Very Comfortable Well-Designed Pack in Claret!!

The color shown for Plum Red is inaccurate; I bought the pack in the store, and it is a luminous burgundy/claret color. The longer I look at it, the more I like the color. To see an accurate rendition of the color, go to "write a review" and this backpack in the actual color for Plum Red will show up. (Plum Red does not describe the color.) It is a Claret / burgundy but with a slight sheen that appears lighter and quite beautiful in the sun. It appears to be a deeper rich color when overcast - and not the flat dull color as REI shows it to be (there's a low sheen to the material also). See the photo in review from "Maggie" in a turquoise T-shirt to see a more accurate rendition of the color. I believe the other color option (blueish) is better than shown too. I went into REI thinking I'd buy a Patagonia backpack I saw online. When it was on my back, the shoulder straps were thick and formless and it did not rest on my body as such. It also had nothing but cute style to offer. Conversely, the Osprey straps are thinner, exceptionally well made, form-fitting, and sit snugly into my shoulders. I should add that I have one shoulder lower and smaller than the other due to Scoliosis - (curvature of the spine) so I was very pleased with the way these straps did not slide off. I'm fairly broad shouldered generally, but with one lower shoulder, sometimes straps will slide. I am 5'9", 170 pounds, with a 47% thoracic (upper spine) curve and few packs manage to take the weight off my back, I found this pack to be incredibly comfortable. It fit snugly against my back and it appeared to stand straight and slim and close to my back when the waist belt was closed. There was no sag, slouch, or gaping space between my back and pack. The waist belt shifts all weight to the hips and does it very well. In my 40 years of wearing packs, this was the most comfortable I've worn. It appears overly stuffed on REI, however, In person it appears slim, lightweight, and not at all bulky. Again, see the photo under the section "write a review." I've added some photos, but they are mostly to show color. The brightest is the one shown close to window--the others do not show the color as well. I didn't go shopping for the 28L pack or for a pack with a hydration bag, however, I would happily take this on longer hikes of 10 or more miles and am quite sure it will be very comfortable. I put a 5lb weight in pack at the store and didn't feel it, whereas I did with other backs. The waist belt has zipped pockets big enough for snacks, bandana, small sunscreen, etc. The stretchy pockets that they had in an Osprey 30L Mens pack would have been a better option on the sides in my opinion, but I guess they figure that with a hydration pack, you don't need stretchy water-bottle pockets. As pockets go, these are exceptionally roomy and fit a 20oz Hydro-flask (should you opt to not use the hydration pack), with no room to spare at the top, but plenty on either side. The zips open from the bottom up which I found hard to locate with pack on, but some kind of key fob or other jangly item might help to find them. Otherwise, I think you are stuck with the waist pockets for access while pack is on, and which are ample enough for most trail needs. The two side pockets I expect (just to give you an idea of size) could each fit 10 pairs of SmartWool socks. There is another exterior large pocket in front of the pack and located behind the flap that is the face of the pack and which buckles at the top to right and left. At the bottom of the "flap" it says Skimmer 28-- just so you know what I'm describing. Behind that flap front is a large bucket-like pocket with an accordion-style opening at sides; it can lay flat and clean behind the flap, or you can stuff it and it expands. I expect a few t-shirts could fit in there just to give you an idea of size. It is not zipped but the flap covers it completely and extends wider across the pack than the bucket-like deep pocket behind it. The interior of pack has no pockets that I can see aside from the place for the hydration pack. It is kind of like a stuff sack. I would expect one could fit plenty of gear in there in packing cubes etc.: enough clothing for 4-5 mild weather days, food, toiletries, towel and more. I have not used the hydration bladder yet so cannot speak to that. I plan to make it work as well as possible because I don't want a large hydro-flask's extra weight on my body especially on long hikes. I tried on packs of all sizes for two hours yesterday and did not intend on getting anything bigger than a 24L, but this was so comfortable and sat well that I figured I should get it for longer hikes. I'm still looking for a smaller day pack 16-20L so I can retire by 20-year old Kelty pack of many zipped, netted, fobbed, lined, and other pockets-- a well-made pack of yesteryear.

Miss the open mesh pockets!!!

I am looking to replace my 10year old Mira 26 pack. This fits much better but I don't like that it doesn't have the open mesh pockets on the sides which I like for easy access to my cellphone, topo map and bear spray! Those side pockets now are closed with no easy access as the zipper closes at the bottom (opens at the bottom first...seems counterintuitive and easier to lose items if you don't close it all the way!). Also don't like the "hidden" smaller top pocket which in other packs are on the "outside" of the bigger zippered middle.

Perfect on 12 mile hikes in cooler weather

I bought this before a trip to the UP of Michigan where I did two 12 mile hikes. This pack carries the perfect amount of water in the hydration bladder (its an older model of Osprey's so you have to remove the drinking nozzle to clear the tube) for myself for a day long hike, but there was enough room in the main area of pack to place my Camelbak bladder with food and layers. Temperatures ranged each day between 30 to 50 degrees during the hike and it rained/snowed one of those days. So I needed a lot of layers options that could be stored. I love the pocket options for quick to reach snacks and toiletries for bathroom pit stops. I am 5'5" and 165 lbs, I would say my torso is a bit shorter than average. It feels like a good fit and I like the options of clipping up top and at the waist for extra support.

Spacious daypack with a great bladder

I’ve had my fair share of hydration day packs and this is by far the best. The Osprey hydration bladder is so easy to fill, and slips back easily into the backpack. And there is lots of space in the daypack for all my families hiking needs (snacks, folding hiking sticks, extra water, sunscreen and bug spray, ponchos, etc). Only thing I wish it had more of were smaller pockets on the inside so I can more easily find the little things (but it does have 2 side pockets, and 2 other zippered pockets, plus the two tiny pockets on the hip, but they don’t even hold my cell, so they are pretty irrelevant for me.

Great pack, but it is on the shorter side

I love the hip pockets, stuff sack, and attachment points for poles and other gear. As usual with REI and Osprey the quality seems solid. Unfortunately I had to return because as a fairly tall woman (5'8") the back on this pack was just too short, making the hip belt sit too high to be comfortable. It says it fits back measurements 14-19 inches. My back measures 18-19 inches and this was definitely too short for me, so if your measurements are on the higher end of their estimate this might not be the pack for you. I switched to the men's version (Skarab) and it fits much better!

Great pack, only a few small tweaks!

I’ve loved this pack so far and it’s a great day hike pack. After venturing out with my REI Co-op 65L Traverse pack on multiple hikes in Shenandoah, I knew I needed something smaller for my quicker hikes but would still allow plenty of storage for my camping stove + supplies, my hammock, and extras for shedding layers, knives, etc. This pack comes with a 2.5L Osprey water bladder but does not include a rain-cover, so thats one thing to keep in mind when purchasing! (Though I think the trade off is fair, especially price considered) I do wish the hip belt packs were built larger as I can’t even fit my phone into them like I can with my Traverse pack. For me, one of the beauties of the fanny pack accessibility is the quick store and go. These pockets are lightweight and great for little essentials like a clif bar and some chapstick, but don’t work as well for me when I want to quickly pull my phone out for plant/animal ID! The only other main adjustment I would make is a better-enclosed mesh/slide-in pocket on the zipper top of the pack—this is where I find it easiest to store my rain-cover and it always slips out without fail. I may add on a simple Velcro attachment just to prevent this problem. All in all, this is a great pack and I’m super happy with my first Osprey purchase!

Pockets on pockets on pockets on pockets.

Broke this pack in on an eight-hour 14er - so, lots of snacks and lots of water and lots of layers to carry! Between the large water bladder, and all the pocket options of different shapes and sizes, this was the perfect pack to have on the mountain. I particularly like this pack because of the hip straps that, when clipped together, shift the pack's weight onto your hips and off of your back. It's also a little narrower/longer than my other packs, which makes it ideal for smaller women like me who are uncomfortable wearing wider/broader packs that put strain on the shoulders. I would absolutely recommend this pack for overnight backpacking trips or just longer hikes in general. Added bonus: the color is really cute! Much more unique than the black and grey options I saw in other brands when I was shopping for a new pack.

Great day pack for a Trail Excursion

A basic day pack with just the right amount of pockets. Two zippered compartments on pack, an open pouch lining the front, and 2 useless zippered tiny pockets on the waist belt. The two tiny zippered pockets (for items like lip protection tubes and car keys) are NOT ACCESSIBLE when pack is on. One cannot reach the pockets while wearing the pack. These pockets should be further out on the pack waist strap so they are readily available to easily access. Also, this pack comes with no rain cover.

Very lightweight and good fit but…

Took this on a 10-day hiking trip to Scotland recently. Very lightweight, and at 5’2”, I found the shoulder straps to be quite comfortable. However, I do NOT like the hydration bladder.. you have to buy more parts that make the hose quick-release from the bladder. However, the side pockets are not set up for water bottles. They angle and zip the wrong way. Also, because I have older arthritic hands, I found the lack of loops to tighten the waist belt a serious omission. Trying to just pull on the ends of the straps was no fun. I also agree with others that the size and location of the small zip pockets on the hip belt leaves much to be desired. Finally, I thought I would like the large open pocket on the back for quickly stuffing something in there, but found it didn’t work that quickly at all. Osprey could have done much better.
