Love this tent.

I picked this up last night from the Tacoma, WA REI. First of all, the staff there were awesome. They let me use an area of the store to set everything up so I wouldn't be caught in the rain. They took care of all of the packaging recycling and assisted me in the set up when I needed it. Thanks, guys! The actual tent is great. Very sturdy, durable and comfortable while still lightweight. I spent just under a couple hours assembling everything I needed to mount the tent to my roofrack. The mattress inside is super comfortable, and the rainfly is really strong. The cover that keeps everything packaged and protected is really legit. It's strong and thick, before I was worried that the cover wouldn't be as protective as I would like for the rainy WA weather, but I'm confident it's going to keep everything nice and dry. I have only a few, minor issues: The cover was missing a buckle, the associate at REI gave me one of their stock buckles off the shelf for free to replace it. One of the rods that props open the awnings doesn't fit into the slot on the bottom of the tent, it wasn't shaped enough so I'm going to have to beat it with a hammer to make it small enough to fit in. And lastly, when I was tugging on one of the cover flaps to secure it, it tore. I wasn't tugging aggressively so I was surprised that it ripped so easily, so be cautious when putting the cover on top. These issues in no way turn me off from the product itself, I love it and the price point on this is excellent. Last thing, I drive a 2010 FJ Cruiser, it's a taller SUV, so I found that while packing up the tent I needed another step ladder to get everything packed up. I'm 5'4 and wouldn't have been able to secure everything nice and tight without climbing on the hood or on my seats. I'll be looking for a lightweight ladder to keep with my vehicle to make packing this up easier. Great product, awesome store staff, and a lot of excitement.

Leaky wet tent stuck on your roof!

I bought this tent today 3/24/17 used my rei membership 20% off, saved 270$ super excited. My family and I have been talking about buying a roof top tent for a few years, finally pulled the trigger. I live in portland Or. today was pretty rainy. I set the tent on my rig between rain showers today. Mind you fully set up tent and rain fly, every thing as directed by the provided instructions. It then proceeded to rain fairly hard, good test for the tents first go at it. Ok Really? The Rain fly leaks at every attachment point. Yes everyone. Even leaked at the seam on the skylight. The seam tape job is bad on this thing. Oh wait my mattress is getting wet on the corners. It's seeping though the tent. Ok I'll stop, this thing is sad. 1000$ leaky tent stuck to the top of my truck. I will now be returning this tomorrow 3/25/17. This is my first review of a product ever. I feel the need to warn you all it's bad. The only positive I was at home when I realized this thing sux. I will be sleeping in a warm dry bed tonight. No thanks to this tent.☹

Pie in the Skyrise

First off, I researched RTTs for a long time, and when the Yakima Skyrise came out, I was intrigued. The low cost was a plus, as well as the solid backing from a company like Yakima made the idea solid in my mind. None the less, I pursued a Tepui Tent instead, based on the few dollars tand solid reviews that tent received. After speaking with their company rep in Santa Cruz, I was placed on the backorder list with a down payment and the assurance that a tent would likely be available by July 4th. I like this tent mainly because I would not need to invest in a Yakima rack to mount it on my 2013 Crosstrek. After passing the 4th with no word from Tepui, I pulled back my down payment and relied on the one solid review I could find that was in depth and positive yet fair, and critical. So I pulled the trigger, installed the rack and then went to REI in Berkeley to make the Skyrise purchase. At the REI, the sales lady Suzy was not very familiar with the Skyrise, but I'm not surprised, as it is fairly new on their shelves. She was really helpful though, and with the help of some colleagues, we had the box at the door and ready for purchase. In the parking lot, REI Associate August helped me place the box on the roof and on the newly installed Yakima Rack, where I proceeded to strap it down with ratchet straps for the ride home. Once it was solid, we headed down the freeway with our $1K investment testing out the rack for the first time, not for the faint of heart. All was well as the install was solid and the straps held firm, we waited until the next day to do the install of the Skyrise. Overall, the install was easily accomplished with the help of a friend, and the online YouTube video Yakima has on the Skyrise installation. once the parts and pieces were all accounted for, things moved along nicely, with total time of install for us being about and hour and a half, when you take out the pauses we had for all the little other things that crop up when installing something. Everything went together easily and we did deviate a bit from the instructions. For one, we removed the mattress completely before starting in earnest, and put it inside so we could have a look at it (many had complained of debris in the mattress from the manufacturing, i.e. holes drilled, chips left behind), however, our mattress was pristine, and we found no debris left behind in the tent by the Yakima manufacturing team. Our other deviation was to just eyeball the rack mounts and slap the tent up on the cross bars then do the adjusting necessary to gain the right distances and such on the rack. I did have to adjust the Yakima rack forward bar back on the side rails a bit, so I'm glad we did it the way I did because it made it much easier to clamp down on the crossbars with the tent clamps then tighten the rack mounts back onto the side rails. Overall, the tent is really solid on the roof, so much so that I can rock the Subaru back and forth fairly violently with the tent base and not budge it on the roof rack. The interior is plenty big enough for two if you sleep like we do, which is nearly always in spoon fashion. It would be tight if you don't sleep that way for two adults, but for us it's great. With the rain fly on, it gets hot quick in there in the direct sunlight, but most tents do that anyways. We'll add another mattress pad to the one there, as it goes with our sleep system anyway (bottom sleeve bag), and because I'm not 10 anymore and why should I be less than comfortable. The pad that comes with the Skyrise is sufficient for most, and is nice to lay out on. Overall, while not field tested yet, I think the tent will suffice well for 3 season camping. I read all the complaints about how it gets wet, but I did find one reviewer who said his did not leak one bit in a few snow storms. This is not my first rodeo, I've backpacked all over the Sierra for the better part of 40 years or so, and anyone thinking this tent will suffice in snow storms is fooling themselves. It's not meant for that... think car camping summertime where if it starts to torrentially downpour, you pack it up and go home. It's not for base camping at Everest, it's for car camping, and for that purpose, it will do well. I would definitely recommend this tent for anyone who wants a bit of luxury in their camping but does not wish to join the ranks of RVers just yet.

Problems from the start

I've been excited about getting a rooftop tent for months, and armed with my 20% off and dividend it was the perfect time to pull the trigger. I opted for the SkyRise 2 because of its weight, breathability, and ease of taking on and off. In trying to set it up, I first realized that one of the screws was filled in and unusable. No big deal, I thought. I can fudge it for now and get a replacement. Then, I started to set up the rest of the mounts. Quickly I realized that the pre-drilled holes didn't line up to allow the mount to lie flat on the bottom. It was just a little off, but too much to properly mount. On top of these issues, we were told in the store by staff that we were testing out a two-person model. It turns out that we were in fact stretched out in a SkyRise 3, and it was disappointing to find myself (6'2") hitting both ends of the tent with my head and my feet.

Yakama Ma goes camping

I just purchased the 2 person tent a couple of weeks ago. I got a friend to help me put the hardware on the tent and then mount it on my Honda Pilot. It was realatively easy to mount the rack brackets (though we did have to drill 2 new holes as the pre drilled holes were not in the correct place for mounting so tent opens to the rear). Also had to ream one hole for the ladder (not really a big deal). Really pleased with the quality of the tent and the way it opens and closes. Will be taking it on the road soon for a trip from Harlingen TX to Colorado. Even figured out how to get my 60 lb. Border Collie into the tent!

Great product but tough set-up.

I don't usually do reviews, but after paying $1,000 for this tent it should be known to all. Upon opening the box, and assembling the tent I found 2 tubes that were not drilled and had to re- drill them & set the screws properly. The rubber feet on the ladder keep falling off so I had to glue them on. Be sure to put blue locktite on the bracket bolts, Seems they may loosen over time ( just my opinion) plus the instructions don't tell you that. All the Velcro on the tent is starting to fail after 2 trips, they need quality Velcro or change the design to snap closures or something better. Poor quality control... If you have a tall vehicle, for some people it might be tough to lash & Velcro everything down, secure the ladder, and put the travel cover on, especially if you have a Kayak or other toys on the roof. Knockdown of the ladder is a pain in the butt on my tall vehicle. Other than that the skyrise 2 rooftop tent is awesome so far.

confirmed it leaks

after a week of gloom and doom and plenty of rain, I can confirm the yakima skyrise rooftop tent leaks. I removed the mattress just in case, everything was zipped, latched, velcroed down. The leaks were small but they were there, so as far as a semi permanent summer camping deal, no go. it's pretty clear to me after having this RRT for a week now it's a first attempt from yakima and it sucks, would not get again and maybe even run. :( lesson learned stay away from first attempts even from decent companies. if only the people from the companies would go camping and use their own stuff they might notice stuff like this?

Another Leaking Tent!

I too, like the previous review, bought this tent with my REI dividend and 20 percent off coupon. I had it on top of the car within an hour on a Yakima Skyline base and was on the road for a night of camping. That night we had light rain the entire night. Just like the review below I had a very leaky tent and my mattress was soaked in all four corners. Is this something that can be fixed. I'm sure it won't hold up if it starts pouring on one of our camping adventures. I'll be waiting to hear from Yakima and REI before returning the tent.

Very Disappointing Don't waste your money

Purchased this tent today, drove 2 hours to pick it up. Got home and unpacked it. Tent was dented, dirty and had aluminum shavings all over it from where the manufacturer drilled holes and didn't bother cleaning it off. Once I unfolded the tent there was long black hairs on the mattress and of course more metal shavings. Nylon had small tears all over the tent where the shavings rubbed during transit from the manufacturer. If you decide to purchase make them open it at the store.

Holes in My New Tent

If you like holes in your BRAND NEW tent then the Yakima SkyRise is for you. I purchased my FIRST SkyRise in Aug 2018 at REI but didn’t have a chance to use it until Oct. I opened it up only to find a hole on the side of the tent and in the rainfly. The tent itself I like (form mattress is very comfortable) and I have everything Yakima for my truck. Bars, Warrior Rack and SlimShady Awning and they work great. But when it comes to quality control for the tents there seems to be none. So, I called Yakima and they told me that I can take it back to REI or they would send me a replacement tent and rainfly. However, taking the old tent off the frame and sliding the new one on can be a real headache. So I decided to just return it to REI. In November, REI was having a big sale and the Yakima SkyRise tent was marked down lower then when I bought it back in Aug (now I know why), so I thought I would give it another try. I said to myself, what were the chances of getting another tent with a hole in it. Well….I’m batting a thousand. A bigger hole this time around. I can put a patch on it and it probable would be fine but that’s not the point. I realize that the price of this tent is the least expensive roof top tent on the market. However, for almost $1,000 I would still hope for a tent without holes. Yakima will be hearing from me.
