This product has been updated to increase profits at the cost of the consumer and what was once a great product. My girlfriend bought one of these bags a few years ago and loves it. The material is thick and durable enough to withstand anything you throw at it. The backpack straps are also a great touch to help carry the bag over longer distances. I decided to buy one of these for myself only to discover that North Face has updated this product to use a much thinner, weaker material for the bag to the point where sun now permeates through the material. The new updated design will be great if you want to replace your bag every year.
The newer (2018) North Face Base camp duffel no longer has carry handles. North Face told me to contact REI online to see if they had the older version. (REI brick and mortar stores do not have this version.) REI online has this duffle - which is pictured here and does have the carry handles. Not sure how long REI online will carry this version but it comes in really handy to have the option of both carry handles (that velcro together) and the backpack straps. I bought 2 different colors and both had the carry handles. Bag fabric is very durable. Strong zippers. There is also a side zippered compartment on the end of the bag that is handy. Well made.
As a truck driver I live out of my bag. I was tiered of going through bags of less quality and the frustration that comes along with that. So I decided to bite the bullet and purchase this beast. I am very satisfied with my purchase and impressed with the durability. This bag is truly “heavy duty”, I have not babied the bag and have begun my assault, to my surprise it still looks new. Please be aware that this bag will not qualify as a carry-on if it’s fully stuffed. I stuffed it 2/3 of the way and barely made it through the airport as a carry-on. I like it so much I want another one in a different color!!
I've needed a new duffel for years... when I started looking in to which one I wanted to buy, I decided to look at more sturdy duffels I could use on motorcycle trips, camping, etc. That's when I read about the Base Camp bag (also looked at Patagonia and others). I ended up with the Base Camp and while I haven't really put it through a rugged test, I just love the bag. I took it on vacation last week loaded with snorkeling gear and it was awesome. Love the size of the Medium, the construction is fantastic, fabrics are super tough, and making my way through the airport with the bag on my back via the backpack straps was really easy. Wish I had purchased this bag years ago.
I've sailed on merchant ship for 36 years and this is the toughest and driest sea bag I've ever had. If you enjoy beating up your gear like I do, then this is for you.
what is so fantastic about this bag is that if it were not for the zipper, it would be completely waterproof. it holds up great to damage. my first one held up for about 2 years of daily carry, and at least one camping/hunting trip a month, until it fell off my motorcycle and was dragged for half a mile. I can fit my entire one person(and dog) campsite in this bag. enough gear for me and my dog for a week if needed. even in pouring rain for 2+ hours on my bike, everything inside was dry. i love this bag.
I've had my eye on this duffel for a long time and finally justified the purchase as I needed to have all my camping gear separated from my backpack for a soil survey trip. I was able to pack my tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, sleeping quilt, hammock, swimming gear, and five days of clothes in this duffel. I put it at my feet in the tent. The back pack straps made it easy to carry from the vehicle to the camping area leaving my hands free to carry other things. I will definitely be taking this on future trips and vacations.
I’ve had these duffles for 20 years. My older bags are constructed of a more supple and more durable TPU fabric. The newer bags have the added features of the end pocket snd internal mesh pocket. The bag is still durable, sadly, it’s just not made lie it used to be.
I bought this duffle to replace a cheap bag that was getting the job done, but not doing it exceptionally well. The design/pocket placement is well thought out and the waterproof material that the bag is constructed of is probably the biggest selling point. On one of my camping trips I failed to close our tent’s rainfly completely and a brief shower soaked the floor of our tent - my duffle was the only one of the group’s with dry contents.
The bag itself is very nice. If it had a shoulder strap (it comes with backpack straps) and another end pocket it would be perfect.
