Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Fun Camera I've only used this camera for a couple weeks but it has been a lot of fun. The photos and videos are very high quality. I ran into similar issues as others when I first started using the camera with it getting really hot while filming even though I was using a GoPro recommended sd card. After formatting the SD card a couple times the problem has seemed to stop. The voice activation on this works great and I find it tremendously useful, especially for taking photos. The lack of a display screen has not been an issue for me as you rarely need it during action filming. This little thing is very durable and versatile. I would absolutely suggest this to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best light weight tail cam! I've been using this little action cam for a few months now to capture some ascents of various 14er treks. In the winter, the cold did eat the battery as expected, but still took amazing 4K shots of the entire ridge of Columbia in hurricane force, subzero winds. It's been rockstar performance otherwise. I don't use the sound from the mic, as the wind usually overpowers any other sound. In low light it's not the best. And even still needs some color correction in the best of out door lighting conditions. But for what it is, this is 100% with me on every trip. The app sync to my iPhone and iMac are pretty flawless. Would love to have a second with me. Maybe soon!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Let me down every time. Avoid! Tried over several months to get it work, but it let me down every single time. Sometimes it would just be unresponsive, other times the fresh charge would run down so fast that I could only get a few minutes. Voice commands flaky. Very hard to upgrade firmware. So much of my time wasted trying to make this work and nothing to show for it. Have taken this on all of my climbs this season, and gotten ZERO usable footage. Just dead weight on my head. After this last weekend, where I missed capturing my climb over Eldorado Peak's amazing knife-edge summit, this is one long overdue return. On top of everything, the phone/tablet app that GoPro provides requires you to log into their server before it will connect to the camera sitting right next to you! Unbelievable! So if you are out on an adventure, and out of internet coverage, well then you're just out of luck. You need GoPro's permission to connect the 2 devices sitting right next to each other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall a great little action camera I've been using the Hero5 Session for capturing skiing videos and it's been working great. On really cold days I use a waterproof frame to help block the cold air and it helps the battery last longer. I've been out 2-3 hours in single digits to teens and only record when I'm skiing and the battery has never died on me. It's a quality built little camera and simple to use once you get the settings you like. The ability to adjust all the settings from your phone is really useful. I use iMovie to edit the videos since I can't get GoPro's Quik program to authenticate on my MacBook. iMovie works great for me so it's not an issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy Went through two of these in three months. Both started acting funny a week or so out (button on back quit responding, had trouble turning on video with top button, one quit being able to take photos), then died. The most recent one only lasted 3 weeks. It worked OK on Sunday. Monday, I plugged it into a computer to download, the red led turns on, and nothing happens. Disconnect. Reconnect. 100% dead. Returned to REI. Don't buy it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Junk! Absolute junk. I would not recommend this Go Pro to anyone. The built in wireless is garbage. it will not stay connected to your phone. The connect app for android is worthless too. Too many issues trying to connect phone to go pro. Constantly have to delete phone from go pro memory then re-add. I went on a 5 day trip to Moab UT, and wasn't able to capture half of the trip to due too many tech issues. The battery life is worthless as well. Charged the battery to full and after about 20 minutes of use the battery indicator started blinking telling me to recharge already. I wanted to record all video but it kept switching to rapid shutter taking about 30 photos instead. Once again do not buy this particular model. Go Pro really needs to go back to the drawing board on this thing and start from scratch. Do yourself a favor and just buy a traditional sony or JVC video camera. REI should stop carrying this item.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from blind camera, useless app The camera doesn't have an LCD which is fine because, ideally, you could use an app on your phone or Apple Watch. But the app requires you to login every 24 hours using WiFi or a network connection. If you plan any overnight excursions, you can't access the app. You'll be recording blind. Consumers have complained about the app login in forums and such since October 16. Zero response from GoPro

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Form Factor I purchased a Hero 4 Session for Bowhunting and was not quite satisfied with the picture quality and lack of image stabilization. The Hero5 came out after I had returned the 4 and I purchased it. The Hero5 does have noticeably better video quality and the image stabilization helps significantly but could be better. The wind noise is about the same as with the Hero 4 and can be distracting at times. If you read reviews on the internet and U-Tube comparing this unit with its big brother you will find some areas that it is lacking. The manual setting are still very annoying to change without using a app and your smart phone or tablet and the video downloads are still rather slow. The weakness's are more than offset by the simplicity, small size and overall form factor. I attached mine to the top of my baseball hat using a big sheet of self adhesive velcro on the cap and a curved mount from a mount mix I purchased on Amazon. It balances ok when attached to the brim and is not noticeable when mounted on top. On a hard surface like a bike helmet or mountaineering helmet you would forget it was there. Overall a great product at what I feel is a reasonable price.

Questions & Answers

My truck has a GoPro mounting bracket on the windshield. Will this attach? I also plan to use this while riding a motorcycle. With what's in the box, will it mount to a helmet and or the bike itself?

Asked by: Drew
The included mounts will allow you to attach the camera to your helmet, but not all mounts and housings are interchangeable and this makes it difficult to identify if the HERO5 Session will fit the mount on your dash. Please contact GoPro directly for the most reliable information.

how much continuous video will the camera hold?

Asked by: Adamcr2006
The amount of continuous video that can be shot using this camera depends on many factors such as size of the memory card being used (the HERO 5 Session can accept maximum card of 128GB) and resolution of video being taken. If you are looking to get as much continuous video as possible, use the 128GB microSD card with at least a Class 10 or UHS-I rating.

It's really cute, but 1. does it come with a micro SD card? 2. does shoot stills at intervals? If so, what intervals? tanks

Asked by: KnowWhentoFold
You can include a 128GB Micro-SD card, but this is not included in the purchase. In TimeLapse mode (Photos on interval) can be set to 0.5,1,2,5,10,30 or 60 second intervals.

Dose this camera have the same video and photo resolution as the hero 4 silver or is it better?

Asked by: Austin1
Both the HERO5 Session and the HERO4 Silver will shoot 4K resolution video. The HERO5 can shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second while the HERO5 Silver shoots 4K resolution video at only 14 frames per second. The still camera on the HERO4 Silver is 12 megapixels while the still camera on the HERO5 Session is 10 megapixels.
