Great cable - lousy cable locking end
The plastic covered cable is fantastic. The cable end that goes into the lock was nearly rusted permanently into the lock after securing my kayak under my deck over the winter. I just pulled it out to check it and I thought I was going to have to cut the cable to get it off. I was able to use a tool to finally get it out. Don't use this cable lock in damp areas!
This lock works for me.
This lock works for me. I can change the 3-digit combination. I can lock and release the cable. And the cable is quite sturdy. Of course, it will not stand up to heavy duty cable cutters. But this is more to deter casual theft than to prevent heavy duty intent to destroy and steal. I can understand why some people have difficulty pushing the lock lever full to the lock position. People with very weak fingers or severe arthritis should avoid this product. It does take a little strength to push the lever to lock position. Although I had a little old woman with arthritis try it out and she locked the lever with no problem...
Easy To Use, But Not Durable
I loved using this lock because I could just loop it around my crossbars and slip it through the rudder channel in my kayak to lock it to my roof. I could also lock it to any dock because of the design of the lock. However, it did not hold up to salt water one bit. I only had the lock for a couple months before the locking lever seized and would not disengage the internal locking mechanism. I ended up accidentally breaking the lever completely off, therefore officially breaking the lock. If the locking mechanism and tumbler assembly were built more robust and weather proof, it'd be an outstanding kayak lock.
Been using several of these for over 2 years
This is not a heavy duty lock. But they are almost perfect for when I use them for. I have several of these that I use to lock about 15 kayaks at a dock. What makes them excellent is that they easily slide through small holes in order to secure the kayaks. My complaint is that they do tend to freeze, corrode and jam. Lubricant and grease will break them free. If you use these – especially outside – I recommend using lubricant and grease on them on a regular basis so they do not corrode and jam.
Not for outdoor use
While this lock initially seemed nice, and was easy to use, I would not recommend it for prolonged outdoor use. I purchased this lock to use to secure my kayak to it's storage rack. After only a few months in the elements it had rusted shut and I had to cut the wire to remove it. It you are planning to use outdoor, find something more specifically designed for outdoor use.
mechanism failed when resetting combo
I reset the combo, turned the screw back to its normal position, and now it's almost impossible to use at all. The mechanism feels so cheaply engineered and breakable, it's like a toy and unsatisfying to manipulate. Moreover, I am worried it will get stuck when I want to unlock it so I can use my SUP. The screwhead you turn to change the combo is soft and easily stripped. Glad REI has a good return policy.
Great adjustable cable lock
I bought two of these a couple years ago to use to help lock up my coolers while camping. Like them a lot. Now I use them for my kayak and also my bike. They're nice and lightweight. People are mentioning issues with the locks and the dials not turning - you have to make sure that the latch is all the way in the lock position to live the dials. I just purchased two more this year because I've been so satisfied
not worth the packaging
if someone try's to give you one of these for free don't take it. I had planed on using on a cross country bike tour the long cable would weave through my bags and bike at camp grounds with a lot of activity the first time I used it it wouldn't unlock I tried to force the switch/button and it snapped off I ended up cutting the cable with some cutters I use for cutting plastic zip ties.
Loved at first. Now rusted shut - unable to open.
I loved this when first purchased. Lightweight. Easy to get on and off. But...after securing my kayaks, in a carport in RI for the winter, it is rusted together - unable to get it open, reset button does not move. WD-40 did not do anything. My only option is to cut the cable. Called NRS and they said - sorry, guess you'll have to cut it.
not for saltwater environment
Used this lock exactly ONE time. left it in the hatch of my sea kayak overnight. Next day it was rusted and seized. If my boat was locked up, I would have had to "steal" my own boat by cutting it. Cheap, flimsy item. Maybe OK for light, brief security in town or fresh water environment.
