

nice shorts, but get your normal size!

I'm normally a 4 but I ordered the 2 based on all the reviews that said they run large. They technically fit, but they're a little tight for my liking. I wish I had ordered my normal size. The shorts are a thick and stiff material, which is nice, but they don't really stretch at all. Since they're for outdoor activities, I'd say you're better off getting your normal size and having them be possibly slightly too big than dealing with them being a little small. In my opinion they run true to size, not large. I was going to exchange for a 4 but they're out of stock. For reference, I'm 5'2", 125 lbs, waist 28", hips 31", they dig a little into my crotch and are just overall a bit snug. If you're on the fence, don't size down.

Look great!

My waist size is 26.5” and the size 2 fit perfectly, even with my larger hips (38”). Hard to find shorts that accommodate my waist to hip ratio without the waist gapping, but these look and feel good.

Love them-size down!

These shorts are great! Very cute and comfortable. I do feel that they run a size large. I’m a solid size 10 after kids—5’7” and 145-150lb with a muscular, straight-up-and-down build—and these fit big throughout. I just ordered the size 8 and hope they’re small enough. I love the thicker fabric, slight stretch, multitude of pockets, and high waist that doesn’t show butt crack when squatting—even in a size too large! I think they’ll be great for hiking and casual use. Hope they bring back more colors and restock the sold out sizes–I would get a pair in every color!

Great Shorts!

Love these shorts! They are the perfect length, which is something I always struggle with finding. I’m 5’6” and don’t have super long legs. Shorts that hit right above the knee look silly on me and other shorts are usually too short for dressing modestly. These are perfect. I am usually a 12/14. I ordered a 14 and a 16 since they’re a stiff fabric with no stretch. The 14 fit, but was pretty tight around the waist and bum. The 16 shrunk a little bit in the dryer and then fit perfect everywhere. Love the color and pockets too!
