Overall good, but with a few flaws
I got the TopGrip to transport my SUP paddle. It fits inside my vehicle, but it's an awkward fit, so rooftopping it seemed like a good alternative. The TopGrip is definitely a lot more secure than my old method (using those thick rubber-coated twist ties to lash it to my rack). They seem pretty robust, and are significantly larger than I thought they would be. The ratcheting action is pretty neat, although I have to depress the release buttons to push the clamps all the way down to the paddle shaft. Perhaps the ratcheting will loosen up with time and it will be easier. It's not difficult to do now, though. As for cons, there are a couple of minor ones. First, I attached the TopGrips to a Yakima LoadWarrior roof basket, which has round bars in the standard Yakima diameter. The TopGrip comes with round bar adapters to mount it, but I couldn't get them tight enough so that they didn't rotate on the bars. I had to cut a strip of old bicycle inner tube and wrap that around the bar, and then put the clips around that. It seemed to do the trick nicely and they don't rotate at all now. However, because of the design and the way the TopGrip clamps mate with the round bar adapters, they'll only play nicely with each other if you are putting the two together are right angles to one another. Since I had to mount mine to the sides of the LoadWarrior (not enough room on top with the SUP pads and a bike rack up there already), I needed to use a different angle. I had to REALLY crank the clamps onto the round bar adapters in order for them not to wiggle. It's doable, but I think a better design interface could easily be utilized so that you could mate the two at any angle necessary for your needs. Lastly, the little plastic covers for the SKS lock cores are really loose and don't stay in. I knew that any road vibration and wind would allow them to pop right out. If you are planning on using SKS locks, it's not a problem. But I'm not. So I had to glue the covers into the lock cores.
Great quality and easy to use.
Larger than I thought they would be. Super sturdy and easy to use. Love the design and won't scratch my paddle handle. Pricie, but will work well.
