For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

I was very excited about these hikers. They fit well, were light but substantial and had a good tread. Perfect for scouting Big Horn sheep. After three days and 26 miles I had to accept defeat. I had developed IT band friction syndrome. After PT, an injection, and couple months off, I was healed. So I tried them again while pheasant hunting. Within a couple of miles, the pain started back. There is something about these shoes that just didn't work for me. I'm not sure if the sole is too stiff, or what. I do know that I've never experienced this in all the decades of hiking I've done. That said, they may work well for you.
I have had these shoes for almost a year now and have truly loved them! I wore them daily (immediately after buying them) for 3 months traveling in Italy, often 10-12 hours at a time, and my feet never got sore. They went from city to mountain and out to dinner. They are water proof, stable on steep, slippery and uneven surfaces. They never felt clunky or heavy. After a year of heavy use, the upper part is still in great shape. The soles are starting to wear down now, but like I said I have gotten a load of use out of these and feel they were really worth their price. I hope they still make this very model when I need my next pair.
I chose these over other shoes I tried because of its beefy traction. In the past I’ve slipped and gotten injured on steep loose rocks/dirt and have been uneasy ever since when on sketchy terrain, which is all the time around here (Western WA). In the past 10 days since I bought them, I’ve day-hiked 20 miles and backpacked another 18 miles in PNW roots, boulders, creek crossings, loose dirt and rocks and everything in berween. The traction is awesome and I’m over my fears of slipping and sliding and getting injured again. Note: After my first hike (10 miles) I found that about a half-inch portion of the outermost sole at the heel had peeled away from the shoe, but because I really loved the shoes I just repaired with super-glue. After 27 more miles, I see a little more of the same problem. I’ll repair this as well and hope there are no more problems because otherwise they are excellent.
Overall pretty comfortable and fairly durable. I've ultimately purchased 3 pairs of these for fieldwork and have used them for 1.5 years. The cons of these shoes are that the tread grip is not actually great. I work across wet and dry terrain and in scamble-y places and I don't trust my feet with these shoe as much as I have with others (e.g., 5.10s). Also the laces break near the top hole pretty consistently throughout the year. I've never had to replace shoelaces as frequently as I have for these shoes.. so have backup laces ready. Overall they're just fine, but I think I'll explore other, grippier options for my next pair.
I used these for a long backpacking trip. After the first week and a half or so (way less than the 300 miles I was told they were supposed to last), they were already falling apart. Both of the seams along the inside of each shoe had split all the way open. The soles were separating on both heels So nothing was waterproof anymore. The shoes are comfortable and have a nice grippy tread. However, you can find both of those things in a less expensive, more durable shoe. Normally I am a big fan of La Sportiva, but not these!
I’ve worn high top hiking boots for over 30 years and thought I would take the plunge and try a sneaker style shoe. Without breaking them in my first hike was 4 miles with some elevation and multiple rock hoping stream crossings. Not only did they feel like a favorite pair of well worn boots but my feet stayed so dry that I gave a little thought to stepping in water. Yes they are a bit pricey but foot comfort and dryness are well worth the price. My foot is average to wide with a high instep and the Sizing was compatible with every day shoes that I would wear.
I saw these in an REI store in their “garage sale” section. I picked them up and they are awesome on the trails. I’ve hiked 35 miles or so with a 25 lbs pack on with these shoes. They grip the ground extremely well on steep ups and downs. I came on here to write a review and discovered that these are women’s shoes. Haha. I’m a man. I have the grey and lime green version. Works for me. I’m glad that I found these.
I liked the shoes except they are too wide for my foot, which is quite narrow. I could not lace them up tight enough to stop my foot from slipping around inside and heel from sliding out which is not ok on uneven surfaces. Good sole grip though. Hiked in 25 degrees and foot was warm but didn't get chance to test out waterproofing. Nice toe protection which I miss on my Bushidos. Sole is much stiffer than the Bushido trail runners and twice the heel to two drop. I'm going to try the Kaptivas GTX instead as they appear to have a more snug fit. I have narrow feet with an average arch. I found on a chart on Sportiva's website that show these as a wide fit. Have a fairly neutral footbed.
I love these shoes. Love, love, love them. The footbed is perfectly shaped, cradling my foot comfortably and providing support and stability for hiking tricky terrain, even without a high ankle. I like the relatively stiff sole and firm upper. When the shoes are tightly laced they protect against slipping forward on steep downhills, which will save your toes. Just be sure to size up so you have enough room in the toe box.
I tried these shoes on difficult natural trials with boulders, big rocks and gravel. Great out sole grip, very comfortable and well cushioned, I didn't feel the trail. I only had to be careful on gravel because out sole felt a little too high, making me fear to twist an ankle. Nonetheless, I was confident in my strides. This pair is a keeper.
