Great economical ax for those steep slopes.
For most of my montannering I generally use a straight shaft ax. But there are always those steep slopes that I love to hate and regalress of the suffering, I can’t never avoid. For those cases I used to carry a Black Diamond Viper hammer and adze. I love them. But, I had been close to losing them and not on the slopes as people may think. Therefore, I started to look for something equally good but more economical. Then I saw this Venom hammer and adze on sale. I decided to give them a try. The Viper eccles on some things but for the most part they both performed great. The biggest difference aside from the lower greap is the pick. The Vipers come with reverse curve, while the Venom adze comes with classic curve. and, the hammer comes with something called technical. It is a more straight blade. but, it is still on the classic curve side. The pick can also be replaced and/or exchanged. The pommel can be easily and quickly adjusted all the way down if they need to be swinged or adjusted up to a preferred level if the ax needs to be choked. I will not recommend them for vertical or overhanging climbing. But when the gradient is so great that you need to crawl up on all fours and you need something at a great prize. This is the set to get.
Best All Mountain Tool
This set of tools are by far the best all mountain combination I’ve ever used. They have great balance and feel on alpine ice. The quick lock pommel is comfortable on long sections of alpine slab ice. The adjustment is quick and easy to position for different steepness and conditions. The shaft design anchors well in snow. Also the replaceable picks allow you the option to optimize for conditions from mixed ice and rock to glacier trekking.
A Solid Touring Axe
I love the build of this axe. It's a heavier than the super lightweight touring axes like the Petzel Gully but imo gives you more stability and is easier to plunge while climbing couloirs and steep terrain. Solid weight to be able to self arrest too.
Quality craftsmanship
Good ergonomics and swings well. Fidlock grip gives you something to hold onto so you’re not as worried about dropping it. Great tool for high mountain travel.
Solid
Great piece of gear. A little heavier than expected, but the right tool for Rainier’s Kautz route
Versatile well constructed
Do it's job perfectly, delivered quickly very pleased with it.
We haven’t got to use
We haven’t got to use it yet but just what my husband wanted.
