I have a few down jackets of various styles, but I needed one that fit my body type a little better for cold weather activities. I'm slim (5'4" & 110 llbs) have wider shoulders, a slightly long torso, and longer arms. Basically, I needed a more european fit jacket. This rab jacket seemed to fit the bill, plus it has a great hood. I did A LOT of research before purchasing this jacket, especially since I knew I could pay less for a jacket with similar qualities and reviews. However, this jacket met every one of my requirements so I bit the bullet and paid $220 for it. To it's credit, it fits like a dream. But, I'm disappointed. I wore this jacket once for a less than invigorating walk around a local park, and once to a meeting (I didn't wear it in the car or in the actual meeting. just from the car to the building). That's it. And it's stained. It looks as though any area of the jacket that has seen any moisture has darkened. I'm not a sweaty person. I've never had any issues with pit stains or stains on any of my other synthetic jackets or technical clothing. I'm puzzled as to why that happened with this jacket, and sad that I paid over $200 for a dream jacket that's most likely ruined after only two very pedestrian walks. I'm going to try to clean it, i don't have much to lose if I end up making it worse. In addition to this jacket's intolerance to moisture, material inside the jacket along the zipper has snagged and I haven't worn anything that could've snagged it. There are a few long, loose threads, and far too many feathers poke through for my taste. Neither of these things are deal breakers, but to have all of these issues in a jacket that retails for $280 is a little much.
This jacket is awesome. Super light...so light you don't think you are wearing one. BUT it is super warm. I have worn it in MN and CO in 15-40 degrees and it is really warm and wind proof. The hood is great and has a little firm "visor" so that you can see really well when wearing it. I don't need a heavy layer under it and when I was hiking in the mountains, it breathed with the warmth generated from hiking. Sizing is perfect and I love the fact it can pack down small in its own bag. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys the outdoors but needs to feel free to move. Great for hiking in the mountains or walking the dog in the snow.
I shopped hard for the jacket I had in mind. Down puffies with at least 700 fill, rip stop, good colors, microlight: not hard to find. But with a hood, covers the butt but isn't a trench, water resistant, AND cute? I finally found one in Rab, a brand I'd never heard of. The only complaint I have is that the arm holes are bit narrow. I bought a large and typically wear mediums, but could feel the bottom of the armhole touching my armpit. I likely do have bigger arms than off-the-rack brands tailor to, so fellow big-bicep-babes beware. I think sizing up is wise, but this jacket is a winner! I also can't wait to try this jacket in light rain or fog. The flexible brim on the hood is a nice touch and I think the outer material/treated down is going to be worth the $$$ Also, shout out to REI customer service.. there was a mix up at shipping and they totally took care of me. Thanks!
I'm 5'4, 110 lbs, and bought a size XS. It fits with room for layers but is flattering. The best part is that I can windmill my arms around and the hem doesn't ride up!! So mobility is great in this jacket. I bought this jacket to replace a bulky old North Face Agoncagua jacket. This is half the bulk and just as warm. It definitely keeps me warmer that my North Face Thermoball jacket and a fleece. I wore it over a t-shirt and lightweight fleece in 30 degree temperatures, was too warm, and shed the fleece. I would consider this jacket as suitable down to temperatures in the teens Fahrenheit by itself, or down to 0 degrees F with a good hardshell. I'm very happy overall with this purchase.
I purchased this jacket along some others because this was going to be my 1st down jacket and I wanted to look at all my options and compare. The fit is flattering. I am 5'2", weigh 105lbs and an xs fits perfect with plenty of room for extra layers underneath. The length is great because it was longer on my back compared to the other jackets and the length of the arms does over my wrists and the elastic makes it so warmth doesn't escape and cold doesn't get in. I do not feel constrained in it at all. It moves around with me which is great because im using this jacket for backpacking so I need something that gives me plenty of room without being bulky. It has VERY large pockets both the hand pockets and the chest one. I found it hard to fit my phone in some other models chest pocket but this was a generous size and easy to put in and out. The wired hood gives great protection from the snow/rain and you can pull on the sides of the hood to make it more fitted. The color I purchased was steel and was surprised that the inside of the coat was a bright orange/pink color but it looks good so I'm not complaining. This jacket has it's own pouch to pack in unlike other jackets I tried that packed into one of their pockets. It didn't pack down in its pouch as small as the other jackets I tried BUT you could compress it smaller if you are planning on backpacking with it and space is an important factor. All in all, this jacket is great except it's so expensive and I wish I could've bought it on sale but I still thought it was worth the money. This beat out several Mountain Hardwear jackets, including the Ghost Whisperer and the Arc'terixs Cerium LT.
I'm 5'7, 125 lbs, and have a size XS, which doesn't feel tight and leaves room for layers. The Rab Alpine Down Jacket is microlight indeed. As I am a person who tends to be active outdoors all year round, I have high expectations for my outdoor gear: It needs to be functional, affordable and well designed. The Rab jacket checks all the boxes: the 750-fill-power downs keep you warm without weighing you down, and the downs are ethically sourced, which is important to me. A down-filled hood keeps my head protected in case I forgot my hat. Additionally, the many pockets (including a chest pocket) provide ample storage place or keep my hands warm. I also like the compression bag the jacket comes with in case you want to conventiently store the jacket away on a hike. I also really love the color (eggplant), it's a nice dash of purple in the traditional black and gray of winter. The only downside I see about this jacket is the length, since I usually prefer a little bit of a longer jacket when opting for a really warm jacket.
The jacket has one issue for me, which is the sleeves are tight making it difficult to bed my elbows if I have even a thin shirt on (I'm 5'8", 150lbs). The length of the sleeves is great though, as most jackets run short on the arm length for me. I also liked the length of the jacket. Slightly longer than most so I don't get a draft if I bend over. The pockets are nice and deep and I like that there is a pocket on the chest for little things. I've had the jacket out in 20-40 degrees so far and it is plenty warm. So besides the sleeves being a little tight, this is the perfect jacket.
The best down jacket I’ve come across. Beautifully made and performs amazingly
Thanks have loved it !!! Warm warm warm ! Thanks!
I absolutely LOVE my Microlight jacket. It is incredibly warm and I love the longer length in the back. I am pretty tall at 5'11" and 150lbs and the Large fits perfectly in every way with plenty of room for layering underneath but not bulky and ill-fitting if I wear it alone over a baselayer. My only qualm is the stuff sack. It's a nice touch to have a separate stuff sack rather than just a pocket, but is there a way to attach the stuff sack in some way to a lash point inside the pocket so it doesn't get lost? Overall, it is an amazing jacket.
