Excellent Emergency Support from Garmin
I have the previous version of this 2-way PLB, and cannot speak to new features in this upgrade. But ... I can speak to Garmin's Emergency Response team, and in a word: excellent I called an SOS on the Hermit Trail (Grand Canyon) this weekend at about 4 miles down the trail. Garmin's team responded within 15 mins, and worked with the NPS and my emergency contacts to get us safe and keep family informed. Time lapse from SOS to NPS helicopter response: 2 hours A big kudos to the NPS too.
The Best for it's purpose; but there are problems
An almost indispensable aid in the backcountry; and great for anywhere in the world where you want to track and communicate when there is no cellular service. But when Garmin took over from DeLorme, the inReach Sync application for countless of us became a nightmare. This worthless application basically bricks your device from updates and syncing. Note: I have the DeLorme inReach. However, internet searches verify that even the upgraded devices cannot sync, especially with Mac computers. Beware: you may not be able to sync or update any firmware until Garmin gets their act together.
value depends on your use
use product for communicating in off grid areas offshore fishing etc....don't need map or long term battery as have method to recharge with ease, put phone in airplane mode and last an easy two days on the water, have used from new Zealand to Alaska and for that function I couldn't be happier as a means to stay in touch with family and business
unable to activate on weekend
Purchased this on a Friday evening, unable to activate as keep getting error message on Garmin website: "•The device object contains invalid values.'. Garmin has NO customer support weekends or evenings, so am currently waiting to try and activate with help of support on Monday. I have worked for many years for a company that provides medical emergency alerts, and understand that IME activation can be picky, but this is ridiculous. I spent 6 hours re entering basics like phone numbers, address and birth date to satisfy the system, and cannot move past the first page due to the error message. Keep in mind that Garmin contracts out to a third party for emergency response, so I am sure that is top notch, but the product support is very weak.
get the explorer plus
functionality is absolutely great. However, you need two devices to use a map. with a Bluetooth pair device, you enter into the world of the power draining, battery sucking constant Bluetooth connection. Even in airplane mode, the cell phone goes quickly. spend the $50 extra and get the one and done device.
Better, but not great yet.
This unit is a hardware upgrade to the prior version. The screen is bigger and a bit more clear. It is slightly easier to manage moving through the screens. And, supposedly, the batteries last longer... I could not tell. However, the absence of a GPS map reduces it to being just an expensive emergency communication device. That is what it is. Garmin simply wants you to also by one of their GPS units. And the idea of pairing it with your iPhone in order to use the phone's touch keyboard and to see a real GPS map sounds great until you see how fast your phone battery drains. All in all, it is a step in the right direction by Garmin, but does not create a WOW! experience. If you want the "insurance" of having a means of communicating brief messages or an SOS anywhere on the planet, this is a good device. But, don't expect anything more from it.
A must have for camping, hiking, kayaking, etc
This device was extremely useful on my recent camping trip up the entire West Coast. Much of that trip was out of cell range, and it became my major mode of communication to my family. I wasn't out of satellite range ever, and the graphics that the recipients get is beautiful.
Issues with the website
Lots of broken things on the website and garmin doesn't fix. Used to be fine before Garmin bought them. Its a dilapidated interface with broken buttons. Very frustrating for such an expensive item.
good luck
Bought this for back country communication and when you are in a mountainous area it does not work very well. At first texts would go threw 70% of the time now on my second season the texts won't go threw at all, I have to send e-mails and trying to return a electronic device at rei is a joke
