Slick Units Here, Bud
These things add at least 5 mph to your bear crawl and at least 2.3 cm to your vertical leap. The zippers are strong enough to hold in a pocket full of hot dogs or whatever trail protein you choose. If you're like me and want to be certain these warlocks don't fall down, that built in tie is strong enough to winch out a Geo Metro or tie up a couple of river otters.

Wanted to love them
I've worn Patagonia for decades. The last few years have been hit and miss with their products in the sizing and material quality. Had to go up a size over usual sizing. The outer material of these shorts is really nice. The inner liner while a great idea isn't the right material/cut for the design. When you sit down the shorts tend to ride down. When you stand back up you're having to pull the shorts up to avoid Plummers crack. Have not experienced this with other shorts. Disappointed. Returning.

Loved them on the Pacific crest Trail

While hiking the Pacific crest Trail in 2019, after realizing long pants were uncomfortable and hot and underwear were creating chafing problems, near the 180 mile mark in Idlewild, I decided to buy a pair of nine trails 8 inch Patagonia shorts with mesh Boxer type liner, on trail they would dry up quickly when wet, durable, zero chafing, those shorts worked awesome, I hiked in that pair all the way to Canada, they were definitely falling apart and the liners were shredded after six months of hiking. So as soon as I got home I bought 2 more pairs, as I noticed they were getting harder to find. Loved these shorts! I would highly recommend them

Liner is cheap and tears quickly.

Liner didn’t last long and all. The previous version of these shorts were high quality and lasted 3+ years. My recent pair didn’t last 6 months. I’ll try to send them in and get repaired.

Real pockets!

It’s getting hard to find running shorts with real pockets, like for phones and ID cards and keys and stuff you’d carry running. These have 3 nice securely zippered pockets (sides comfortably fit a regular iPhone 6-8), a good liner, and seem to be very well made like all Patagonia products I’ve experienced. I wear about 33” waist and so I got a medium size per the chart. Found them to be a bit more snug in the hips and thighs than I’d expected, but I kept them and have run with them and found them to be fine. They’re my favorite running shorts now and I’ll probably get some more. Great product!

Versatile and comfortable shorts

Great shorts for running, hiking, and chasing toddlers. These are my first liner shorts since high school track and are super comfortable. Not too short and not too long, perfect for a dad in thier 30s with soccer thighs. Pockets are a decent size, back could be a little bigger to fit a Galaxy Note but its OK in zipped side pockets. Odor control is pretty good and they dry out quickly. I bring these on trips and have them ready for quick runs when I get a free moment. Originally bought medium in the versatile grey for intl travel and added the bright blue on clearance. Can run in, swim in, and wear with a polo to lunch. Great shorts.

The Best Ever

These are my go to shorts for about everything active: Backpacking, running, and working out. They also work great for just hanging around. The liner prevents chafing so you don’t need to wear underwear. They are a great length and the pockets are zippered and deep enough to make them effective. The back pocket is a great size for a wallet or keys. I have had zero wear problem so far and they seems super durable and comfy at the same time. My only small gripe is they are a touch pricey and the back pulls down a bit low over my backside sometimes. I am 5’8’ 155 and the M is perfect. These are really excellent backpacking shorts in my opinion.

One of my favorites

I have had these shorts (last years model 2019) and I love them. They are super comfortable and the liner is really nice too. They seem super durable, I work in the outdoors and wear my shorts every week for a couple of day, and there are no tears or signs of damage. I like the zippered pockets to keep my stuff from falling out. One con is if the pockets aren't zipped when sitting change and other small things can easily slide out. I haven't tried their 2020 version but I would highly recommend these shorts to anyone who may be on the fence. You won't regret it.

Favorite Shorts...Functional, Durable, Comfortable

After 2 years of heavy use, I cannot find fault with these shorts. I've worn them everywhere from hiking in Brazil to biking in San Diego. They're my go-to for running, walking, hiking, and even working out in the gym. The zipper pockets are probably the best feature. I like the liner too. I've worn them cycling before, and they're better than running shorts, but of course, not ideal because there's no padding like true cycling shorts. But they work for that in a pinch. Okay I thought of a minor ding on these shorts: the draw string knots easily. Even with that, they're my favorite, and I'm buying another pair. True to size, fit is great, color (black) is fantastic.

Great for running

I bought these trail shorts for running and used them for the first time yesterday. The material is light weight and the liner is comfortable, even in the humidity. Its great to have 3 good size pockets, all with zippers, so that I can carry stuff. My only problem is that they seem a little small. I have a 31 in. waist and bought a Medium. The waist is a little tight, but not uncomfortable.

Great short, with one small complaint

This short is great for running and backpacking. I just finished a trip where I wore them for 4 days straight hiking, running, and swimming. They dry quickly after a swim and the liner prevents chaffing even when they are wet. They have also held up great and I will likely buy another pair. My only complaint is that they bunch up in the front toward the elastic band and it doesn't look good. I thought it was because they were a little too small, but the large is way too big and I've subsequently lost weight and it hasn't helped. Otherwise, these are really great shorts.

Good material, not generous fit for athletic build

I really like the material, it sheds some water when running in the rain which is cool and doesn’t hold a lot of water when wet. Zip pockets are great and probably the best feature of the shorts. I normally wear a size 32 waist pant and found that the medium had plenty of room in that region but around the butt was a little tighter then I’d like to show off if you know what I mean. I’m no body builder but do lift weights and do CrossFit to get strong for backpacking, skiing, mountain biking and hiking. I wear a medium in other athletic shorts and have no problem. Hope this review helps others who might need the advice before dropping serious money on a pair of shorts.
