Great versatile boot
I bought these boots right before leaving for 3 months in Europe, and it was the best decision I made leading up to the trip! They were great for city walking in Paris and Edinburgh on cooler days, and perfect for hiking on the Isle of Skye. The breaking-in process was not bad at all, a few blisters after a day of walking in Paris but perfect thereafter. I have fairly high arches and these had enough support for me. Plus they're extremely cute, and I got compliments on them all over Europe and still get them back at home as well. Basically they're perfect hiking/walking boots without making you look like a dweeby tourist abroad. Plus they're waterproof!
great for city and hiking
Bought this for a Europe vacation in spring, which can be cold and rainy at times. I wanted something which does well with all outfits, being on our feet for hours and light hiking AND looked good, and this shoe has surpassed all expectations! highlights: 1. Fit: True to size. I'm between an 8.5 and 9, with long toes. The 8.5 fits me perfectly even with wool socks. The shoe feels a little snug at first but opens up with a day of use, since the leather expands. If you have high arches, you will have to loosen the laces all the way or your foot wont go in! My biggest challenge was to get the ankle area to open up to where it flexes with my ankles as I walk. I walked my dog in them for a week or so before they felt flexible at the ankles. So definitely break them in before traveling. 2. comfort: Two factors I look for in a good shoe- Arch support and cushioning (Think running shoes). This shoe provides great arch support. We walked 8-10 miles a day on cobblestone streets, plus stood around in museums and were generally on our feet for 10 hours a day, and my high arches felt supported. However, after every 3-4 hours of standing, I had to take a coffee break because there is not a lot of cushioning. The sole offers a moderate cushioning but my running shoes exceed the comfort. 3. Usage: I have mostly used them for 2 europe trips, which means a lot of walking/standing on wet cobblestone and stone streets. I also wore them on two moderate hikes in Switzerland where they did well. I felt confident walking on loose gravel and sandy paths. No problem at all with pouring rain and even streams. 4. Look: Women often have to choose between fashion and function. I chose moderately fashionable over extremely uncomfortable! This shoe looks stylish, and I wore them with dresses as well as jeans. But it does give a rugged, fashionable hiking shoe look, so if you can pull off a hippy-ish look, this is for you. Also, the trick to getting great photos is to point your toes front, because the side profile is a little clunky. Also, the shoe scuffs remarkably easy, so again, gives a rugged look. I don't regret my decision at all! After 6 months, 5 countries and many miles, my shoe is still going strong. I'm picking up more colors for myself very soon!
Walked all over Iceland & Western Europe in these
Bought these for a winter trip to Iceland and Western Europe. Wore these everyday in slush, snow and on cobblestone streets. My feet stayed dry and warm (good wool socks). No rubbing or chafing even after a fifteen mile treck through them the streets of Paris. They were stylish enough to wear with black pants in the evening - I didn’t change shoes the entire trip. The olive is an olive brown - looks more brown to me, especially after wear. I’m a size 8 or 8.5 depending on brand with feet that are on the wide side of regular. Bought these in an 8.5 and had ample room for smartwool socks. The heavier, hiking style were a snug fit but worked.
Quality Boots!!!
I LOVE these boots. I was going to buy a different pair on Garnet Hill because they had a 20% off sale. Then I remembered that last leather boots with leather soles fell apart in rainy weather. I then looked at REI on line for a sturdy weather resistant pair. When I made it to Eugene and got to try on a pair I was really happy. I wore them immediately and walked for hours. I must say I wondered if they were too narrow but they have changed to form to my foot. Great quality in materials and workmanship. I choose the greenish color and it has the neutralness of tan, black or brown. Perfect with jeans, skirts and dresses.
Wonderful boots
Wore these on a 7 week backpacking trip. I walked over 400 miles in these boots and only in the last 2 weeks did they start showing signs of serious wear. They held up wonderfully and I could not be more impressed. The laces did separate pretty early on and I was worried about them breaking before the end of the trip but they held up. Very comfortable form the start, not rubbing breaking in. I sized up (usually a 10-10.5) and got an 11 to wear a thick sock with them but they did end up stretching a fair bit and I would've been fine with my normal size. For being minimally insulalted they were very warm in very cold temperatures.
Well Made & Attractive Boots - wide feet
My feet are wide across the toebox, and I was hesitant to buy these boots online but they have worked out great. I bought my normal size and did not have to size up. They are leather, so I think other reviewers have found them snug to begin with, but they have flexible soles and are breaking in just fine for me. I don't think many people are used to breaking in real leather boots anymore! I recommend walking around the house or around town in them before going on a long city vacation or hike so that they are formed to you. Very happy with my purchase- I will probably get these again in the future in other colors.
Mostly Love
I bought these as a cool weather wondering around and mild hiking boot. They're perfect for just that, great for a couple miles of walking, comfortable enough to wear all day, and they really are waterproof! I do not recommend them for anything more than a few miles or for below 20 degrees. With good wool socks they're sort of warm and handle a foot or so of snow but I've learned the hard way they're not great for a full blown Michigan winter. I wear them exclusively with tall socks so I've never had a hot spot with them, but they do wear down the heels of my darn tough socks. I've read that some people had trouble with the laces but I've had these for over two years and the laces have held up well.
My Kodiak work boots
Love these work boots. Keeps my ankles firm as I walk and do yard work. Fit is true to size. I recommend at least one or two sizes bigger to allow for heavy socks.
Fantastic, supportive everyday boots!
I got these boots to be my everyday winter shoes for North Carolina (mostly mild weather) and some trips to Michigan (ice, snow, slush, salt, etc.). I wore them several times a week for about 2 months, and though the leather looks a little distressed, they've held up well so far. They're also comfortable! I have plantar fasciitis and wide, flat feet, and these boots replaced my Birkenstock leather boots. I can wear them all day with minimal pain, especially with nice cushy socks. They provide pretty good ankle support, feel secure on icy sidewalks, and don't leak easily. I really like the way they look. In black, they're a little combat boot-y, but can still look okay with a dress and leggings, or nice pants. They make me feel powerful. :)
Kodiak Women's Boot - "Olive" color
Having bought this boot in the "Caramel" and "Red" colors, I was surprised when I received the "Olive" color because unlike the previous two, the olive is not smooth leather, but rather more of a buckskin/suede leather. This was not explained in the product description. Also, like the other two colors, the "Olive" color isn't true to the photo on the Web site. It's more of a dark brown. I wish it had been more "green". Nevertheless, it's a comfortable boot and well made. I bought mine 1/2 size larger than my normal walking shoe so that I could wear thick hiking socks or two pair of regular socks when hiking. I find that this cushions my feet more for long walks. These boots are a bit stiff when you first use them, but they become more comfortable the more you break them in.
