best radios I have owned
Great radio, audio is crystal clear. The NOAA feature is good to have and I like the flashlight. The app that comes with it is helpful for radio settings and to share our location on a map. We usually camp with a big group but not always everyone can leave at the same time so this way we can sent our location of our back country camp site. It took a bit of learning on how to use the app but now we love it!
The extra features don't quite hit the mark.
I really wanted to like this radio and its off-grid texting feature, but the reality fell far from expectations. On the positive side, as a radio, it works fine. Audio quality is decent. The little flash light on top is handy. And the weather radio and weather radio alert function work quite nicely. However, there are other elements of this radio that are quite annoying (and some that are not well thought out by the designers.). For starters, it’s still loud even on its lowest volume setting. This isn’t usually a problem until this radio is used in a quiet setting. In bright daylight, the display is extremely difficult to read. The blue LED shining through translucent dark plastic doesn’t make it easy to observe. This isn’t so much a problem indoors, but outdoors you practically have to cover the display with your hand to read it. The buttons are black and set on the black body of radio. This makes it extremely difficult to change settings when it’s dark. Especially since the buttons are not labeled but use shapes to denote function. I imagine most frs radio manufactures exaggerate the range of their radios. This one is certainly no different. I’m lucky if I get one mile. Usually it’s far less. I suppose if I were talking from mountain top to mountain top I’d get better, but anything (and I mean anything) between you and the other radio is going to degrade the range greatly. And finally, onto the digital side of its communication. I really wanted to like this functionality, but it just doesn’t work well in this situation. The app is not very intuitive and the Bluetooth range between the radio and your phone seems far shorter than I’ve encountered with other Bluetooth devices. And the observed dismal range between the radios doesn’t encourage its usage. Due to restrictions on the frequency band these radios use, digital communication is discouraged and restricted. For this reason, there is no automatic updating of people’s location. This has to be done manually. Also, there’s a thirty second timeout between messages. That means, you have to wait at least thirty seconds to send another message, or to resend a failed message. As I said, the app is not very intuitive, and it takes a little while of figuring it out to learn how to use it. Once you do learn, there’s the added frustration of trying to send message and hoping it gets through. It’s honestly easier to just talk over the radio at that point. In an outdoor setting, with the limited range, I’m not sure where the digital texting and map function would be reliable enough to be used. Perhaps in a setting where you and the other radio are reliably closer but it’s extremely loud it could come in handy. I had high hopes for this gadget, but in the end, it’ll be getting used as two-way radio. The off-grid digital texting and mapping do not justify the added cost. If you want that, there are other devices at REI that can do that better.
Battery does not last more than a season
I was trying to pick between this and the mesh. I figured I would go with this as I can use the walkie talkie part in addition to texting with my phone. Well shoot. Only works as long as you have a clear line between you and the other talker otherwise you can expect them to stop working just like any others. Remember to download the app while you have WiFi or cell service if you want to use the texting feature otherwise you’re stuck with radios. They were functional overall. The reason for two stars. Maybe I should give one? Is that we charged them the next year for use and they do not work. The battery is non functional. Good thing they take AA batteries. What a waste. I would go with the mesh for texting (they have great reviews) and separate radios if you want to talk.
Doesn't work
Right out of the box, one of the radios doesn't work. Fully charged both radios; turned them on; turned them off again and came back a couple hours later - one radio will not turn on, will not charge, will not do anything.
Only one Worked
These were a great buy for the first 30 minutes. After a few uses one suddenly stopped working for good. REI was great at the customer service return on the back end which is another reason I’ll keep shopping here.
