R1 and R2 TechFace Jackets: Different but AWESOME!
I'm writing my review for the R2 TechFace and R1 Techface simultaneously because both of these jackets, though seemingly the same, are very different. Both, however, are awesome! See the review of the R1 TechFace with the same title. As for the R2, although I gave the R1 a 5-star rating, I gave the R2 a 4-star rating because it is a very different cut. The R2 is very wide and somewhat baggy versus the R1 which is a very trim/athletic fit. It is also pretty heavy weighing in a 18 oz (for some reason I am always suspicious of a garmet that weighs more than 14-16 oz). I am also somewhat concerned that this piece won't keep the wind from blowing up underneath the waist hem because it does not have a cinch cord for the waist. Also, I would agree with what many other reviewers have said, you could easily size down if you wanted a more trim fit. I didn't want to beacuse I do not like my jackets short. I nearly returned this jacket upon thefirst impression; however, I got it for such an amazing price that I had to give it a week's use before making a final decision on it. After a few days I started to realize I was looking at this jacket all wrong and decided to keep this jacket. Once I started to look at this jacket differently than a warmer version of the R1 TF, I realized it really is awesome. Bottom line, despite the 4-stars, I would highly recommend both the R1 and R2 TF jackets, just know what you're getting before buying either. What I love about the R2 is that it is warm, I mean really warm. I have been taking the dog for a walk early in the morning for a couple weeks, at times in the mid-to-low 30s and I'm very warm and comfortable, even with the wind blowing. I'm never too warm and I'm never cold. I would imagine that this is a great jacket for outdoor activities where you are not working as hard versus the R1 which is clearly intended for high-output activities. I do want to try this jacket in cold high output conditions to see how well it performs. I also love how soft and comfortable this jacket is. It isn't so big and baggy that it isn't functional but, rather, it is just more generous with plenty of room to layer underneath, and it is so much more comfortable and easy to wear. Basically, where the R1 is close-fitting (perfect for running in cold, windy, light-rain conditions), the R2 wouldn't work the same way. And probably most important is that the outer face of the jacket protects you from wind and light rain. This is the game changer which makes this jacket worth buying (even if you have the original R1 and R2 like I do). I can't wait to get out into the mountain and on the trail with this jacket (in very cold conditions. I also think this will be a much better option to wear at night than a down jacket if I need an extra layer when sleeping in cold conditions. For reference, I purchased a size L, I am 6' 3", 205 lbs with an athletic build.

ended up wet on the inside
Thought I'd be able to use this for around town and for high energy activities. But moving through the woods it did not breathe like my other R gear, ended up wet on the inside. For me polartec is the only way from now on. I'll keep it for around town.

Great midlayer option

Bought this as a gift for my partner, who was looking for a mid-layer to warm up their usual snowboarding outfit. For reference, they usually wear a non-insulated shell with a heat-tech base layer, all of which wasn't cutting it on frigid days. I bought this as a mid-layer option that doesn't have too much volume. They also tried out the down sweater jacket from the same brand and the TechFace ended up fitting better, but that's because the wrong size was bought for the down sweater jacket, so it's not a fair comparison. We've gone for boarding a few days and he's very happy with the TechFace! All in all a successful buy for the purpose intended.

Great Jacket!

This is a great outer or mid layer jacket! I've been a huge fan of the R1 jacket for years, but the R2 TechFace may be my new favorite. I love the stretch material used around the cuffs. There was plenty of room for movement in the shoulders. The material around the waist was tighter than I expected given that I have the 32" waist. The tight fit is appreciated when standing, but is a little restrictive when sitting down. I was a little disappointed in the cheap feeling plastic that was used for the zipper box and pin. Size purchased: Medium Height & Weight: 6'1" 155lbs

Versatile Layer

I love this jacket. It's thin enough to add extra layers on top, but stretchy enough to accommodate layers underneath as well. With a base layer and thin fleece underneath, plus a hat and gloves, this has kept me warm in the high 20s/low 30s. It has also kept me dry in rain and snow. I was hesitant to buy because of the price tag. I'm glad I went for it. I just wish there were more pockets and that it had more of a flap between the zipper and my chin when it's zipped all the way up.

Best Jacket I've Ever Owned

This jacket is fantastic. It has it all. It looks great, it feels great, it's not too heavy, it's water resistant, relatively wind resistant, very warm, all while breathing nicely. I saw it in store, and immediately fell in love with it when I put it on. Even after I saw the price, which took me aback, I decided to buy it, and I'm happy that I did. Even being quite expensive, this jacket is well worth it. I've taken it on a few hiking/camping trips where the temperature and wind got bad, and this jacket kept me comfortable the entire time. My only issue with it was when an ember from a fire landed on the sleeve and burnt a small hole through it. Being made of polyester, the ember went through it like a hit knife through butter, but I can't really complain that this jacket isn't fire proof, just be careful around the campfire! I can't recommend this jacket enough.

Good Stuff

This a really nice piece of gear, warm, chest pocket (for stand alone wear), and great for layering. The R1 weighs 13 oz. this one weighs in at 18 oz. you will need a 4 L stuff sack instead of a 2.5 L. Just a heads up for space, and weight concerns the listed weight is incorrect. Thank's for looking

Perfect fleece + softshell

This is already my favorite jacket and mid-layer. Super comfortable on the inside but sleek on the outside and layers well. Definitely a bit warmer than my Patagonia Crosstrek fleece, plus it stops the wind and some water and is still very breathable. I'm 5'11", 155lbs with slightly long torso and the Medium is probably the best fitting jacket I have ever owned. Not too tight around my 33" waist either. I bought this and the OR Ascendant Jacket to compare breathable soft-shell midlayers and this just seems miles better. It is clearly more durable. Has a much cozier fluffy feel on the inside, and is just as warm and breathable, if not a little warmer. Somehow it is still about $50 cheaper too. Keep it up Patagonia, this is perfect.

Light yet warm, even below freezing

When I bought this, the salesman said that it may be too warm for hiking above in freezing temperatures. He was right. I went back and bought the R1 for above freezing temperature hikes and the R2 for those hikes with the temperatures down to the teens. I've worn it in fog, light rain. It's not bulky and very flexible whether hiking uphill, downhill or over rugged terrain. Definitely worth every cent!

This might replace my hoodie

This jacket is awesome. I have been wearing this and a non-cotton shirt in 30 degree weather while I have been shoveling snow. I paired it up with my Patagonia R1 Hoody and have been very comfortable in the 20’s while I have been working and hiking. To be honest tho, when you are standing/sitting around, you do get chilled in the 20’s. I haven’t put on a raincoat to see if I can stay warm in lower temps or reduced activity in the 20’s.

Tall dude approved

I never write reviews but I feel as if this jacket deserves one. Being 6’5” and 205lbs sometimes it’s hard to find jackets that are long enough but this jacket delivers. Perfect inside the hospital on long shifts and weekend hikes in chilly weather. I completely recommend.

Deceivingly warm, stylish, slim, tough

This jacket feels more like what I would traditionally call a fleece, but it certainly provides a great amount of heat given the high tech lining insulation. It feels like it is built like a rock and will last for a long time, like we have come to expect from Patagonia anyway. The brand itself is a significant force for good in a environment that has not traditionally incentivized sustainability, the brand has put its money where it’s mouth is with a venerable supply chain and it’s ironclad guarantee. Back to the jacket, the coating is water repellent and I have been in medium rain without getting any water soaking through. Even though there are not straps at the wrist cuffs, it holds well enough that the sleeves don’t make it over the wrist and on to the hands. The cut is fairly slim and thus stylish enough to wear on a night out on town.
