Perfect for the beach

This review is a long time coming. Bought this summer 2017 right before a trip to Kauai. The first time we set it up it wasn't perfect, but once you get the hang of it it works every time. The key is to point the opening upwind, and plenty of sand in the anchor bags, and extra taut. That's the only way to defeat a strong breeze. The Neso Grande was plenty big to give shade for 4 adults and a baby, several large beach towels and blankets and our bags. We got plenty of looks and interest from passersby asking what brand and where to get it. Tip: to keep the footprint down and make it extra taut, the back/bottom sandbags we kept closest to the sheet (by pulling the rope thru the sandbag) and used the extra rope to tie it closest to the sheet. Hope that makes sense. Also, fill up the sandbags and lay your Neso as stretched out and taut on the floor before you install the poles. I think the most important advice is dig a small hole where the sandbags will be, fill the bags as much as you can, put them in the hole, and bury the sandbags. This will keep them extra secure in an extra breezy situation. If you put them right on the sand, one good gust can slide the sandbags out of place. Lastly, the ropes, sheet, and sandbags are made of a really lightweight and quality material, but we found them to be extra sturdy. The carry bag is also super convenient for transporting the entire thing. I recommend this product for a chill day at the beach. Hope this helps!

Maybe just for light winds
Rooster

I can only say that my experience with this grande nesco shade was quite different from some of these reviews, as it couldn’t even stand up to 10-13 mph winds without blowing all over and falling down. Let me just say that I am an engineer and upon reading the negative reviews about this not holding up to winds, I thought they were just not quite smart if that’s ok to say. But I tried this twice, once in sandbridge with 22 mph sustained and once in Va beach a couple weeks later with 10-13 mph winds. Stretched out the bags, filled with sand to the max, and even buried them. The 22 mph is definitely the max, as the bags kept pulling out, even though they were buried. I read all the lit and watched the vids, but even in the “usual” beach winds performed poorly. Thankfully I bought from REI and returned for full refund. This system is only good in low winds, believe me. I spent hours trying not to look like a fool in the beach twice. Moved the bags to get the leading edge exactly perpendicular to the wind did nothing. I would not recommend this product unfortunately

Well worn after just 2 weeks.

Purchased the NESO Grande in March 2022 and set it up for the first time in July 2022 when we spent 2 weeks in at a North Carolina beach. Many people stopped by to comment and said they liked the set up better than the many noisy shade sails present and other set ups. The winds were very strong, a fisherman told us they averaged 30mph off shore and local Google readings were 17mph inland. By day 3 I had pretty much mastered the set up - pulling a tight 'X', filling and burying the sandbags, orienting the NESO into the winds from the SW. The NESO did well and was up every day from around 8 am to 5pm. After 2 weeks the NESO showed significant wear and tear - some of the fabric edges were beginning to frazzle and the corners were well worn showing early signs of ripping. Two of the four poles showed significant wear also, with the ball tops coming off and the bungie loosing it's stretch. One of the ball tops was severely deformed and all 4 of the bases are beginning to show signs of future cracking. I really liked the tent but am having second thoughts due to the wear and tear experienced after 2 weeks, in fairness, the locals claimed that the winds wear abnormally aggressive - I know my umbrellas and other tarps would not have even lasted a few days..

Cool shade, works well.

This shade is easy to set up (watch a video once and you've got it), shades the whole family, and is easy to spot from down the shore or out in the water. It's really a great sunshade. It holds up to most winds (am in Florida and have tested in in light breeze (5*), moderate wind (4*), and recently in high wind (could not hold up). One thing that may be problematic - after the first several uses I've been able to see a spots in the shade where the pole-ball goes, because it's starting to take on a permanent stretch. I hope that isn't the first step towards breaking.

Awesome but material is junk!

Loved this shade! Downside was that it faded with 8 uses and fabric started to deteriorate as well, to the point it was see through. Would have kept it otherwise!!

I love this so much

I was setting it up in a strong wind in Hawaii and a guy walked by and laughed saying "That is a lost cause my friend" 3 minutes later I was chilling in the shade watching the waves crash at my feet. I have tried a lot of shade structures and for beaches you can't beet this thing, it is quick, easy, and light enough. Tip for set up that I learned early on, when you are filling the ankers with sand digs little whole then when they are full drop the bag in the whole, not a big whole only like 3 or 4 inches, In a strong wind the ankers can slide on level sand but in a divot you are solid. This thing goes up so fast and drops down so quick, the ability to place the ankers before raising it into the wind can not be over looked. Highly Recommend.

Great experience even with a stiff breeze!

I bought this shelter to replace an older REI alcove which is finally wearing out after many years of use. I wanted something lighter and easier for the rest of my family to setup and take down. Bought this and used for two days this past weekend in steady breezes between 5 and 10mph, with some heavier gusts now and then. It worked really really well. Made sure to set it up opening into the wind and by varying between two, three, and four poles (highly recommend the extra set of poles BTW) I was able to maximize shade area and structural stability through the day. The second day had to bury the sandbags to keep the wind from dragging them out of position, but it still only took a few minutes to get setup. My wife and daughter were able to carry and set up the shelter with a minimum of effort so they can enjoy it even if I am not around to set it up.

Perfect for a newborn at the beach

Bought this for a week long trip to Orange County beaches (San Clemente to Laguna) with a newborn + three other kids. Needed something light because of all the other baby gear we took. with our last baby those Tommy Bahama umbrellas turned into projectiles when it got really windy and almost impaled the baby. Can’t say enough about how great the Neso is under all conditions. Replaces 2-3 umbrellas, and you don’t need to hold the poles in the wind as long as you bury the bags; easy setup/break down. Added bonus that the bright color and it not being 1/10000000 other umbrellas, easy ups, or tent shades made it like a homing beacon and super easy for kids to find it on crowded beach. can’t wait to use at the campsite and on the soccer field.
