Fancy cooking
I used this is my backyard to cook some sausage and steak. It took a bit to heat up as the cook plate is cast iron. It does use up your fuel fast if on high to create that good sear on meat. It could use a cover to trap in heat to cook faster. It is easy to setup and just as easy to clean. Flaws are long heat time and the instructions do. It come with English instructions. But overall a good piece to add to your car camping adventures.
Great compact grill!
The SnowPeak Grill Burner is a great grill for small spaces or for packing light. The heavy sloped cast iron surface is surprisingly hefty and came well seasoned. The grill takes isobutane camp fuel and the cooling element is u-shaped, which creates a naturally hot-spot at one end of the grill, making heat management predicable. The camp fuel regulator has a convenient built in igniter that worked first try. Overall, I’d say this is a great grill for cooking up to 4 burgers at a time, or perhaps grilling skewers. My only complaint is that the instruction manual was not in English, so I would only recommend this to those with experience with both grilling and ca mp stoves.
great portable cast iron grill top for camping
great portable grill for a more Asian style searing of thinner meats and veggies. I read some complaints about this grill and the most common one was that people did not think it got hot enough. i have not had this problem. the grill plate is cast iron so it does take some time to heat up just like a beefy cast iron skillet does on a stove or fire. the burner will not cook as hot as an open flame grill will so you will want to think of it more like a cast iron skillet. you will usually cook thinner meats on a skillet than you would on a grill that has a lid. other than that bit of info that needs to be known before purchasing... its been great!
Sturdy, compact, and easy to use
This grill burner has been a lot of fun for my family as we spend time outside! Pros: - Sturdy. This grill burner is well made using high quality materials. The legs keep it level, the cast iron top stays firmly in place, the heating element works really well, it connects securely to the fuel, and the starter button works instantly. - Compact. The grill is small, but for me, that’s ideal for outdoor and camping use. Not a lot to clean, doesn’t take up much space in the car, and a great size for small outdoor meals. - Easy to use. Just connect to your fuel and press the starter button. Cons: - Uneven heating. The heating element is U-shaped which results in cooler spots in the cast iron. Be sure to move your food around while grilling. - No cover. On a windy day, grilling took a long time because the surface had a hard time staying hot. It would be great if there was a cover that fit the shape of the grill burner. - The instructions and product information were only in Japanese. I, unfortunately, do not read Japanese.
Nice quality grill, needs English instructions
The grill is very sturdy; I did not have any concerns about it tipping or falling apart. I was impressed with the quality of the cast iron. The grill is very heavy; I would not bring this on a backpacking trip, but would consider packing it for car camping. The only issue I ran into setting it up was that the instructions came only in Japanese. I had to Google Translate the entire booklet.
great little grill
This has ended up being a favorite. I always use it on high so I can’t speak to its ability to stay lit when set on low. Actually before buying it I was concerned that it wouldn’t get hot enough but if you allow the cast iron grill to heat up before placing your foods, the heat has been perfect for everything from bacon, sausages, burgers, chicken thighs, trout, veggies and strips of beef. So far we’ve used it with isobutane only. The pan meant to keep the underside cooler and catch grease works wonderfully. That grease-catching function is so important when cooking bacon! It made clean up so much easier than other portable (and non-portable) grills we’ve had. Note: the grill slopes to the center slit so you won’t be able to cook anything runny like eggs or pancakes.
Good small griddle.
This grill works well. It doesn't get as hot as I would like and it had trouble staying lit at the lowest setting. I use it at the highest setting all the time and it does the job. I have only used propane with the kivea converter so maybe not as effective in that application, although I think propane is higher pressure. The carrying case fits very snug around the corners and takes some care to squeeze it in without wear on the nylon.
Car-camping grill -> yes! Backpacking grill -> no!
Solid car-camping grill...yes! Backpacking/backcoutnry grill...no way! Based on some reviews I read online, it seemed like some people were planning to use this for backpacking...it is WAY too heacy and big for that! But if you are looking for a solid option for car-camping, this might do it for ya. I wasn't able to book a camping trip and was eager to try out the grill, so I tossed three pork chops on there and off we went! Pros: 1- The carrying case and tightening strap give the grill a nice secure traveling envelope for the back of your car/truck. 2- I love that the fuel cannisters are interchangable with my backcountry coooking gear...no worryign about buying specific cannisters or mixing them up. 3- Thebuilt-in igniter is just one more user-friendly feature...don't need to worry about always having a lighter with you. 4- Once the cast iron cooktop is seasoned, there is great flavoring to be cooked into this thing! 5- The juices/fat collection tray underneath helps keep the mess off your picnic table and allows easy cleanup. Cons: 1- The instructions were in Japanese! I wasn't too sure which dial position was high versus low. Maybe some kinda image on the plastic with three flames could indicate high, then only one flame with an X through it for off/closed...would have easily solved the problem. *or I can just learn to read Japanese!) 2- If there was ever an issue with the igniter, you would likely need one of the long barrel grill lighters to ignite the flame. 3- Cooking during the day, I had a very hard time observing any flame. As I kept the pork chops on, they continued to sizzle, so I knew it was working, just could not seem any flames. I am not sure what the right fix is here, but I definitely stopped/started a few times to listen for the sound the flames make against the cast iron. 4- The cast iron cooktop needs to be seasoned. I didnt read this until after my first cook...not a huge deal, just one more step in the process. 5- Price...I've seen in online in the range of $250-$300. Seems like there are also other options in that range with a bigger grilling surface area.
