A sturdy family camping tent
Received free product
This is a roomy tent for family camping that is easy to set up, and constructed of sturdy materials. The tent floor is thicker than a lot of other tents, and might make a footprint or tarp unnecessary in most developed campsites. The sheer fabric and mesh also seem very durable. Expect many years of fun and adventure with this tent. The vents at the top of the rain fly are a nice feature that should make hot/humid weather easier to handle (so far we've only used it in SoCal "winter" weather). It definitely needs to be guyed-out completely if strong winds are a concern. The number of provided stakes won't cover all the guy-out points when pitching in an open space away from trees. Packing everything up in the stuff sack is easy, and the overall weight is very manageable for a large-size tent.

Height, weight, floor are great
I wanted my husband (who hates camping after military service) to camp with me in my later years of life. The tent needed to be tall enough for a 6’ 1” male to comfortably move around. Since I would be packing the equipment and I have arthritis, I needed a lightweight tent compared to my 62 pound old tent. I wanted a tent floor that easily compressed. I needed shelter from the cold wind and rain. The Grand Hut 4 served all those purposes. So what’s the problem? There are 4 spokes like a wagon wheel at the top where the pieces go together. They are difficult for weak hands to put together and pull apart. The other pieces look complicated but were very easy to slide into place. The inner tent goes up exceedingly fast. The rain cover goes to the ground which I like. On a wet day the rain cover can go on first but it would be a tight squeeze to hook the loops onto the frame. The fine mesh began to snag immediately but did not tear. The fine mesh kept out most bugs but a few managed to sneak inside the tent. In mild weather the tent was perfect. There parenpockets at the bottom of the tent to store stuff but at the top of the tent there are almost invisible loops to hange a few items. If you store stuff at the top - you will lose headroom. We fit 2 almost twin sized sleeping pads inside. If you read other reviews you will see that you absolutely must purchase more tent stakes to properly guy out this tent. In calm wind you won’t notice but after 2 nights of winds I can witness this tent will blow away if it is not guyed out because the rain cover acts as a parachute. The Grand Hut 4 is like an oven when the outside temperature nears 80 degrees even with a breeze. I could feel the sun burning through the rain cover. The sad part is the outside rainfly is only staked on one side. The other side must be rolled open or flap in the breeze. A stake loop at the bottom of both sides of the outside door would allow better breeze control. On summer nights this would be a great tent without the fly because the mesh allows star watching. The rainfly will allow water splashes from under the fly. There is not enough UV protection. It’s a great tent for 70 degree weather. I am still researching tents and so far have purchased 3 from REI trying to find a good fit. On a very windy night on a Texas hillside, the Grand Hut squeezed all night long. The Grand Hut 4 is a noisy tent when the rainfly brushes against the inner tent in windy weather. In a heavy mist, water like rain formed outside the tent but did not leak inside because I staked out every loop to pull the rainfly away from the inner tent. Opening the tent door on the rainfly from the inside is quite awkward. The rainfly door flies backward into the mesh tent at the bottom which throws water back into the inner tent. The Grand Hut 4 stuffed completely back into its stuff sack. Put the inner tent in last so the poles don’t tear the mesh. If the campsite had shade, the tent would have been fine. I purchased the orange version and it lights up like the sun on the inside. On the one hand the orange keeps the inside from being a black hole. On the other hand the tent lights up as soon as the sun rises making sleeping later difficult. If you need lighter weight, height, and a smaller packed size - this may be the tent you are seeking. A tiny ant and another skinny bug made it inside the tent. Lots of bugs crawled around the outside mesh of the tent. I recommend spraying the tent with bug spray if you prefer to keep the bugs out. I was able to sent up this tent alone but it helps to have two people because the poles that fit into the spokes at the top are a challenge to take apart. For one person this tent is large and spacious. If you have kids inside then I recommend adding protection for the floor. I needed this tent to pack into a Toyota Prius and it did. I hope you found this review helpful.

Easy set-up, perfect for car camping

Purchased this tent for summer camping season. Lots of headroom and set-up was a breeze. First time took under 30 minutes for shell and fly. Only reason i did not give this tent 5 stars is the fact that there were some small defects in the mesh areas. REI provided a cheap repair kit due to the item being out of stock. In my opinion a reputable company shouls never prove a defective product new in the box.

Perfect tent

I love this tent! It works awesome for two people and is probably roomie enough for three! It is quick and easy to set up with a partner, we can do it in under 8 minutes! It is compact enough to throw in the car and is great for 1 night or multiple week trips. Has held up great in the rain and wind. You will need to purchase more stakes if you wish to guy. The zipper occasionally sticks on the main door, but that is the only real compalint. I am 5'8" and have ample head room to spare. Can easily accommodate 2 twin air mattresses and gear or 2-3 Cots. Be forewarned, if you are planning on cold camping, this is not the tent. The spacious interior does not hold in heat like a smaller tent would! Overall, I am in love with this tent and hope it holds up for years to come!

Nice tent but for a structural flaw

First time using the tent was some windy days. I had purchased additional sturdy long stakes and guy lines for all tent connections. Those all held up fine in strong winds. What failed was the very small velcro straps on the inside of the rain fly which wrap around the poles. Once those gave out, the tent lost stability. I spent a lot of time re-securing those straps, but could not keep up with it. Ultimately the poles bent to the point the tent would no longer stand up. I feel that if those velcro straps had been more sturdy and connected to the poles, the tent would not have lost stability. Otherwise, a nice tent, but had to return it.

Wind Achilles Heel, Tiedowns Not Reinforced

Among 400+ nights camping this is my favorite tent with a few caveats: 1. You MUST secure the poles to the rainfly or the tent will collapse in moderate winds 2. The tiedowns below the REI logo aren't reinforced well and separated from the rainfly fabric. I took the tent back to REI and they graciously exchanged it for another. 3. The vestibule zipper carries tension / load so consider dry lubrication to keep it from jamming, as the documentation suggests 4. I had zero issues in rain but the ventilation when the fly is zipped up isn't great

Love the height - wind needs guy lines

I had this out near Hood River last weekend. Very windy weekend with a front passing through. Was my first time using and the setup was very easy with color coded loops and snaps. I easily setup myself with rain fly even with some wind. Unfortunately REI does not include enough stakes to use all the included guy lines. I could only setup one line and it wasn't enough to keep one side from folding in on my overnight. It bent my pole too. :( Despite this, I love the tent for its size and height I can stand up in (I'm 6'2). Haven't been in rain yet, but looks like well protected. I will purchase some para cord and additional stakes and it should take care of the wind issue.

Not for Texas

I purchased this to replace an old REI Hobitat tent. I was happy with the Hobitat (although it had a design flaw where rain would pool on the top). It was spacious and I was able to stand up. However here is why I returned it: 1. There is a mesh window very close to the floor. Im not sure why they thought this is a good idea. I was camping on a windy night and it blew in dust even with the cover on. 2. I wish they would provide more stakes since this isn't ideally shaped for windy weather 3. Upgraded to the Kingdom series. Maybe I'll consider an improved 2nd gen. If improved

Powerful

Put this baby to the test the day I got it. Took it to Port Aransas on the beach and it was extremely windy the whole time. Didn’t budge. Didn’t slip. Didn’t trip brother. I love the simplicity that REI offers to every single tent now. Tents an 11 Out Of 10. Don’t be a city slicker. Make the purchase and keep on keepin on. I love the simplicity that area offers to every single tenant now

beautiful tent with bad material

I bought this tent for the size as i have the half dome 2 person tent for the past 5 years with no problems. After the First camping trip with this tent I had to return it because some kind of insect made a whole in the tent it was gooey and disgusting. They replaced it for me with a new one so I was happy. Second camping trip the whole tent collapsed from broken poles because of a little bit of wind. This is a 300 dollars tent that was flat on the floor. When at the same time my two other friends had 50 dollars tents from walmart that where standing with no problem.
