My third time using the Kingdom 4 tent and rainfly was a great experience! I have the process down now! I agree that the instructions can be a bit clearer and yes, the single support pole for the top can be put in the sleeve lots sooner than instructions say. I'm tall so handling this by myself was no big deal, but can see that those of shorter stature may need extra hands/height. Don't even need instructions anymore -- yay! Love the oodles of mesh pockets to stash gear and the ample vestibule for shoes, firewood, cooler, etc. I'm a 'party of one' and after moving in with Kingdom Cot 3, a REI folding side table plus folding camp chair, I have PLENTY of room for backpack, duffel bag, bins, shoes, etc. Room to dress standing up -- heaven! This tent is an upgrade from the also-great Half Dome 2 Plus as I do not want to sleep on the ground and do everything else from a seated position (I've paid my dues in that area!). I had 3 nights in a row of rain (no wind but one night especially heavy rain for 6+ hours!). I had one or both rainfly vents open the entire 3 nights and did NOT have any leaking. However, after poking one of the saturated velcro tabs with my finger, I did get ONE drip of water on the floor. I do not call that 'leaking' though, as I pretty much instigated it. The rainfly vents do allow great air circulation and be sure to keep the rainfly taut so you have space between the mesh tent and fly to also promote air flow. The tent is big so even if you get at 12 ft. x 12 ft. tent pad, you may not have enough space to add on the Kingdom Mud Room, so be sure to find out what kind of space you have before you bring along the Mud Room. I love the quality of REI products and this tent has the quality I expected, enjoy, and paid for. I feel very comfortable, safe, dry, and protected in this tent. I recommend it highly!
Spent the week camping in this tent and was able to experience rain and high winds. With foot print tent stayed dry and tent held firm against Hugh winds. This tent has plastic joints and upon setting it up before we left to go camping the slightly cumbersome middle framing poles broke the plastic 3 days before our trip. REI has another one in the mail and by the grace of God had it in at my doorstep about an hour before we took off. I was able to catch a video of some lesser wind on our last day, but couldn’t figure out how to upload it so here is a photo. So happy with this tent. Thank you REI!!
My Kingdom 4 finally arrived. I sat it up, actually was able to set it up by myself in about 15 minutes. Everything went together well. The poles are a little questionable but given the way everything goes together I'm hoping they'll be ok in a big wind as long as the tent has the guylines set correctly. Once I had it up I was impressed. Then....... it rained. I had read that some people had problems with rain coming in through the roof vents, but I read other reviews that had no problems. Well, there is a problem, it rained but not a lot of wind and it was not a crazy downpour, just a good steady rain. Check in the tent afterward and like they say a picture is worth a thousand words. 3 puddles on the floor. This most assuredly is a design flaw that needs fixed. REI web admins PLEASE alert your design team this needs fixed. REI should replace these defective flys to everyone wh bought one. I honestly like the tent overall enough that I could probably fix the issue by applying thin strips of velco to the edges of the roof vents so they close completely. But then it's going to be a pain to open then once the tent is up. It's really obvious that there is not enough overlap. REI please make this right, because this is otherwise a great tent. But at this time I would not recommend it to anyone.
This is a great fair weather tent - the poles feel a bit thin for strong winds, but for my purposes, it's great. Setup advice: 1. Get the footprint - it makes it easier to setup by anchoring the corners, and it shows you what space you need to clear for the tent 2. Insert the short center cross piece into the sleeves *before* standing the tent up (the instructions have you do it afterwards, and it's nearly impossible to do it then. Don't insert the ends into the grommits until afterwards, but get it into the sleeve. I can set it up myself, however putting on the rainfly, and rolling things up afterwards, are somewhat easier with two people. Room for improvement: * there are separate compartments in the backpack case for the tent and rainfly, there should be a third one for the poles and stakes.
This tent was worth every penny
Bottom line: Luxurious amounts of space in a compact kit. We do a lot of car camping but have stuck with our backpack-size tent, which is up in minutes as we watch our friends struggle with heavy bags, huge poles and confusing set-ups of their larger tents. This tent changed our mind, and we'll be bringing it car camping from now on. The carry bag is compact and pretty light, with separate sections for the various pieces so you can find everything easily and fit it all back in when it's time to go home. One part of the set-up directions were a little confusing at first, but once you know which poles are which, it comes together pretty easily. BTW, if you are short (under 5'2") you may have trouble reaching some of the higher clips. But it's sure luxurious to be able to stand up inside your tent. Felt super spacious with just three of us in there - almost feel like you fit five people, maybe even six, esp. if some are kids. Love all the storage pockets around the interior, really helped to keep the tent de-cluttered, and vestibule area out back provides nice outdoor storage. Color scheme gives off a nice woodsy vibe. Our small tent is bright orange, but seems a bit much for this size. This is understated and blends in well to the environment. No chance to test in wet weather yet. Feel confident it would do well, except not sure why the rainfly doesn't extend a couple inches away from the entrance (like the old one appeared to) - seems like water could just drip right in. But again, didn't get a chance to test.
Firstly, we absolutely loved this tent, it's so easy to put up and take back down and store in the generously sized bag. The poles feel study and high quality, the clips (rather than threading poles through sleeves) make set up a breeze. Build quality feels good, the pockets along the whole sides are very convenient neither of us are tall but the tent felt airy and incredibly spacious with plenty of space for a queen mattress some storage creates as nightstands, and our luggage for the weekend. We also added the garage/mud room, definitely smaller than the model it is replacing but it created a wonderful entry area into the tent - with space to set up a small table or store plenty of gear. I was convinced we had the perfect car camping tent for us... And then it rained. Other reviews mention it and sadly it's true, the design of the rainfly is flawed and there is no way to stop rain from coming in through the 4 vents. I have been hoping and hoping that this would be officially acknowledged as a flaw or fault and allow us to trade in the rain fly for a 'non-flawed' rain fly. As of yet, it hasn't happened as the year return period comes to an end it will be with sadness and regret that we are forced to return it. For the price of this tent, water leaking in from all 4 top vents is simply inexcusable. REI - please offer a solution for this. If this issue was fixed then, without a doubt, this would be a 5* tent and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new 2020/2021 version.
I understand that the tent is supposed to be airy to be more comfortable in warm weather, which is why a lot of the material is screen. But, the fly shouldn't have vents right over the center that leak when it rains. Or, they should be designed to not leak when closed. The overall design is flawed and harder to set up than it needs to be, along with a challenge to set it up symmetrically. The instructions are practically useless. In a tent like this, I'd expect interior attachment loops or rings to suspend lanterns, clothes lines, etc. It does not appear much thought was put into that. The tent is roomy and somewhat reasonably priced, if that's all you're looking for.
This tent is a huge upgrade from our 2 person backpacking tent. It easily fit 2 adults and a medium size dog plus our bags with room to spare. We happened to have 3 people available to set the tent up, but I think 2 people could do it easily. It might be more of a challenge for 1 person. The tent held up great against some short downpours and kept us comfortable in mid-50 overnight temperatures. We loved how spacious it was (even if it is a bit of overkill for 2 people) and how we could stand in the tent to change- no more shimmying on the floor! This is definitely going to be our go-to car camping tent from now on.
I really want to love this tent but after testing it in heavy rain I can see how it is inevitable that water will leak in from the 4 vents. Note, I positioned the tent so that the vents are not in the wind direction. The vents were closed shut and looked to be as sealed as it can get. Next morning I checked inside the tent and discovered 4 water puddles each about 3 inches in diameter. REI PLEASE REDESIGN THE RAINFLY VENTS, LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!
