I have owned Whisperlites, Jetboils and Pocket Rockets. Each one had failed on me one way or another. So I thought I would give this alcohol stove a try since it has fewer moving parts. It has not disappointed me! I love bringing two small Nalgene bottles for fuel and always knowing how much fuel I have. Though the alcohol stove is no good in a burn ban you do have a tablet option. It's not as fast as other stoves but I generally have plenty of time when I am out camping. I love the pan that doubles as a lid and it seems to be pretty easy to clean and haven't had any issues with food getting stuck to it. Though I will say I find it challenging to light with a traditional lighter. Other than that I can say that this stove is hands down worth the buy and love not having to deal with those fuel canisters!
I bought this set and discovered everything I thought I knew about denatured alcohol camp stoves was wrong. Silly me. Back in the day I, like most people, jumped on the white gas stove bandwagon. Alcohol stoves were looked down on as being old fashioned and such. Now, in my old age, I'm appreciating the reduced volatility of alcohol (don't need a special metal canister/bottle, not afraid of an accidental spill setting me on fire), the greener aspect (the brand alcohol I use is made from 95% renewable sources) light weight, and dead simple! Measure fuel, pour, light, cook. No pumping is quite a bonus. Silent operation. NO more gas station smell! Boiling water in 6 minutes or so. Makes me feel like I was missing out on something all those years. Now I'm saving up for a Trangia set.
altitude: sea level; ambient temp: 77 degrees F. No wind. This was a faster than expected cook! It's light too! I like it a lot. brought many, many traditional covers before, had a lot of trouble estimating how much fuel I had in those pricy, heavy canisters. I suspect however when it's super cold, lotsa altitude, or windy, there may be a problem with the stove. Only gripe: the "handled" extinguisher lid has a small hole made by the mango., and the fire can quickly get away from you,. thus, the flame does not immediately go out. I bought some Esbit cubes; they are pricey and smell weird. I keep them tightly enclosed to avoid gnarly smell. Cooker "blooms" super fast; use de-natured alcohol for fuel to avoid soot. The cooker has a nifty sealed lid, so when it cools, you can tightly screw on the lid and then save your fuel. Suggest you practice several times lighting it then deciding what to cook. And you can cook on the thing not just boil water..... I did; do can you.
Unlike the other reviewer, I try not to pack an aluminum pot in a crush zone... It is a sturdy, well built set of pots/stand and I can't imagine crushing it anyway. Purchased to get a basic water boil kit to get my girlfriend started into backpacking. We take a few freeze dried meal for our dinners/breakfasr and this simple kit works great. It is a little wind sensitive, so a windscreen is needed for optimum efficiency. Testing I can get a full 800ml to boil within 9 minutes. I've never needed that much, but it can do it. The pan/lid is a nice touch, as I can fry up some sausages easily as a treat one morning with a full burner! I have had zero issues using the brass burner, and the simmer control works well but I have not had a use for it. Even the solid fuel works well as a back up for me, albeit slower than the denatured alcohol i normally use.
The set is amazing as far as quality, I would suggest using aluminum foil, so there is no clean up. The only bad thing I have found, was while frying a couple eggs in the small pan, the flames came through the vent holes and caught the rubber on the handle on fire. It was a simple fix by cutting 3/4 of the rubber grip off and sliding to even it up again. I would suggest doing this as soon as you get the set, so it doesn't happen to you. The large pan probably will never have this issue, bc the handle is further from exposed flame. I would still recommend, and am thinking of purchasing another. The whole set fits into itself, along with a lighter and thin dishtowel, and coleman small salt and pepper shaker, about the size of a tic tac container. I am thinking about making individual dawn soap with my food saver to pack in there as well. I carry a plastic fork and knife on the outside inside the mesh carrybag. Great for one or 2 people when camping
One of the things I really like about this cook set is that all the components are made to be used together. Often you get a stove, a pot holder and the cook set separately and they are top heavy or the pots are too narrow to stay on top of the holder properly. This kit eliminates that, the pots are made to fit nicely into the top of the holder. All that is missing is a windscreen but you can probably rig foil or something that will work with the less aggressive heat sources this kit uses. The whole thing weighs less than a pound and you can leave the heat tab holder (or alcohol burner) behind for even more weight savings. If you remove the (screw on) plastic feet or replace them with metal ones, you could burn twigs. The entire kit is compact and fits inside two mesh bags. There is room enough inside (the pots) to stow small cooking related items or even an alcohol bottle if you can find one the right shape. The large pot has a spout, with the smaller pot on top you can pour excess water from pasta without spilling it. About 20 oz/600 ML of water is enough for mac and cheese with little excess afterwards. I'm able to get a CSI/Walmart style stainless cup into mine (loosely) the bag holds it together. Due to the 'squared off' bottom that allows the pots to nestle in the holder, cleaning them is a little more difficult than with smooth pots. Stuff gets caught in the bend but its not enough hassle to outweigh the benefits of the design. Overall I'm happy with my purchase and wish I'd seen it long before..
Thank you REI/Esbit for a decade's worth of backcountry cooking. This is the go-to backpacking stove for my daughter and I. We backpack 4 seasons in the North East, and although slower in single-digit temps it still is a great little cooker. For us simplicity is key. No fiddly bits. Ultra reliable. Mind you it needs a flat surface (a tad top heavy) and benefits from a windscreen.
Compact, light, durable and options for fuel tabs or gas. The size of the pots are perfect and I was easily able to cook for two for 3 days with just this set. They also cleaned up really easily, and I was able to scrub them pretty hard without scratching or damaging them. I have a feeling this will last me many years to come
I took this set on a backpacking trip to the East Coast. I had to take a flight, and placed it in my multi-day pack as I have done with countless other cooking sets. During transport it was smashed beyond future use unless I hammered it back out. I have never had this problem with other cooking sets. When Esbit was contacted for a resolution, they stated that they would not cover the product and that I should contact the airline. Poor customer service to say the least. I'm sure it was a manufacturing defect with a certain lot, but they didn't provide ANY resolution, and didn't take responsibility for their product. If you intend to not treat this product gingerly, don't purchase it until they figure out any manufacturing defects.
I tried to use this and it was a complete fail. I've never used an alcohol stove before and after wasting my time trying to use this one have not since so some of these issues may be with the alcohol stove instead of the actual set. Either way this really struggled to boil water over an hour plus on multiple occasions which really sucks when its getting dark and you are waiting to eat. Beyond the slow burn/delicate boiling point the set up of this kit also left a lot to be desired. For one, with such a small margin for error the open style frame let every whisper of wind hit the flames, displacing the heat slowing things down even further if the flame didn’t blow out entirely. Additionally the alcohol holder piece didn’t make sense to me and was hard to use. Essentially you store the fuel in this tiny shiny cup, you have to remove the top so it can breathe (and spill) then you have to plot it down inside this holder which has no room for your fingers and no insertion point on the outside. This means you have to literally drop it down and hope not to spill or tip it over. If you successfully do all of that then you have to reach down into this open frame and light the cup while the holder lets wind whistle through, you hope your fingers don’t have any fuel on them, and you are likely using a tiny bic lighter, its like trying to light a candle using a small lighter but harder and more dangerous. My fuel burned super dark so the whole thing got covered in a black soot which rubbed off on anything it touched. The pot was fine but the whole stove set up didn’t work and seemed to be designed more for looks than for function. I returned this item and would not recommend. 1 star
