Overall the cook set has worked very well. Like many others I removed the silicone ring to prevent it melting off however I put it in the dishwasher and it completely ruined the coating on the pot. The pot is not labeled not dishwasher safe. The MSR website (with a bit of digging) recommends hand washing but doesn’t say not to put it in the dishwasher.
I would love this cook set and highly recommend it if this problem was fixed. As the water nears a boil, the heat causes the silicone gripper to expand slightly and slide down the pot. It then gets caught on the top of the stove, right where the heat is wrapping around the bottom of the pot and catches the gripper on fire. I have two duo set and this has happened on both. This is a shame because otherwise this product would be great. It fits a fuel can, stove, and handle in it nicely making a wonderfully compact and light weight backpacking kitchen.
I bought 2 of these for my twin boys to use backpacking. While on a training hike for an 80 mile trip later in the year they used them for the first time. While using it to boil water for a dehydrated meal the pot warmed up and the silicone insulator loosened and slid down. It slid down onto the stove that was being used and lit on fire. As my son was trying to turn off the stove to prevent further problems the silicone burnt his fingers. Bottom line it is a flawed design and a Safety Hazard. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
I got this on sale to start off so I can't be too mad. I must say for this price point aluminum being the material used is less than what you get with titanium competitors. The lid has holes that I can't see the use besides letting out all the heat so I feel my water takes longer to boil. The lil tongs are kind of gimmicky since you could easily do without instead put a handle or something since you aren't saving much weight and it's one more loose piece rattling around. Last grievance is I stored my tank inside as advertised and with the condensation it left a rust ring around the bottom...not ideal.
It is easy to use. More than big enough for doing a meal for two people. Easily fits the gas canister and a few extra items inside it as well. Very happy with the set and I would buy it again.
Great pot, was able to feed my husband and I while we did the Appalachian Trail. The lil rubber bit eventually starts falling off when the pot gets hot, but ya know its a great way to letyou know the water is boiling without taking the lid off. :) Because this was part of our thru-hike setup, I'm emotionally attached to it so I may be biased in my 5/5 start review. But works real good for 2 people. Does the pot job. 👍🏻 Also the mesh bag fell apart but it last TWO THOUSAND MILES so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm hoping to find a replacement bag cause I'm never getting rid of this pot.
Great pot, just right for one or two when heating water for dehydrated meals or making pasta. Super compact and fits a 227g msr canister upside down inside, along with all the little accessories (handle, igniter and backup lighter, msr pocket rocket) Has a 500ml and a 1l mark on the inside which is useful. I use it for hiking and bike packing. For anyone interested or for the coffee lovers out there, I have tried forever to find a coffee press that fits inside this pot as I love proper coffee. None of the MSR ones for other stoves fit and I didn’t want to have to switch out the whole cooking system to get a Windburner/jetboil just for the press. I can happily confirm that the Jetboil Silicone Grande Coffee Press fits perfectly!
The minimum you need for two people in the backcountry, and nothing more. Very light, and everything nests inside. I have an old Pocket Rocket stove that nests inside with a 110g (small) gas canister. If you have the newer Pocket Rocket, it will nest inside with a 220g (large) gas canister.
In addition to my previous review below, I can say that I think the person suggesting the Windburner coffee press is meant to be reviewing the Solo set because I bought the press and it definitely does not fit the duo. It is also very easy to not burn the plastic bowl on the bottom, I’m not entirely sure how people are doing it. I’ve also never had a problem with the rubber ring slipping down, I’ve been using the pot regularly for the last 3 years.
Would have been 5 stars, however, the rubber ring around the actual pot is redundant as will instantly slip and fall down to the burner once you start heating things up, almost causing a fire hazard / melty rubber if you're not quick to remove things... Pretty sure this could be easily resolved with a design tweak to the pot, like a lip extrusion/bump on the pot at the bottom of the ring to stop it falling down, but alas, is not to be.
