Shortly after purchasing wore maybe 10-12 times heavy pilling of fabric around ankle and tongue.
I'm no longer a mountaineering stud, and confine my adventures to 3 miles a day, with some granite rocks but nothing sharp. Yet less than a year later the treads have worn down to nothing in various spots, and are flopping off in other spots. The tops are also shredded in place. I wouldn't complain if I'd abused them in the Whites for a year, but this is a lot of money for a shoe that can't handle a 60 year old guy walking 3 miles a day. Loved the shoe while it had tread, but can't recommend it for the price.
I’ve had these shoes for 1.5 years and used them for short hikes. The toe box is huge and for me the shoe is one of the most comfortable day hiker I’ve ever had. However, the upper lace eye which is a strap material looks like it’s close to breaking (wouldn’t trust it in multi-day hike) and the heel area inside the shoe has developed a hole in the cloth and through the foam. This is super disappointing since the rest of the show is totally fine and looks like it would last another two years. I’m on the fence whether I should order a replacement.
I have been wearing Keens exclusively for @15 years. While the quality has gotten worse over that time frame, the comfort they offered kept me coming back for more. But no longer! I bought a new pair of Targhee IIIs last summer, and the waterproofing lasted for maybe 2-3 months at the most. I live in KY and we get a lot of rain, but 3 months of waterproofing for $150 shoes? Today I noticed that the sole has separated from the upper after less than 8 months of use. I have been patient with Keen because I love the fit so much, but I am done with Keens now. I refuse to give my money to a company whose products continue to get worse and worse.
Out of the box, this is one of the most comfortable shoes I've worn in a bit. However, after maybe 50 miles of use the sides started to fail. Small cracks along both sides of the grey leather-like material and stitching started fraying. Tread pic included to show low wear from hiking.
Read the reviews and put off buying a pair due to one review stating the fabric loop for the shoe lace at the top of the shoe broke after a short time. Looking at the shoe, it looks like an obvious weakness. Never-the-less, I ended up buying a pair of grey ones at an REI. After about a month, I loved them so much, I ordered another pair but in brown. I have put over 200 trail miles on the brown pair and they still look nearly brand new...but slightly broke in. See pic below of the tread wear on the soles. I don't have nearly as many miles on the grey pair but the tread wear is very similar. I lace these shoes up tight putting a lot of stress on that fabric lace loop and it is not showing any sign of wear. These shoes have a nice wide toe box (not quite as wide as Altra's or Topo's) and a deep heel cup that allows me to insert my custom orthotics. The soles provide more protection over rocky terrain than trail runners with rock/stone shields. Planning an Appalachian Trail thru hike in 2020 and have tested several different shoes/boots such as Topo Ventures, Altra Lone Peaks and Salomon 4d Quest GTX boots. These Keen's made the cut and are the shoe's I will start with. I'm interested to see how many miles I can take a pair.
Bought Targhee III for a week backpack in Dolly Sods W Va. Bushwhacking and trails over bogs, stream crossings, meadows, and rock outcroppings. Found the shoes to be nimble and dry. The exception is navigating over rocks when the shoes nimble sole was too flexible and caused me to lose footing and confidence. The older model Targhees had significantly better support and stiffer sole to attack rocks. For me the Targhee III is good for moderate terrain, but not the all around shoe the older model Targhees were. Also I wish Keene would solve the glue issue that all my Keenes eventually suffered.
I'm very disappointed. These shoes usually last a year to a year and a half. I have purchased Keens for years and this is the first pair that has failed prematurely. The shoe still has plenty of life in it however the lace-loop wore through. They have used the same lace-loop design on the shoes for many years but the material has changed and is not as durable. My old pairs show no fraying or wear even after two years of use. This new pair broke after only 7 months of use.
I loved these shoes. I do not wear them as "rugged" as many, but they were great for the outdoor soccer games through November we attended for our son. After 6 months however, the stitching by the top of one toe is coming out, not torn etc just coming undone. Both shoes are seeing the upper separate from the lower on the top quarter of the toe as well. This is progressively getting worse and the "waterproof" is no more as the separation continues. I have just filed a warranty claim so we shall see how that goes. I was really looking forward to wearing these during the spring mud fests coming up with soccer...
I love these shoes! Purchased for a hiking trip in Sedona, AZ five days where the minimum hike was about 8 miles. Most comfortable hiking shoe that I have owned (& I believe my 4th pair of Keens). I did not think I would need the waterproof feature but, one of our hikes had us crossing a stream about 10 times and my feet stayed dry. They are a little orangish now due to the red rock dust but, I will wear these until they fall apart.
