Are you serious?
Wow Patagonia you really dropped the ball on this Atom pack. I own several Patagonia bags including Black Holes, a messenger bag and the smaller but mighty 8 liter atom bag. The shoulder straps on this bag are seriously like 80 grit sandpaper! Right out of the bag I know there’s no way this this will be usable. REI will probably appreciate that the return is brand new with the tags still on it because it is going back to them ASAP. Don’t buy it. I love Patagonia products and don’t usually write such strongly negative reviews but this one is totally merited. I’m bummed, I was really looking forward to owning this bag.
Excellent daypack
I disagree with the other 2 reviewers concerning the shoulder straps. At least for me, a 59 year old active woman, the straps are very comfortable and I've been using this pack daily for 3 weeks. The outside pocket is great- holds my wallet and phone and pocket journal easily, though if I were traveling or in a big city and concerned with pickpockets, I'd not store these important items there- they'd go inside. When I walk my dogs and want to carry a water bottle, I take the wallet and phone out of there and replace it with the water bottle. I love both the simple but effective inside storage pockets and the zippered back pouch for my iPad or various other items I want with me but don't necessarily need daily. The main pocket is big enough for a light jacket or a book or two. All in all, I think Patagonia scored on this pack and it's well worth the $79.
Great minimal pack
People complain about the scratchy shoulder straps. Yes, the straps are a bit on the scratch side but they smooth out after a few days. I use this bag everyday for work, fits a 13” MacBook, 9” iPad with plenty of space for headphones and a sketchbook, etc.... If you’re looking for a minimal bag to carry around everyday, this bag will not disappoint. Would buy again.
Great Backpack Except for the Shoulder Straps
I was looking for a slim but structured backpack that would be easy to use and comfortable for a full day, and this backpack looked like it could do the job. The pack is very slim despite the 18L capacity, zips open fully, and has some nice pockets, but the shoulder straps is where it falls short. The foam and fabric used for ventilation are abrasive, causing my neck and arms to feel all scratched up after wearing the pack for a short time. I couldn't continue wearing the pack and hope they will update the shoulder straps in the future.
Perfect for commuting and travel
I bought this bag for commuting and short (1-2 night) trips, and absolutely love it! I got it to replace my old Jansport, as I wanted something smaller and with more breathability. I use this to tote my Surface Pro and other daily essentials (wallet, phone, keys, headphones, etc.). It's very slim, which is awesome for riding the bus/subway. The back panel and shoulder straps are super breathable, and the chest strap helps keep the straps away from my armpits (which is a must for walking to work in the summer!). It feels very sturdy and well-made (like all Patagonia products I've tried) and I think it will hold up for a long time. Finally, don't let the complaints about the shoulder straps and back panel being "too rough" drive you away. Unless your skin is like tissue paper, you will not get blisters when you wear this bag! It's true that the straps and panel aren't *soft* but they are perfectly comfortable for anyone with normal skin. And since they are so breathable, they will actually help prevent chafing.
Great Urban Carry
I got this pack as a replacement for my older North Face Electra after they updated the design and took out a lot of the features. I stopped using a traditional handbag years ago and these smaller backpacks work wonderfully. I like that this pack has a separate, fleece lined pocket on the back so I can keep my wallet and phone secure. I like the front zip pocket so I can put quick grab items like my keys in there without opening the whole pack. I also like the fact you can remove the sternum strap. Yes, the strap is scratchy at first, it's mesh and it's scratchy at first. I suggest just playing with th straps when you are sitting watching tv or something. It will make them more flexible and calm down the mesh. Also, what they don't tell you in the description is that there is a hydration port so you can put a bladder in it.
perfect size for a day hike
I own a Refugio 28 but it was too big for day hikes this is pefect. only complaint is the pack does not breath that well on my back and gets warm.
Decent lighter duty backpack
First off, my Atom Pack replaced an aging JanSport backpack from the early 2000s, as the JanSport bag was wrecking my shoulders on longer hikes. Where this bag excels: It works very well when doing lighter (~12lb) long distance (~10 miles) hikes or heavier short distance hikes/traveling in airports, etc. Think of it working best with short day hikers or trail runners. It also has some niceties like a place for a water bladder, etc. Where this bag falls short: The straps are a pain point if the bag becomes too overloaded or the user is wearing a tank top (I did both this summer, and I ended up with rashes and sore shoulders). Like most backpacks, the weight is concentrated in the shoulders, instead of being more evenly distributed like larger packs (this killed me when I went up to Snow Lake the first time). The backpack also lacks dedicated trekking pole straps/equipment. I will be keeping my Atom for lighter day hikes/runs (~10 miles), the gym, and lighter (non-off piste) snowboarding trips. For most hikes, I've switched over to my Osprey Atmos and have been happier with the switch.
Excellent small pack!
This is a perfect size/shape for travelling light. Minimalist design makes for easy movement through airports and transit hubs. Even fully loaded it rides perfectly and I have had zero issues with any strap discomfort. Highly reccomended!
Great day bag, minimal, bike commuting
I use this bag everyday and I love it. It is compact and simple, such that it vanishes from awareness while wearing. I have not experienced any pain while using the bag. The laptop sleeve fits my 13" macbook air like a dream and would fit the 13" pro, both in a protective case. I like using this pocket, being able to pull out the laptop without opening the entire bag is great. What I like most about the bag is that the main compartment offers full use of the capacity without appearing bulky or empty. With just the everyday essentials the bag doesnt feel empty, like a larger volume bag would, and then still space for the random bottle of wine pick-up and an extra layer stuffed away. The front pocket is perfectly out of the way, I usually keep my charging cords and bike lights, other utility things like that. The pocket keeps these items handy but tucked away, love it. The daisy chain bit on the front is easy to clip in and out of, I keep a hero clip there. This is an awesome little bag, I fly with it, bike with it, and is my go to bag for any given day.
