Sizing problem!
I have now ordered these twice and not once has the sizing been correct. Does KUHL have a quality assurance problem or a sizing determination problem? I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of these shorts! I was disappointed when I tried them on. My first pair: The tags and the packaging all show Size 30. But, in fact it was a 32". I measured the waist seam with a tape and comes out to 32". Do these shorts run a size higher? Or is this a quality check issue? Did they mis-label/tag a 32" as 30"? I am disappointed. My second pair: the tag shows a 30” with a 8” inseam. I measure them as soon as they arrive and this time the waist measures out to a perfect 30” and fits me well. The inseam is a different story - it measures to 10” whereas the tag shows a 8” inseam. Can Kuhl get this right? I really want these shorts to work for me. This is now going back to REI. Otherwise, I like the styling, the material and the pockets. I just wish the size was right.
Major Disappointment!!
As indicated in other reviews, these shorts have a longer inseam than the 8” pair I ordered and also marked 8” on Kuhl’s tag. I’m a long time Kuhl fan, but quality and process control has tumbled. Unfortunately these will be returned. See photos, 9” on front side of gusset and 10” on back side.
The "everything" pair of shorts
These shorts have some great features. I especially like all the pockets - The two zip pockets on the side are great for wallets - It seems that on the 8" inseam model, the zippered side pockets come around the front of the shorts (unlike the 10 inch - which contain the items on the side). The zipper pockets are great for travel in pick-pocket prone areas. Another great feature are the 2 cellphone pockets. I have an I-phone Xs which is really heavy and kind of large. Cases that attach to a belt are awkward - always bumping into things - Slipping the phone in your pants is really nice and easy. The material and workmanship is top notch - for washing- throw them in the washer and hang them to dry in short time - never noticed any wrinkles. The hanging loop is great. Just wish REI would carry more colors in the 8 inch inseam.
Falls Apart, Useless Warranty
I bought these about a year ago after an REI sales rep told me they were very durable. Within a few months, they started falling apart. My rear pocket ripped out of nowhere. Just a few days ago, I took a light fall onto a rock while hiking, and it ripped a big hole in the bottom. Kuhl support won't accept my warranty claim and told me to buy a new pair. These shorts will not handle any outdoor activities other than a walk on a sidewalk.
Great Fit and Material
These shorts fit perfectly — I’m 6’2” 200lbs normally wearing a 34 waist and these 34 with 8” inseam fit just right. Probably my favorite feature of the Renegade shorts is that they’re not baggy and not too tight. They’re great for casual wear and errands, but also for hiking and climbing. It has enough pockets, one zippered, but I jut needed the 2 in the front. The material is water resistant as I discovered when giving my dog a bath. As far as length, I have long legs and both the 8” and 10” inseams fit well with the 10” coming to my knee and 8” sitting a few inches higher (but still not too high). The Renegade shorts are great and now I own 3 pair in different colors!
Clasp Comes Unsnapped Too Easily
Nice pants. However, several issues. First is the clasp comes unsnapped too easily. I've seen this complaint on the 10 inch inseam shorts; you'd think Kuhl would have made a better choice of snap or would have fixed the problem. May return them for this reason. Second is the back pockets have velcro closures, which are kind of a pain. I would pay extra for zippered closures, which offer more protection and are easier to use. Third is these are 8 inch inseams, whereas I find 7 inch inseams less restricting and more comfortable for movement. I have a pair of Ex-Officio shorts I bought over ten years ago, and they meet all of these requirements and are perfect. The Kuhl shorts are pretty good - seem well-made overall and nice material, just a few problems with them.
Rolled the dice and Happy I did
I was looking for a pair of shorts which didn't have flap pockets on the front/side. I came across these when looking at a variety of options. I ordered them online, but the delivery was delayed so I contracted Customer service to change to an in-store pickup. I have worn these shorts a few times since I received them and they are quite comfortable. They wear well, have great pocked, and appear as flat faced shorts, yest still have side zipper pockets that are quite useful. There is also a "hidden" pocket that holds my cell phone very comfortably and help change weight distribution on my body. They are light weight, easy to clean, and over all look great. I am glad I bought these shorts and they will be well used going forward.
Great shorts, but size up
Well made, and a lifetime fan...but just make sure to order one size up in the waist.
Ordered Size 30, tagged as 30; but measures 32"!!
I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of these shorts! I was disappointed when I tried them on. The tags and the packaging all show Size 30. But, in fact it is a 32". I measured the inner seam with a tape and comes out to 32". I had ordered two of them and they both are coming in at 32". Do these shorts run a size higher? Or is this a quality check issue? Did they mis-label/tag a 32" as 30"? I am disappointed. Otherwise, I like the styling, the material and the pockets. I just wish the size was right. Now, do I order a 28"?
Bawlin'
I was going the through the process of gradually transitioning to a "big boy" wardrobe while simultaneously needing to fill a gap in my outdoor/hiking shorts selection. Traditionally I would wear exclusively athletic shorts which I had grown quite fond of because of how lightweight and breathable they are. Alas, my needs started shifting as I delved further and further out into nature. I was at first hesitant to buy these because an 8 inch inseam is shorter with the bottom a few inches above the knees than any shorts I have worn in the past. But they were not too short to immediately rule out. I ended up purchasing them and have fallen in love with them. They are my go-to shorts for anything casual around town and are equally equipped to go backwoods biking and hiking in warm temps. Being a shorter short (at least compared to what I was used to) they are lighter and more breathable, and that means a lot in the humidity of central Florida. The pockets are well thought out and easy to access and sufficiently deep so nothing would fall out unless you or the earth tilts upside down. A note on waist:thigh size. I am a size 34 waist with larger than average hips/thighs and a size 34 in this was just not going to happen. I upped to a size 36 which gives plenty of space for hips and thighs but must be worn with a belt. Worth it.
