Bought this after a trip to Yosemite where my husband and I overpacked an ultralight backpack that put a lot of strain on our shoulders. I went to REI and got measured for a pack and tried on most of what they had in stock (with weights). I liked the fit of the Stratos packs the best. This size is big enough for long day trips, and it is small enough to carry-on a plane. We have a baby, and this weekend we used this pack for a bike ride / beach day. It was full, but fit everything, and my back felt fine after 8 miles of biking. While pricey, I know that I won't hesitate to use it. I have a long torso, so the men's sizes fit me better (and my husband can use it too).
The backpack is just beautiful and it seems to be of excellent quality. But after testing it for only 5 days (round trip from home to work, 2x a day), the first problem showed up. Osprey used a material known to be of poor quality and durability to attach the straps to hipbelt pockets. I would love to replace this one by another of the same model but without defect, but since the material is is not good, certainly I will have the same problem again and again, so the only option I have is to exchange it for a different brand and/or model, even though it isn't as beautiful as the Osprey Stratus 34 is.
This is a fantastic midsize backpack. I was in the market for something in the mid 30Ls range for a super long day hike with camera equipment, or a single overnight. So far i've only done the all day and it holds up so well. I really did forget I was wearing it because of how well it wears. This is the first backpack that I actually didn't have an enormous amount of back sweat from due to the design and frame. The only thing I don't like a lot is how much the back frame actually curves because it does cut into space inside the main compartment, especially if you have a full reservoir. I highly recommend this!
This is a fantastic pack for long day hikes or single overnight trips. With about 20 lbs worth of gear, it was very comfortable. At first I wasn't a fan of the rigid back pocket, but it is more durable than a mesh; and is the perfect size for my miscellaneous items that don't fit in the upper pocket. I've read reviews talking about the quality of the materials and the noise it makes but I haven't had any problems with that. Important to note: the panel that makes the sleeping bag compartment at the base of the pack is non-removable. I don't mind this feature but I can understand if others prefer a removable one.
so many packs say they have 6-7 pockets but they they're just flaps open to the elements and prone to spilling out when you lay the pack down. This one is zippered everywhere (except bottle slot on each side). it's about the size (outer dimensions) and volume of a school backpack or daypack, but with fully adjustable and vented back. Was very easy to fit once you adjust the huge hook-n-loop patch for torso height (takes 2min to detach so it's not moving once you get it). bottom compartment is probably too small for a sleeping bag, but that's not this bag's purpose, and I like how it's separate from the main bag. seems to have an excellent warranty. my only complaint is with the hydration. It's a tight squeeze for my insulated 3liter bladder, and the hole to thread the tube through is near impossible to fit a valve through. I found it easier to detach the valve each time. I also tried the Kelty Zyp 38 but that was like one giant compartment and not the zipper heaven of this one.
Love the pack but the quality is not very good. I own a osprey momentus 22, day lite and my son owns a quasar pack. All great packs. This Stratus 34 was purchase in March 2017 and it already has issues with the strap. To me it is a poor design. Osprey has great warranty, but it is a hassle to know this may happen again.
Although larger than many packs promoted for day use, it is relatively light for a pack with a frame. I find the size to be perfect for "all day" hikes where I may be wearing different layers throughout the day and want to have ample food and water. The compartments allow me to quickly find what I need. The design is comfortable, and readily adjusted to distribute the weight well. My only complaint is that I cannot reach my water bottles without taking off the pack. I am usually with friends, or want to sit for a bit, so it hasn't been a major problem. There is room for a camelback, which would be another solution.
Perfect pack for extreme day adventures. I usually have it packed full for most outings with out 16-18 lbs, so I would not consider taking my pack on an overnight. Thoroughly product tested with 9 14ers and hundreds of miles on day PCT & AT day hikes with cycling self shuttles on dirt roads. I don't use a bladder because the hose hole is in the top center, but so you need a non-Osprey center hole bladder or live with a serpentine hose routing that might require a hose extension.
This pack is amazing. The back panel mesh made climbing a recent 1,800 foot elevation gain feel like a fast flat. The sleeping bag clips are great for a chair or extra layer, and the hip pockets easily accommodate my cell phone and some snacks. My only gripe is the size of the pack, which feels small. If you normally use a 20-liter pack, this one is probably great for you. If you are accustomed to more space, I might look to a larger size.
I am a class of 2017 Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker. I have more than 3000 miles on the trails all over this country. This pack is awesome. Half the price of the Zpack arc haul zip I used but twice the quality. Also when my strap broke , Zpacks would not help me out but I heard from everyone on the trail that osprey helped everyone
