Awesome shades, except...
WOW they are uncomfortable as purchased! The flexible, removable sunshades are made of a woven plastic fabric and the edges are very rough on my cheeks after a full day in the mountains. I bought some cheap black nail polish and painted liberally around the edges to smooth them out. One other comfort issue that is not so easily rectified- when I'm wearing a helmet and the glasses together they hurt the tops of my ears so I have to tilt the legs(?) off my ears. They are, however, protective, breathable, and they look great. I'll keep them for a while to see if I can get used to them...
Great frames, look for the Chameleon Lenses
I have this glasses which I purchased with the Chameleon Polarized+Photochromatic lenses. The frames, even with shields, are not quite as truly light-sealing as traditional glacier glasses, such as the explorer style. However, they are adequate for what is probably in most 48-states mountaineers because they deal with heat and humidity better than a round/totally sealing pair. With the shields removed they make great running/biking/hiking glasses. I will say the only configuration these should be stocked in, and the one you want, is the Chameleon lens style. Spectron 4 is okay, but the real attraction to Julbo is that their polarized AND photochromatic lenses are absolutely phenomenal for all day, sun/cloud mix conditions. After my first pair of Sports oriented eyewear with those features I will never go back. With the caveat against multi-day high altitude mountaineering (Denali, Himalayas, South America etc these may not be the safest or most protective choice), I would definitely recommend these glasses.
Awesome mountaineering glasses
There's good reason why you see so many people in the mountaineering and touring communities wearing various Julbo sunglasses - they're exceptional. I went with the Shields 2-4 reactiv lenses (vs cat4 only), they work fantastically and you never notice the reactiv adjustment. I like the scale down to cat2 for clouds/shade so I don't feel the need to remove and keep protecting my eyeballs. Great side coverage with removable shields, stay in place and don't fall off. Only piece of advice is if these are your primary backcountry drivers, it's worth buying an extra set of side-shields ($7) from Julbo's spare parts. Also check your measurements, if you have a small head these 130mm will run a little big but Julbo makes 120mm
My new go-to for anything outdoors!
I just used a pair of these with the Reactiv (aka Chameleon) lenses for an 8-day backpacking excursion to the High Sierra, and I can honestly say that they’re the best sunglasses I’ve ever used. They adapt to changing light conditions and cut glare due to polarization. The removable soft side shields kept out wind, bugs, particles, and glare from peripheral sun or reflections off of snow and rock. They stays on even without the included loop. My eyes stayed happier and more comfortable than ever for the entire trip! I plan to use for all future mountaineering, backpacking, mountain biking, hiking, and trail running.
Good multipurpose shades
I have used them running and hiking in winter and summer conditions. The fit is great and I never had to be bothered by the glasses sliding down while wearing them. Sometimes when sweating the glasses will fog up. The glasses are tight fitting, which is good for blocking out reflected light, but I believe if there was more of a gap there would be less issues with the lenses fogging up. Overall I’m very happy with them.
Really good sunglasses
My Native sunglasses, that I have been using for years, were gradually dying, and the model I liked is no longer available, and I decided to get some high-end sunglasses. I looked at the sunglasses on offer at rei.com, with a first cut of looking at the most expensive as a surrogate for quality. The Maui Jim sunglasses were expensive, but many of the positive reviews were very similar sort of cookie-cutter reviews, and some reviews said "Ignore those negative reviews! Ignore that man behind the curtain!" which made me suspicious, albeit maybe they were genuine. So I looked at the Julbo sunglasses, especially at the polarized/photochromic lens ones. I was impressed by the features of these lenses, so got a pair. They are the best sunglasses I've ever had. I can use them in the car to drive, I can use them crossing a snowfield in bright sun. They don't get quite as dark as real glacier glasses, but dark enough. I did replace their retainer with a longer adjustable strap, so that I can (a) snug them up against my face to keep light from leaking around the side guards, but also (b) have them hand comfortably around my neck. I also found that the narrowness of the parts above my ears a bit painful, so I put some 1/4" heat-shrink tube on them right there, and now they're comfortable. Highly recommended.
Excellent in bright, sunny conditions
I bought these for outdoor activities on bright, sunny days with occasional clouds. They cover the field of vision very well even without the side guards, feel very light on your face, and cut glare and fatiguing brightness. They respond to prolonged cloud cover so you don't feel like you're walking in a dark room. The yellow-orange tinge you see while looking through them is pleasant and not too distorting of natural colors. On the label they are not recommended for use while driving, and I haven't tried them while driving, but I don't think it would be a problem driving with them on full-sun days. I wouldn't use these for driving on solid cloudy days. On heavy clouded days, and while hiking under a solid canopy of thick trees on the Appalachian Trail I used Julbo Zebra sunglasses that had a much lower variable light blocking level and those were much better than this model under those circumstances. These are pricey, but used in the circumstances I've described they are wonderful.
Blizzard and glacier proof!
Perfect for a Kilimanjaro blizzard. It blizzarded during my summit and I was 6 months post LASIK, so I was nervous that I'd either freeze my eyeballs off, have snow blindness, or just hate my life. I felt SO protected with these bad boys. If you get migraines from light sensitivity, or are going to be in a situation with intense light or conditions, these are great.
Not Bombproof
The rubber piece that comprises the ear pieces is not sealed effectively to the plastic. So in my case the rubber became detached, where the rubber just hangs off. Obviously not usable or acceptable to have a separated ear piece.
awesome
bought these to replace my 20 dollar cheapos, so I can’t comment on how they relate to other high end glasses. But they have been amazing for me!! I no longer get headaches or migraines due to the bright summer sun at altitude, and they fit great — super close to my face. I love them!!
