Great for Car Camping with Children
This is a great car camping sleeping bag for little, but it is too big for backpacking. If you need something for backpacking, I recommend finding a different sleeping bag or a blanket. I bought three for each of my kids (ages 5, 4, and 2 at the time) about 2 years ago so I think we have finally used them enough for a review. We primarily used these bags for car camping in the North Cascade Mountains (North West Washington State). We have camped on both the West and East sides of the Cascade range as well as the Olympic Peninsula. We most often "dispersion camp" far back off forest service roads. We have also done some backyard camping and an RV trip with them. Overall, these bags work very well and are a solid product. Here is what I like about the Kindercone. Best of all, the stuff sack cinches the sleeping bag making it shorter which, as advertised, goes a long way in helping little ones stay warm. (Whether you purchase a Kindercone or another sleeping bag, find something that ties off short to keep your little one(s) warmer. I consider this a must). The stuff sack is attached to the sleeping bag so I can actually find it when packing things up amid the chaos of young kids zipping around. I do not think I can overstate how appreciative I am of the attached stuff sack for this reason. I have not had too many issues with the zippers getting stuck on the fabric. It does happen from time to time, but it has never been an issue to get a zipper unstuck. Washing these bags has not been a problem (of course follow the wash instructions). I consider the price of the sleeping bag for what you get to be completely reasonable and fair. Here is what I do not like. First off, I have a disclaimer- the ones I purchased a few years back are rated to 30F, not 25F. Now for my gripe- my kids still seem to get cold even in the lower 40's. All this means is I have to bundle them up a little better before zipping them up, but I would prefer them to be comfortable to a lower temperature. Hopefully the newest model advertised at 25 is better. If you have never slept next to a young child, be aware- children sleep like a windmill all night long and never stop moving. What this means is keeping the kid and sleeping bag attached to their sleeping pad is pretty much a lost cause. This bag, and every kids sleeping bag intended for camping, can benefit from straps or something to attach a sleeping pad to the sleeping bag. Parents, I highly recommend finding a sleeping bag with this feature if you have young kids and plan on spending nights in a tent with them. Do I recommend this product to a friend? Maybe. It depends on the intended purpose and what features are most important to you. Yes for car camping. Yes for being able to shorten the bag. Yes for moderate or warm temperatures. Yes for being able to easily pack up. Yes for the price. No for backpacking. No for colder temperature. No for keeping the sleeping bag on a sleeping pad for more than 60 seconds. I give 4 stars for an overall good children's sleeping bag knocked down primarily for kids getting cold and a little bit in the hopes REI will add something to keep a sleeping pad attached. There are a few other options not currently sold by REI you may want to research and consider, but do not cross this one off your list right away as the Kindercones have worked well for us.

I want to love it
Nice bag with one silly but major flaw: it needs a thin fabric sleeve on the back to attach a sleeping pad to it. It's a kids bag, my kid does not sleep still in one position. Even though she falls asleep on a sleeping pad she wakes up freaked out 3 feet away; while camping, it leaves her on the cold ground, at a friends house with hardwood floors she awoke slithered under a bed. Please add a sleeve to the next model.

Nice bag. Not great for backpacking.

This is a very nice sleeping bag. I like how easy it is to close off the bottom portion of the bag to create a tighter fit for growing kids. It is plenty warm and the heat rating seems accurate. We had initially purchased this bag to use as a backpacking bag for our 9 year-old. while the bag is not extremely heavy it is very bulky. So much so that we had to carry this bag in our pack and put one of our bags into our kids Tarn 40 pack or they would not be able to carry anything else. We have since switched to a Radiant 20 bag to use for backpacking, but the Kindercone is still a great car-camping sleeping bag.

Great bag for little campers

We purchased these bags for our 4 and 7 year old daughters last year. Both cute and well made, they've now been used on several camping trips and other adventures, and have been perfect every time. On a recent camping trip, the kids had no idea what I was talking about in the morning when I mentioned the cold we adults had just suffered through--they had been toasty warm and comfortable all night! I love that the attached stuff sack keeps things neat in the tent as well as helping to size the bag for a custom fit every time--these bags will last for years. Definitely recommended!

Good sleeping bag

This is a great sleeping back for kids (or height challenged adults). Seems to be good Quality material. We particularly like the fact that the stuff sack is connected to the bag itself. This eliminates the chances of a child misplacing it. It also can double as a place to store the next morning's clothes for cool mornings. The drawstrings around the head part of the mummy sack are nice. This is NOT a compact / minimalist bag, so do not anticipate that. We got one for each of our 3 kids and anticipate them keeping them for years to come. Some kids sized sleeping bags have been overly on the small size, but these are almost big enough for me to use (6' 175Lbs).

Good camping bag, but NOT a backpacking bag

This is a good bag, it's warm and comfy. My kids like it a lot. It's WAY too bulky for backpacking use. I have to wonder if there's a mistake in the listing for "Best Use". It's on the heavy side, at 3+ pounds, but the REAL issue is the bulk. It doesn't compress well at all, even in a compression sack I can't get this beast down to a manageable volume. On the plus side, my girls, even on chilly wet nights in the 30's, never get cold in this bag. I would buy this for car camping, but not for backpacking

Really great bag

My eight year old son has slept in this bag down to 33 degrees with comfort. He didn't complain one bit. I don't doubt it would be comfortable down to its rated 25 degrees. The feature with the attached stuff stack that can be used to cinch off the bag at your child's height is also very clever and useful. My only complaint is that the "stuff sack" attached to the bag is not a true stuff sack. It doesn't have any straps to compress the bag down like a normal stuff sack would. It's minor flaw to an otherwise excellent sleeping bag. When the bag is packed up, it takes up more space than it otherwise would.

Great, warm, cozy bag for children

We bought this bag for our 4 year old. She slept extremely comfortably in the bag with no complaints about temperature whatsoever during nighttime temperatures o’in the 40’s. Really nice touch that REI designed this with bluesign materials and extremely happy to see that REI is taking the lead on designing products that are healthier and safer for us to use. Only compliant is the stuff sack to store the sleeping bag. It is built into the bag, which is a great idea in concept but doesn’t execute well as it is awkward to stuff.

Super cute and comfy!

I'm 5'5" and this bag fits juuuuuuust right (I don't think 5'6" would fit comfortably). All other women's sleeping bags were a bit too big for me since I'm pretty skinny (105lbs) so this bag was perfect. Kept me warm during a chilly 20deg night. I love the cute animal and leaf print! Wish I could use more kids stuff because of all the colors/patterns/cuteness.

My 3 year old girl was warm and cozy. 38 degrees

Just finished up a weekend family camping trip in NC mountains. My 3 year old girl slept on an air mattress with this bag. She slept like a log and never complained about being cold. The quality of the bag seems good and I like the convenience of the attached bag which doubles to reduce the air space inside the bag for smaller people. Very efficient. I would recommend. Only recommendation is to add a compression strap to pack it as small as possible. Helps when parents are carrying lots of gear and storage space is a valuable commodity.

Not as nice as the older ones

We have an older version of this bag for another child and love it. This one was disappointing because the newer version (our old one is 10 years old) has a slicker lining which means little ones slide out easier when using it. The other disappointing part is the elastic on the front of the hood rather than a cinch all the way around. I don’t expect the elastic will hold up long term. Otherwise, we like the bag. Fun bright colors and long kids bag. The stuff sack being attached is a nice feature.

Legit, reasonably priced sleeping bags

I bought a previous version of the kindercone for my kids a couple years ago. They have used the bags several times and they love them. On our last camping trip the temperature got down to the low 40s and the kids were fine. My youngest actually cocooned in the bag until the temperature warmed up. My kids are young - currently 4 and 6 - and they have used their bags on 3 camping trips as well as during "sleep overs" in one or the other's bedroom. The bags have held up really well and I don't suspect we will need to replace them until they outgrow them.
