Tested in windy conditions and it worked perfectly. I love the modular design and the option to nest different cook options depending on my activity. Plan to use the 1.0 pot with my MTB sessions.
I purchased the 1.8L System over the 1L system as this system allows for a remote fuel canister and a lower center of gravity. I purchased the compatible 1L Windburner accessory pot, and 1L coffee press. I plan on predominately utilizing the 1L pot with the remote fuel system. Pros: Rapid Boil Easy storage Relatively Lightweight Cons The bowl on the bottom was not manufactured to slight into the 'snap-n-secure ring' on the bottom of the windburner stove. The bowl will fall off if not stowed with something against the bottom. This is an unfortunate oversight that is an easy fix on the manufacturing side. Overall: Happy with purchase. Would happily purchase 1 L with remote fuel system, however that was not an option. Other than that no cons for my intended use of backpacking, camping (3-7 nights), and car camping. I would not recommended for thru-hiking.
I bought this stove because my 2 boys, 9 and 11 love to run around swinging sticks, throwing rocks, and wrestling with each other while the stove is running. Instead of being worried that they’d knock over a tall vertical stove and set the forest ablaze, I wanted something super stable, large enough to boil all of our water at once, light enough for me to carry, and fast enough for their zero level of patience. The wind burner is so fast my kids don’t even have time to whine about how hangry they are while staring at a pot of water waiting for it to boil. I also love that the flame is fully covered and this is windproof! It packs great and is truly a dream for backpacking with the kids.
I posted that this stove just quit working after six uses. I did end up sending the unit back to msr. The reason for failure was the “thermal trip sensor” was activated as a safety feature to shut the fuel off to the jet in the event of overheating. Don’t know why the stove would have overheated under my conditions. Regardless, the only way to reset the thermal trip feature is to send it back to msr! In no way is this field serviceable. That should make this stove a “non-starter” for anyone considering taking this in the backcountry without a reliable back-up stove. The regular upright windburner stove thermal trip is able to be reset by inserting the leg of its plastic stand/support and twisting a valve. I couldn’t tell you why the windburner duo doesn’t share the same feature. I promptly returned the stove and am looking at other options.
Great stove. Moved to the MSR WindBurner Duo system after I continued to struggle with my previous stove (Jetboil). I like that the fuel can is removed. My favorite features: 1) Cup doesn't 'lock' to burner like JetBoil. It just makes it easier to remove. I'll admit I originally was skeptical...but its actually okay 2) Size is nice for 2 people 3) French Press accessory works well 4) Valve adjustment is not under the burner! 5) Everything packs nicely within the cup (burner, fuel can, French Press (not included) with room to spare 6) Insolation around cup doesn't retain moisture so if it gets rained on it drys off relatively quickly 7) No ignitor to have false hope in...just don't forget a lighter 8) JetBoil pot support fits on the rim of the burner! no problem Negatives: 1) A little heavier and bulkier than I expected 2) Seems like there are a lot of parts, so hopefully nothing comes apart or breaks
The stove is fantastic. Definitely immune to wind, and because it doesn't really have a flame it is also safer. We had multiple Scouts try this unit out and it performed admirably. Water boil time was especially amazing - 1.8L in less than 5 mins. The only gripe I have is that I can't use my titanium cookware with it. The burner only accepts Windburner pots and pans. It would be nice if MSR had an attachment to the stove that allowed for the use of non-Windburner cookware.
I bought this stove last year and have used it on several backpacking trips. My original stove is a Whisperlite, it has served my well since 1987. I wanted to switch to the compressed gas cartridge so I tried the Pocket Rocket, it was too tall, unstable and poor wind performance. I decided to try the Windburner Duo System. I like that the fuel canister is off to the side. The pot is big enough for the wife and my needs. It is very stable and performs great even in high wind. Most impressive is the speed in which it boils water, I don’t do any simmering so I can’t comment on that. The stove packs up nicely including storage of the fuel canister. This makes it a little bulky but not a major issue. I would buy this stove again.
Perfect size for 2 person climbing system or a luxurious sea kayaking setup for 1-2 people. Much more stable for bigger pots and use of the frying pan. Also nice to accommodate a larger fuel canister in the pot. I regularly make Quesadillas and sautay veggies and sausage with this system or fit a few boil in the bags in the pot.
I’ve used it about 6 times. Just as the other 1 star review, the stove just quit mid use. Msr brand fuel canister that had 80% fuel left. I took it home and tried several other canister s, the stove will not feed gas to the burner. If I was on a back pack trip I would have been super freeking p-ssed off. I’m sending this back to msr. I have lost confidence in this stove however. My Jetboil sol has been faithfully working for years. I think I will take this into the backcountry instead of this msr windburner.
This stove truly lives up to its name. I recently took it along with me on a 3,000 mile road trip through Utah and Arizona where it performed beautifully day in and day out. Whether it was a quick boil of some water (and it really was quick, the heat dispersement system on the bottom of the 1.8L accessory pot usefully spreads the heat around the full base, and not just the bottom) for morning coffee or getting scrambled eggs to their desired consistency with the easily adjustable burner. The highlight of the stove during the trip was at 7000' feet in a very, very windy night in Capitol Reef. Simmering some noodles for spaghetti at night and coffee and hot cereal in the morning was absolutely no issue with the WindBurner. Not to mention the new satellite base keeps the height lower and more stable in unstable conditions. This stove system is incredibly versatile from sea level to 7000'+ and in incredibly windy conditions. The WindBurner pot and skillet are a great addition to this system, especially for car camping where space isn't an issue.
