Doubtful that you will find a better support/weight ratio in a hiking boot. Why 4 stars? Material starting to come apart on both sides of the toe caps after 15ish miles off trail and 100ish miles on trail. If it was on one side on one boot I would attribute it to abuse or a miss-placed step but in this case the separation is equal indicating adhesion failure. Otherwise the boots have been durable and would buy another pair.
I purchased these to replace my 7 year old Salewa Alp trainers that eventually lost their waterproofing capabilities. I was looking for a simple looking boot primarily for backpacking & hiking but boots I could wear on snow days or shoveling my driveway in. These boots fit my aesthetic, I think Solomon made a great looking boot. Clean lines. Looks good with a pair of jeans. All the tech hidden underneath the upper and doesn’t scream “techy-hiking-boot”. INITIAL THOUGHTS Wearing them indoors I immediately noticed they are VERY LIGHT on my feet, much lighter than any other hiking boot I’ve owned. Solomons Contagrip is nice, maybe too soft to wear daily around town/city but will grip well on wet rocks and trails. I have long, low volume feet with normal arches and I can feel a modest amount of arch support (I may have to invest in inserts). With the boots laced tightly, my heel also feels locked down. The toe box feels snug but not tight, comparable to other Solomon boots IMO. Again, putting the on the trail will be the ultimate test of fit and last but out of the box these Solomon Outbacks feel great. 3/5 stars based only on looks and feel. durability and feel on the trail will affect this rating later on.
I have taken these everywhere. Peru (Incan Trail), Ireland, Scotland, almost every national park in the US. I absolutely love them incredible grip in rain and snow. As well as great traction in the sand and on top of sandy rocks. I have never had a problem with rub like the other users but I am also using hiking socks with them at all times..... I highly recommend for quick hikes or week long hikes. I have yet to test them for a month long hike yet but they are so light I plan on doing that very very soon.
Light weight with great protection. I wish the ankle had more support. It seems like it’s more for debris protection.
First off, Hallelujah! My feet are happy again! I was intrigued by the weight spec and decided to purchase Salomon boots again after trying several other brands looking for something with a bit less weight than my old Quest 4D's (and also sub $ 250 price point). I had specifically been looking for a boot for a 12 day wilderness trek in Northern New Mexico. I had tried the Oboz Tamarack, Danner Crag Rat (very heavy), Vasque Breeze 3 and Vasque St. Elias but all of them fell short on comfort and or support after 3-5 miles on day hikes or daily use at work. ...and while I love my Altra Lone Peak 3.0 mids I figured I may want a little more substantial boot for my multi day trek. I had worn out a pair of Salomon Quest 4D boots and really did not want the overkill look and bulkiness/extra weight. The Outback 500 feels lighter than its spec weight. I am also impressed with the appearance and out of the box comfort despite the advanced chassis rigidity . I have not worn these for more than 6 miles at a time yet but these are so comfortable and decent looking for bumming around town I have a hard time not wearing them everyday. On the limited hikes I have taken so far I have tested the abrasive resistance of the Cordura. They pass scraping on rocks and mucking through thick brush and such. The signature Salomon advanced chassis stiffness/support mated with Energyfoam midsole seems to be a recipe for happy feet. Some folks may want to add an orthotic insole but the factory Ortholite is in fact "super light" but it is amazingly supportive as part of the Salomon fit. If you read this far you know I am geeked about these boots. I find them to be the best value in the $ 200 range. I plan to get a second pair in the desert tan color.
I sort of stumbled on these boots and bought them on sale and I have loved them. I’ve hiked in them many times and including a trek in the Andes on my way to Machu Picchu. I’ve never had a problem with them. They are very light weight and waterproof. I highly recommend them…
Bought these 3 days ago. Tried them on in the store after about 6 other pairs of boots; as soon as I slid my foot inside I wanted them. The fit and amount of cushioning is perfect! The weight is perfect except for one major flaw: when my foot bends upward and the toe box bends the cordura creases and pushes into the tops of my feet pinching uncomfortably. I cannot see myself walking for any aount of time in these especially when walking a steep grade that requires more energy pushing off the tips of your toes. Havent seen any other reviews w this issue so maybe I got a bum pair?

The boots that I am trying to replace where a Saloman winter Boot I used then year round and loved them But after miles and miles of use and years being uesd and my feet are getting wider I needed a new boot. After trying every boot on at REI. I decided that these felt the best. But after a few short hikes it was apparent that these boots are too hard on the soles of my feet. Instead of being able to hike 7 to 10 miles with almost no foot pain. It felt like I was strapping a brick to my foot and walking on it. The good thing about these boots is they are very light and have good support for your ankles and they have good traction. Unfortunately they have no cushioning in the sole like an old jungle military boot.

Had these for 2 months and have used them for daily walks - clocking up 60 miles a week in that time. The good things first - lightweight, look great, comfortable, excellent grip (as always across Salomon range in my experience), waterproof and easy to clean. All very positive however I have quickly found them difficult to get the laces tight across the entire foot - with the lace slipping as you try to tighten and only the final 2 eyelets giving any grip/security to the foot - not sure this is due to the materials being used or the eyelets but unless I put some effort into tightening the laces for the full length of the boot they can feel lose on my foot - not a major issue I suppose but have been walking in Salomon for last 10 years never really had the issue before. The more worrying issue however is the seam already starting to fail on the rubber toe protector - this happened after a month of walking and whilst as yet has not got significantly worse it is only a matter of time before they start to fail (see photo). This has happened before on my last pair of Ultra Wide GTX but it took 2 summers of walking to occur not 2 months. Will see how they last but am already browsing for new boots.

Covered over 50 miles with pack in tough terrain, much off trail. Great shoe!
