Simple, Compact, Effective. Three words that describe this stove. I have used this stove for several years on a daily basis. There is something satisfying about a fresh cup of coffee or hot tea after a hard days work or for calibration. Iv even roasted the occasional dove breast over the flame when the occasion has risen. This stove stays in the truck, back pack, boat, or blind where ever I go.
Can’t say enough as to how handy this stove is, although I do laugh because this tech is about the same as it was 30 yrs ago. My father had something close to this many moon ago, BUT the new stove systems you can disconnect from the fuel source, which is a major improvement. Have only used this once on a recent trip in rather ideal conditions but it worked flawlessly. It folds up very compact and for me I’m able to stuff the stove, fuel cansiter, stand, and matches into my kettle that you see in picture. Total weight comes to 1 lbs 2 ounces for my set up, bery haply with that!
The MSR PocketRocket 2 stove is lightweight, easy to use, and durable. I've brought it on multi-day backpacking trips above 5K feet and it packs easily into my Snowpeak pot (Trek 900) along with a gas canister and lighter. I appreciate the flexibility of this stove to accommodate whatever size cookware I choose to bring. I also appreciate how controllable the heat output is. I've dropped this stove multiple times on granite and it holds up with no scratches. Compared to my friends' Jetboils, which they brought on a recent trip we were on together, the PocketRocket 2 seems to take longer (and therefore more gas) to boil water. It was breezy up in the Cascades and I wished I had had a windscreen to speed up the heating process. The Jetboils didn't seem hindered by the altitude or wind. I was also envious of their built-in lighter. It took my friends one push of the lighter button to ignite their stoves. In all, I prefer the lighter weight and flexibility of the PocketRocket 2 over the Jetboil-type systems. Similarly, I like that I can use a non-coated cook pot -- a small personal preference -- over the non-stick ones that come with the Jetboils. That said, I will keep my eye on the MSR WindBurner and Jetboil as they continue to improve.
I bought my Pocket Rocket probably 7 or 8 years ago or more. It has been on numerous backpacking treks through the Smoky's. I've gone through a lot of stoves over the last 40+ years of wilderness backpacking: Gerry (remember those!?), Svea (still gets used with my Sigg Touristy kit), MSR International, etc and I can honestly say that for a propane/butane fueled stove, this little guy pumps out almost as much heat as my Coleman fueled stoves. I was skeptical at first just because of the tiny size. It may be small but it will intimidate other stoves you put it near! Can't recommend it more.
Cascade Designs has pretty good products, however when something breaks, their Warranty/Service Department appears to be understaffed and overworked as they have not responded to my requests. I Purchased the MSR PocketRocket II stove 08.31.2019, used it approx. 120 times over 5 years. In 2023 one of the pot support arms started to fail by swinging out of place. I dealt with it for a hiking season and now it can’t be trusted to hold a pot of boiling water. They have not responded to either of my Warranty and Repairs requests in Nov/Dec of 2024, and by searching online, other long-term customers have also been abandoned on the trail by Cascade Designs management. Bear this in mind when you consider purchasing their products.
Ive had this stove for almost a month and have used on two weekend adventures. It works great. I needed a stove to boil water for dehydrated meals and this did the job very quickly. In Nevada I fight the wind almost always and this stove has worked perfectly. I liked it so much I bought a second one for a friend who was looking new stove. I hope they like it as much I have.
My wife and I bought 2 of these stoves. Absolutely the best purchase. Living in CO most out camping trips took us above 10k and these little guys never failed us. Even at 12k they performed perfect.
Took it on two recent backpacking trips in the Olympics and it worked well on both. Even on the Beach it didn't have any real issues with the wind. Boil time was quick but one of the main reasons I selected this stove was other review on its ability to simmer. Cooking up a dehydrated meal is just that that appealing and it handled a low simmer pretty well and cooked what we needed. I'm a bit new the the isobutane canister stoves so i don't have anything to compare to for efficiency but averaged less than half a small 110g canister a day between coffee, breakfast, and dinner for two people.
I hit the limitations of this stove. Pros: -Cheap -Very small and lightweight -Reliable under light use -You can modulate the flame Cons: -Wind is the enemy -Not fuel efficient -Cannot handle snow. I had my nozzle seize in the cold (5F). -You have to keep the nozzle very clean. Any debris like dirt/snow/soot will clog it If you need a stove for heavy and continued use, this is not the product for you. Think, multi day, cold, dirty, snowy, windy. If you need a stove for lightweight short stints, this is the stove for you. Think weekend trips, moderate temps (above 25F), no digging through snow, low risk (if your stove breaks it’s not the end of the world).
I purchased this for a backpacking trip I'm taking a few months from now as I wanted to have time to try this out a few times first as I haven't used a stove like this before. It works perfectly. Extremely easy to attach to the fuel canister, purchased separately. Easy to open the valve and lit up right away. My meal was heated up in just a couple of minutes. I love the little case it came with for storage. The whole thing is so small that it even fits right inside my mess kit. I couldn't be more pleased with this.
