Great 3-in-1 jacket

I just picked up this jacket because this recent cold wave revealed that I seriously needed a really good, warm jacket that looks good both on the slopes and in the city. So I travel frequently from the Midwest to Chicago and New York and needed a good jacket for those walks from my hotel to the L and/or subway. I saw this jacket in the KC REI store and figured I would give it a try, based on my previous experience with Patagonia. I was comparing to a North Face 3-in-1, but it had the typical fleece as a liner. I probably have a dozen fleece jackets in my closet, so the fact that this jacket uses a down liner really caught my eye. First of all, it's warm. This jacket will keep you warm well down into the teens or maybe even single digits (Fahrenheit that is). Of all the the 3-in-1 parkas I tried on, this one just felt right. I really liked the hand warmer pockets with their fleece lining. Some jackets, the hand warmer pockets just seem like their too low, or too high. These are just right; you could easily find yourself walking around with your hands in these pockets all day. Before buying any 3-in-1 jacket, I test all aspects of the system. Both the outer shell and liner felt really comfortable on their own. Also, the liner is reversible. If you like the puffy, quilted jacket look, you can wear that or the slick coat look with chest pocket is nice too. This jacket also packs down nicely, which is great for travel. It's really lightweight, so you don't think it will be that warm, but it is! Okay, so now for the bad, otherwise I would have given this coat 5 stars. The colar. It is really tall, stiff, and it doesn't really fold down nicely. It just always sticks up. It's really nice when you zip up all the way and keeps your face warm, but it's just so stiff. I'm hoping that will relax some with wear. Next, the hood. It's really large and probably meant to go over something like a snowboarding helmet. But when you flip it over your head, you realize how roomy it is and you can't see. You really have to tug on the shock cords to get the hood into a semi-manageable shape where you can see. Overall, the positives of this coat far outway a few minor negatives. The sizing is great. I am 5' 11" 180lbs and I was very comfortable in a medium. It's also worth stating that this is a very comfortable parka to wear in the car. I have some really nice jackets that I like, but if I'm going to drive very far, I take the jacket off. This one is just so comfortable, which goes a long way to not only keeping you warm, but your overall enjoyment of the product. I was on the fence about this jacket at first, but the REI and Patagonia generous return policy convinced me to take a chance. I'm glad I did!

How did this make it to market?

I'm totally disappointed in this jacket and here's why. The zipper is so stiff that that when you look down it jabs you in the throat and at the bottom if you have the snow skirt in use then it jabs you in the crotch because of the design. Let me explain. The snow skirt it too high or the internal coat is too long and hangs below the snaps which pulls the zipper in to your crotch. These new water proof zippers are nothing more than a gimmick. Do they hold out water? Yes, but way too stiff to zip. It's a cheaper than making them the old fashion way with a cover or flap. And finally there is no unzip from the bottom which is nice when you have to go. Next the fleece in the collar only cover your lips. So when you turn your head you hit frozen nylon with your lips, that's cheap they only save 3 dollars. The pocket zippers zip up to close ,why not down and let gravity help keep them closed? Thanks for putting a zippered hood on the jacket. The attached ones merely collect snow until you flip it up and then it goes down your back so I've never like them even when its snowing. If the collar is the right size you'll never get snow down your neck with just a collar. I don't want your internal coat that I have to buy. My system works perfectly and that internal coat makes it too sweaty. So I pulled it out and just used my fleece jacket which helped but was still damp on the inside. And that really surprised me because that coat is supposed to breath better than GorTex. It didn't. Finally, it runs small.

Great for occasional skiers

Living in the South East, I only get to go on one ski vacation a year. I wanted a jacket that I could actually use more than once a year. For me, the inner jacket is the PERFECT reversable winter jacket for Georgia winters! I wear it all the time and I can still bust out the shell over top of it on really cold days and during my ski trip. SCORE!!! Not gonna lie, it took me about 20 minutes to figure out how all of the features worked, and I kept discovering more stuff as I went along. Also, I was amazed at the engineering and quality of both jackets. VERY WELL MADE - AND I AM A VERY PICKY person!

Ideal for Chicago winters and Irish summers

An excellent and versatile jacket. I bought this jacket a year ago to take on a trip to Ireland. The Irish weather is notoriously variable -- mist, driving rain, gales, and sunshine. I needed a jacket that was flexible enough for hiking in the mountains on a wet and blustery day but also light enough to wear on a cool evening. The various combinations (inner and outer layers separately and combined) provided everything I needed. The jacket also worked extremely well for daily wear in Chicago winters; the hood will even cover a fedora comfortably! So I bought another to leave in Ireland next summer.

Great Winter Outershell

Great winter jacket! Wore this jacket snowboarding with the temps being in the teens and windy and it kept me snug as a bug in a rug! I just had base layers on underneath and the insert and outer shell of the jacket definitely kept my body heat in and the wind and cold out. Highly suggest this jacket!

Nice but a few shortcomings.

Jacket needs loop for hanging, attach loop, (collar) not rugged enough. Needs 2 attach points in sleeves, not 1. Needs 3 attach points in collar for when hood removed, not 1. Zipper flaps and snaps would have been nice. Kind of weary of main zipper with such fine teeth. CRITICAL FAILURE: when liner in shell there are NO inside pockets. Otherwise a good, waterproof, warm jacket.

Nice all around jacket

Went to REI this winter to get a new jacket but held out for a good sale. Tried on several jackets while there. Liked the Patagonia 3 in 1. Usually ware an xl but it was way too big. This spring I purchased one online size large. Fits great. I’m 5’10” 210 lbs.

Great jacket!

I bought this for my fiance for our recent trips to Iceland and the Shetlands. He loves it. It kept him warm and dry through rain, sleet and snow. It is a larger cut. He's slim but normally wears a large. We ended up going to the store to try the medium. There was a huge difference between them. There was so much extra room for the large whereas the medium gave him the slimmer fit he's used to.

Perfect Fit

I tried many jackets. This was true size: large - 42" chest 34" arm 33" back. Pockets in front are large and fleece lined. Inner jacket has front pockets and one chest pocket where I put my phone so it doesn't freeze and lose charge. One problem is it requires dropping the inner zipper to get to it. Also, there is no zip pocket on the sleeve for lift pass, but that is a small thing. Great look, color and waterproof exterior fabric.

Warm and waterproof jacket

I bought this jacket because of the bright colors, the water resistance, zip out liner, and of course, Patagonia. This is very warm, functional jacket, and held up in very wet and cold conditions. The bright colors stand out on the snow making it easy to be seen by friends and other people. I would like more pockets on the jacket, and that’s the only reason it got a four star rating. It is a stout and robust jacket made by Patagonia. All that needs to be written.
