Coffee for the Discerning Backpacker
I’ve been drinking this since it came out a few months ago and can honestly say it surpasses anything I thought an instant coffee could be. As someone who can tolerate black coffee but really prefers cream and sugar, this hits the nail on the head. It’s not sickly sweet like a lot of instant coffees with cream and sugar added. This has a really nice balance to it and I’ve started bringing it along on backpacking trips instead of the Alpine Start original blend, which is what my husband drinks. I’m so glad they made it with coconut cream so those of us with dairy allergies can enjoy it too!!
My Favorite New Flavor!
I thought I was done having to think about my coffee choices after finding the original Alpine Start. Sometimes it's good to be wrong. I was definitely impressed when they announced their new flavors, it being especially noteworthy that both are dairy-free. The Coconut Creamer Latte kills it, and is far and away my favorite backcountry start to the day. It's full-bodied, smooth, and creamy, bringing a smile to anyone's face as you watch the sun come up. I promise you won't be disappointed by making Alpine Start your choice for that next adventure!
Huge letdown!
I've seen people raving about Alpine Start coffee for a few months now and knew I wanted to try it when I finished my current stash of Folgers instant coffee. Turns out, I'd rather have the Folgers! I was so disappointed in this. The box claims to be "rich, creamy and sweet" but the only flavor profile I was getting was burnt. Tried three separate packets thinking maybe it was just a weird one off, but all three tasted burnt (and my water wasn't that hot, so it's not like I burnt it myself). Not a hint of sweetness, and honestly, not drinkable. I gave the other two packets away and wouldn't recommend.
Aroma of sour milk
I though that I would try this coffee out as an easy way to make my morning coffee for an upcoming hike. I chose this particular variety because like cream in my coffee. I actually have no illusions about freeze dried coffee tasting as good as pour over on the trail, but this was really bad. If you have ever put mildly rancid milk in your coffee by mistake then you understand how this tastes. It has the aroma om sour milk as well. Maybe I got a bad batch, I don't know but would not recommend this to anyone. You will have a better experience with off the shelf grocery store instant coffee and powdered creamer...and save yourself money in the process.
The most disgusting coffee on Earth
Me: coffee snob who can describe coffee the way wine enthusiasts describe wine My husband: will drink anything that’s brownish black We both thought that this was the most disgusting coffee we’ve ever tasted. My husband wouldn’t even finish the cup, and he will drink reheated day old no-name coffee. We threw it away. I’m lactose intolerant, so it isn’t the coconut milk. I bought this BECAUSE it was coconut milk based. At first, there’s a definite “oo, this is interesting,” but then the full flavor profile hits you and you want to wash your tongue. I haven’t tried any other Alpine Start coffee, so I don’t know if it’s something about how they process the coffee, or how they process the coconut, but I definitely don’t recommend this one!
Love it!
I was hesitant to try this because of some of the reviews but I'm glad I went for it. I really loved it! It's very difficult to find a dry/powdered creamer that doesn't have dairy in it and particularly one that is creamy enough, mixes well and doesn't taste super coconut-y. This checks off all of those boxes. This is the backpacking coffee of my dreams, very creamy and mixes so well with no clumps. I add a touch of my own sweetener to it since it's unsweetened. I use it at home now too, it's so handy to keep around for a quick cup without having to fire up the coffee maker or espresso machine.
Decent-Option / But is it the best?
So I have tried this instant coffee from REI this am it’s not the worst way to drink plane coffee and it reminds me a little of a certain bean roast from Italy. you don’t get a massive hit on any Discernible taste with the creamer either. Each box has 5 packets each pack weighs 0.49 ounces and it’s very convenient and packable for 5 day supply and one person. However that’s five extra things of trash to pack out and for the cost of $9 I would go out and buy instant coffee/ powdered creamer/ smidge of fake sugar and combine them all myself in a single small Loksak /Opsak and bring it with me at around $10 for 12-15 servings. It’s really more a convenient factor to consider for yourself. Short hiking trips or camping hands down great option and lightweight.
Bitter and burnt
Honestly this doesn't even taste anything like coffee.
Burnt; no sense of creamy / sweetness
This had a very off putting burnt taste. Decidedly not creamy or sweet in any way; with a not so wonderful gritty mouth feel.
Meh
Once I added some sugar I liked it a lot! I usually don't like sweet coffee but on it's own I found this to have an odd taste. The sugar took care of it thought :) Would buy again on sale and remember some sweetener.
