Perfect Balance Between Weight and Warmth
I have a small collection of down and synthetic jackets and parkas. Most are either too warm to wear during activity, and not warm enough to throw on during extended rest breaks. The Patagonia Micro Puff Insulated Hoody is the perfect balance—I can wear it all day. I’m going on three weeks of wearing the jacket. I’ve skied with it twice, worn it on a long hike, and spent 6 days in Iceland wearing the Hoody daily. I’ll start with what I liked about the Hoody. It’s very light and compact. I can stuff in in the back pocket of my jeans or compress the entire jacket into one of the pockets and throw in it my pack. For me, the Hoody is the perfect balance between weight and warmth. The Hoody has a generous fit. I’ve worn it over a base layer and medium weight wool sweater. Length is perfect. I’m 6’2” and the jacket extends a couple inches past my waste line. It’s not constricting and allows for plenty of unrestricted upper body movement. The cuffs on the end of the sleeves are slightly elastic, but don’t stretch enough to fit over the base of gloves. I found that the sleeves form a good seal to keep in heat. The two outside pockets are large and the zippers are easy to use even if wearing gloves. Inside the jacket there are two large pockets which are big enough to hold my ski skins on descents. My dislikes are minor. I wish the Hoody had a napoleon pocket on the chest. I’ve gotten used to those pockets for holding my phone. Lastly, I wish the hood was large enough to fit over a ski helmet. Overall, I love this jacket and highly recommend it.
Awesome jacket
I bought this for my boyfriend and he absolutely loves it! It is a great design and keeps him warm in mild to freezing temperatures.
Fantastic for backpacking
I purchased this about a year ago to use while backpacking due to its weight, packability, and synthetic fill. I originally planned on getting the EE Torrid, but did not want to wait for the long lead time. I found this for 50% off, and I’m so happy I did. It’s surprisingly warm given how light it is and I have had no issues with durability. I also prefer the synthetic fill as I don’t have to worry as much about getting it wet. While ~$300 is pretty expensive, if you can snag one for under $200, definitely do. I love this coat.
Awesome all around jacket
I have a lot of jackets for all kinds of activities, but this jacket has become my favorite especially for back country skiing. I didn't search out this jacket, it came to be through a deal and I'm glad it did. I used it almost exclusively this past winter for skiing. It was warm enough in most conditions down to 10 degrees F, but also comfortable at 40 degrees. Super light weight and packable. It fits me well with no restrictions. I use it mostly in the northeast but It would work anywhere. I always carry a shell, mostly the Stretch Rainshadow shell and the two are the perfect combination. All my other coats are sad just hanging out on their hangers. I feel bad but what can I say.
A Huge Improvement Since the Nano Puff
I have had a number of Patagonia jackets. This one is by far my favorite. The PlumaFill has a much better feeling than their regular synthetic insulation and better mimics the puffyness you get from a down jacket. The one thing I do miss is the fact that the inside pockets no longer have zippers as they used to in the Nano Puff but that can also be looked at as a better thing since it keeps the weight of the jacket down. Very crucial if you are going backpacking and literally every ounce counts.
Incredible warmth, weird hood
I ended up returning this item in favor of the hoodless version. The jacket is incredibly warm. I was comfortable in 20-degree weather with just a t-shirt and the hoody. The problem is that the hoody just looks very strange. I now understand that the hood is designed for people wearing climbing helmets (I think), which makes more sense but limits the product's usability for other purposes. If you are not going to use the hoody for climbing, it just looks strange. It comes down really far on the forehead and while it makes you that much warmer, you look like an alien.
Great midlayer
I got the dolomite blue which looks great with the green trim. I like the way it fits, I am broad shouldered and found that the large was a good fit without being baggy around the waist, and the sleeves on the large are just long enough for my ape arms. I'm usually a big fan of drawstring waists, but the elastic hem did a good job of blocking drafts. The shell material is very lightweight, I've only worn this under a shell and have reservations about wearing it as an outer layer. The jacket is very warm for its weight, warmer than I was expecting, especially given how lightweight the jacket is. It kept me nice and toasty on a couple of storm days as Bachelor with just a base layer, and my shell. However, the jacket does not breathe as well as my normal mid-layer, a nano-air, so I found that I quickly got warm and sweaty while boot packing in the sun. I think between the two they cover all conditions. Unlike the down jackets I own, none of the insulation has tried to escape, and I assume that will remain the case due to the PlumaFill insulation. The only thing missing, in my opinion, is a chest pocket, but that's just a personal preference and would add weight.
perfection* almost
I love this jacket the way it fits, looks and all the features ideally if Patagonia were to add just a tad more insulation a few more ounces and call it the New Nano Puff that would be excellent I hope they're listening ;) otherwise its a great. To be hyper-critical the material is louder than Nano puff think rustling paper.
Great jacket... for around town. Not tough enough
Pros: Very warm and lightweight, easily compacts Cons: The material is very fragile. Do not take this jacket anywhere near bushes, trees, vines, or anything that will snag your clothes. It WILL tear and then the filling just spills out. I'm used to clothes ripping and the nylon eventually getting holes, but this is ridiculous. We're talking gashes. Buy this jacket if: You only want to wear it around town or in a city and keep warm. Pass this jacket if: You want to take it out to any non-urban or suburban environment.
I thought it’d be warmer
For a material comparing itself to down, I thought it would be much warmer. If I hadn’t bought it for half price, I would be returning it because there is no way it is worth $300 to me. By itself, it works ok for 40 degrees and above (for me) and isn’t too bad into the 30’s when paired with even a minimal layer underneath. Where it really shines though, is when it is paired with something warmer (like a light down sweater). It is extremely light, seems well-made, breathes well, and I appreciate the deep pockets.
