Worth it if it’s you

Wonderful bike. I had major buyer‘s remorse when I first bought it. Why had I abandoned my old road bike? My old -family- road bike? The simple old road bike, light, breezy, delicate, with the beloved curved handlebars and minimalist design I’d been riding for 20 years? Why?? Across the month it sank in that I’d made the right decision. What kind of riding was I realistically, regularly doing? 10-20 miles around town. Not 50+ miles between towns. Not races. Just 10-20 miles around town. No popped tires on rocks, glass or when briefly forced upon sidewalks. No awkward breaks at stoplights. No special shoes. Quick starts at drivers waving you on unexpectedly. Easy ability to ride on grass temporarily during a block or two of road construction. Small curve hops possible as needed. This is a practical, quality, affordable utility bike. Just be honest with yourself. Start with you first. What kind of riding are you actually doing? If you’re like me, maybe you take a hard look in the mirror and recognize that you’re a solid intermediate rider, one who can go out and have a ton of fun on a day ride while also humbly respecting the expertise of elite cyclists. If that’s you, this is an outstanding bike. No more buyer’s remorse on my part. Hope it’s the same for you. Best of luck~

Strong Frame - Horrible Wheel Set
Mike
I am a large man and wanted a bike for fitness rides (6’01’ / 270 lbs). The Cty 1.1 appeared to fit that bill. The frame is strong, and it has versatility built into it for expansion (water bottles, fenders, racks, etc). In about six weeks I was able to ride about 400 miles on city streets. However, over the past month, three rear spokes have broken, and the front wheel has fallen out of alignment. Based on the squeaking from the front rim, I’m sure additional front spokes are close to breaking as well. It turns out the wheel set is a basic generic low-grade model. Giant makes these bikes with low end components under the Co-Op brand. In addressing this issue with REI staff, they acknowledge that I am riding past the capacity of the bike and they will accept a return. Better components are not included until the Cty 3 series. If you are a potential buyer, consider your size before purchasing this base-line model.

Versatile and Budget Friendly.

After accepting that I may have to spend $2K or more on a modern, new bike, I ended up buying this bike from REI in M (mainly because, due to the bike/supply chain shortage, it was the only one they had) to replace my crashed 21 year old road bike. I’m really liking it, even after a few months of use. Going from skinny to wide tires feels a lot better, and I don’t even notice any extra weight. The ability to go off the pavement without worry is very freeing, and of course, all the advancements in brake and other tech since my last bike purchase in 2000 is wonderful, even if this model still has what modern users would consider throwbacks, like some external cabling, and 3 rings in the front. Here in the mountains, you can’t go anywhere without facing a hill, so I really appreciate still having the large number of gear choices I was used to on my old Marin Verona. Even loaded down with the additions I put on it, the aluminum frame feels very light to me, and I love the 42 tires, but don’t feel slowed down by them. I’ve even ridden it on rough gravel and through muddy parts where the paved path ended. I’m really loving the versatility of this hybrid and don’t miss my road or mountain bikes, plus I saved about $2K by getting this one.

Great starter hybrid

Great starter hybrid bike. Seems well made. Aside from the basics, it comes pretty bare (lacks reflectors, kickstand, etc) FYI, but makes it easy to customize. This was my first hybrid and the tires are quite narrow so be aware of where you’ll be riding. Paved is great. Light trails can be uncomfry. Also note the handlebars are quite low for leisurely riding but can be easily changed. Only real complaint is it seems the black color is easily scratched. The other color holds up better (we have 2).

Perfect Hybrid Bike!

My wife has tried to get me into cycling for a while, but I hated it until she finally found this perfect hybrid. It’s amazingly sturdy, light, and easy to use. The lines are so clean and stately. It’s just perfect for me. I’m 6’4” 250, so I needed something extra large, and this fit the bill perfectly. We rode 20 miles on the Eastern Shore of MD my second time using it, and it was very enjoyable.

Well built and fun to ride!

We previously purchased a step through CTY 1.1 for my wife at the REI in Boulder then my son bought the standard mens large and when they went on sale recently I pulled the trigger for yet another one for myself. I own several road bikes but wanted something for casual rides with my wife and son. It will also get used if friends or family visit. The bike is a good value at regular price but a steal on sale. The aluminum frame is stiff and solid, well built. Components are all very serviceable, although entry level, and they can always be upgraded later if needed. Shifting and braking were excellent. Decent hubs and headset bearings and a sealed crank bearing. Nice stem, seat, handlebars and seat post. Ride quality is efficient and handling is neutral. I have used it on the bike trails near home for casual rides and its fun to ride! Tires can take up to 80 psi and are Kevlar belted for puncture resistance! My wife son and I are all super pleased! I think the frame sizing runs a bit small as my wife 5'4" needed the medium as did I in the mens at 5'7" and our 6 foot son took a large.

BEST BEGINNER BIKE EVER

I tried to not get emotional while writing this review, but too late! This bike has meant the absolute world to me for the last 3 months now. My mom helped me purchase this bike, mainly to commute, but wow the adventures this bike has taken me on… It has been through rain, mud, sand, and through all major blvds. This bike is tough, reliable, and FAST!

Front wheel fell off!

My 15yr old got this bike for his birthday on 6/14, did not get to ride during summer, used the bike to school for daily 1mile round trip ride. Today the front wheel fell off and landed him a full body crush! REI in Hillsboro Oregon told us once the bike is out of the door, they are no longer liable. They further suggested the lever that holds the front wheel in place could loosen over time or from possible accidental bumping into other things when parked. Later they concluded the fork is deformed from the crush and can not be replaced. Finally they decided to return the bike and reorder one. We are lucky that our son is only bruised!

A lot of bike for your buck

I bought this bike at the beginning of the summer. I haven't cycled since I was a teenager and wanted something reliable, solid, but not too pricey. I have been riding it to work a few times a week and have taken it on a couple of longer (to me) rides (approx 10-15 miles). I don't feel like I'm going to eat gravel if I have to go off the path. I'm a 5'6" female and ended up getting the men's medium. I highly recommend going into an REI shop and test riding/ being fitted onto the right bike. Lastly, the bike itself is stylish and not too heavy. I would recommend this bike to any casual to medium riders for fun or shorter commutes.

A very nice, very smooth ride

I debated whether to buy this bike or a more expensive "name brand" bike from a bike shop. Other bikes had more features such as hydraulic brakes and internal routed cables. But having looked at this bike at my local REI store, I decided to give it a chance. I've probably owned 20+ bikes as an adult. I currently own a high-end carbon road bike. But this CTY 1.1 is the quietest, smoothest bike I've ever owned. Weight is not bad for a city bike, the 700x40C tires give a smooth ride, and the stem/handlebars seem to be a perfect setup for me. Finally, I love the satin black finish. Buying this bike was a victory!!!!

Great looking bike, just fragile

I bought this bike instead of another bike from another big name brand. The bike felt great, and for the price, you couldn't beat it. However, I've had the bike for 5 months, and the rear tire is so out of alignment it looks like I threw it off a roof. The disc brake is also out of alignment now, and the pads are scrapping. I feel like I'm having to constantly tweak this bike, and it's only been 5 months. I reached out, and was told normal wear and tear isn't covered. Is it true that this could be normal wear and tear? If so, this bike was a poor purchase on my end. I can only imagine this bike in a another couple months. Disappointed in the REI brand.

Excellent bike for the price

I've had this bike for a year now, and I've really enjoyed it. I ride a combination of paved and dirt roads in Colorado, and it performs excellently. The tires are beefy, and I've never had a flat, even though those I'm riding with have had many on the same routes. The disk breaks are a fantastic feature for this price point, and they work wonderfully. When riding down out of the mountains at steep grade, I never have any trouble keeping my speed under control. REI has really packed a lot of solid components into this compared to competitors at the same price., Buy it!
