Excellent Liner--Perfect Protection Under Shorts
Perfect pad for recreational cycling on any bike seat or travel rental bike. I have been cycling for more than 30 years and have used all kinds of padded bike pants and liners on all kinds of bikes. I think PEARL IZUMI gave this Liner a great deal of thought. Unlike their bibs and bike pants which I have not liked for years--the pad in this Liner is large and covers the sit bones very well. It does feel like you have a diaper on when walking around, but men need that level of protection on a bike. You don't feel that bulk when you are on the bike seat. This liner also provides the lifting support men need in the front to prevent injury. They incorporated the strong lightweight “sheer” material used on woman’s yoga pants to make this liner Very breathable. I wore it for 45 miles in 85-90 degree sunny weather on one ride and no moisture or perspiration built up on the pad or my skin. That is simply amazing. Never have seen that before. They paid careful attention to the waist band and made sure that it supports but does not pinch uncomfortably above the pelvic bone. I use a liner to jump on rental bikes while traveling and most of the time with rentals the seat is mediocre to poor—this liner will give you the protection you need to feel good for at least 30 to 40 miles. It’s extremely lightweight and thin and is comfortable on. It has 2 hooks on the side to help pull it up, but you won’t need that probably. I wear it under my Patagonia shorts. You can use any shorts—it should fit under them all. Now my pro-tip for wearing bike pants and liners that professional cyclists know is that you either don’t wear anything under them or you wear an athletic thong for men if that is not comfortable. You need your sit-bones to rest right on the liner blue pad with no material in between otherwise it builds up moisture and you get a rash or blister. REI does not sell a thong for men. The leading one most athletes/cyclists use has been made by Jockey for more than 20 years so you would need to get it online there if needed. I always use a thong for athletics, especially bike pants and it works great. Some men and mainly women will not wear anything under it when they have a soft liner like this one. Get this liner if you are uncomfortable on your bike seat—this is a good one. Real World Fit: I am a 34 waist in all my pants always and in this Liner Large (L) fits me well. I tried on Medium in the store and it was too tight.
Edge of padding causes sores
I bought this because of the reviews and because I have other good quality Pearl Izumi products. However, these liners have a poor design since padding is not 100% integrated or sewed from the limit of the edges creating a small flap when and when moving around the saddle (mountain biking), provoking sores. Therefore, I cannot recommend this model of Pearl Izumi... I hope the other models have a better design. Sorry Pearl Izumi, I wanted to like you but didn't work.
How the mighty have fallen
I avoided buying the Quest shorts because of declining reviews in recent months due to poor-quality padding, but looks like these have been hit with the same cost-cutting affliction. No contoured seam or sculpting here, just a huge piece of constant-thickness foam with a super cheap zigzag seam. This seam allows the edge of the foam to lift and chafe against my inner thighs when off the saddle, since the lack of sculpting keeps the padding from folding properly around body contours. These are going back to REI posthaste - not worth even half their price. There really ought to be an image of the padding on any pair of bike shorts retailing online. Had I seen these in person, I never would have bought them in the first place. Too bad - always thought PI was a good brand until now.
Better than the previous version
I was disappointed when PI discontinued their previous MTB liner shorts, and replaced them with this more expensive iteration. But after having tried them, I will gladly pay the higher price because these are a superior product. At first, I thought the padding was too bulky compared to the previous generation. But once I started riding, it seems these became less noticeable than the previous version. And the softer material makes it much easier to hand wash in the sink .
Love these
I went on a 76 mile bike ride wearing the liner shorts. I am 62 years old, 5'8 tall, weigh 152 lb. I ride a steel road bike with a Brooks B-17 saddle. I ride with my hands on the brake hoods, and like to spin on the flats, & spin up & down hills. When the asphalt gets rough, I'll shift up a gear or two and pedal out of the saddle. My average speed is about 15 mph and if I feel really good I can kick it up to 17 miles per hour for half an hour. I wore these padded liner shorts alone, under the impression that the mesh fabric of some panels would keep me cooler than normal cycling shorts. Mission accomplished. I often wear a button down shirt (not tucked in) when riding. I will always do that while wearing these shorts, to keep people from seeing a guy part of me through that mesh (I do have *some* modesty). Some bike jerseys may not be long enough to do that job. .. I was comfortable to the last mile in these liner shorts. They were easy on my underside and the stitching at the edges of the padding didn't rub on my bun skin
good liner shorts
These are my first and only pair of padded liner shorts and they work as expected. Keep me from getting sore on long trail rides. They aren’t bulky or annoying. I forget that I have them on most of the time. Pro: comfortable and protective Cons: they run slightly small (I’m always a medium when I wear boxers and compression shorts and these are a little tight but still wearable)
Not the same item as in the images
The shorts are not the same as the ones in the images. I thought I’d have a pocket by the thigh, but I do not. The texture is also different. However, the pad adds some nice support while on the seat, even if it does feel like a bunched diaper off of it.
Great for long mountain bike rides (3+ hours)
Bought these to compare with the Zoic premium bike short liners that I currently own. I have to admit that these feel better on the longer rides. Both are good liners for 2 hour rides, but the Pearl select liner feels better.
PI quality has gone down....way down.
Pearl Izumi quality has definitely gone down over the years. I've been noticing that for a few years now and this is just another piece of evidence to support that view. PI used to be at the top of the charts for brand quality. They used to sit where I'd say Rapha sits now. PI used to be a premium brand, now they seem much more of a budget brand. These are not a bad pair of shorts, but the chamois is just pathetic. It's basically a giant foam pad, with no design or channels to help blood flow. It's like wearing a thin diaper. The rest of the short ventilates well and is comfortable, but the chamois is hard to get over. I got these at half-price, so I can't complain too much. But even at half-price, I feel like I paid the full value. If they weren't on sale, I would have returned them. They will suffice for indoor training session on Zwift, but they won't see any rotation in my long MTB or road rides.
Chamois cut too wide in the front
These are well made, but the chamois is cut too wide in the front. It's almost as wide as the back of the liner. This causes some discomfort (for me) on longer rides. I tried them on 3 rides. The wide front padding rubs on the side of the legs. The chamois is not cut the way my 2 other bike short brands are cut in the front.
