New QD3 compared to the previous model
So when REI came out with the new version I was excited that they said they resolved some of the minor complaints that I had with the 2014 version. Due to the rock solid return policy (I have a few months left to return the 2014 model) I bought the new 2017 model so I could do a direct comparison. If you're a fan of the Quarter Dome line of tents you won't be disappointed with the new updated version. When set up side by side the first thing you notice is how much roomier the front end is. The inside livability has drastically increased due to the slight redesign of the pole setup. Color coding the poles and tent corners was a great decision as well. One of my complaints about the old fly attachment points was addressed by adding buckles. This makes attaching the fly after staking and pitching everything else a breeze. They made the right call by getting rid of the "vestuble" at the head and increasing the vestuble sizes on the sides. They went from kinda a squeeze your gear here to actually having a good size area for keeping you gear. I don't know how but it looks like they did this without really increasing the overall footprint of the entire set up. Replacing the rip stop panels on the roof with mesh was a good call. It'll make for a much better experience on a clear night. The new design also includes reflective guy line and enough stakes for everything (the old model needed the extra guy line for the fly and additional stakes for the same). One of the reservations I had about buying the new model was the two stakes required for each vestuble. I thought it would be bulky and cumbersome. Not at all. The new vestuble configuration works really nice and is a breeze to set up. The other nice feature is that this model now has a true bathtub floor. No more taped seam at ground level all the way around. I do have two small complaints about the new model. first is the size of the tabs that attach the tent to the poles. The new style have a slightly narrower base which makes disconnecting just not quite as easy as the last model. Not that it's hard, just not as easy. last is the claim that with the new pole/ vestuble design is their claim that this is a no drip style. I don't think so. when looking down you can see that the floor of the tent is still slightly wider than the end of the pole/top of fly and vestuble. If it's raining I do think the tent floor could get wet. Overall this is a solid upgrade over previous versions. It's a great tent at a great value. I'm glad I was able to have both set up side by side and really looking forward to spending some great nights in my new back-country home!

Don't Buy
Great tent... until you realize that the design of the poles, which includes a spoke/hub, causes the shockcord to stretch out incredibly fast. Purchased this tent 3 years ago and the poles are no longer usable due to the shock cord stretching out. The pole design causes this to happen as when you fold the poles up at the spoke/hub it forces the cord to stretch alot. Highly disappointed.

Awesome space to weight ratio

Only used this one night so far but I love it! I was going to purchase the Big Agnes but the durability reviews concerned me. I have a much older Quarter Dome 3 but the rainfly was ruined. This one just happened to come out. Super easy to set up and more than enough space for 2. Obviously not the lightest of tents out there but I'll take the extra weight with what I think is a more durable tent vs the Big Agnes. Can't wait to use this in Yosemite this July!

Obsessed after yearsss of use

Have had this tent for 3 or 4 years and it has been a dream. My partner is extremely tall, so this is a 3 person tent was a no brainer for us. It has held up like a dream. We camp and backpack with it many many times each summer and no problems yet! We are able to split it up easily between the 2 of us for a backpacking trip. I am also able to set it up by myself in a few minutes. Yes, be a gentle with the zippers... have not had any problems but can potentially see why they may get problematic. There are so many convenient pockets on the inside, it's extremely helpful to stay organized. Still stoked on this purchase after a few years.

In this tent I trust

I picked this up on Thursday (with 25% off) and took it out on Friday to the Goat Lake wilderness area. One person can set up this tent fairly easy and the color system takes the guessing out of it. We didn't realize that 20% chance of showers meant pouring rain and a windstorm of 70+mph winds. The side facing the wind was blown to the point it laid on top of us but the tent poles held up. After 20m+ of holding the poles down the wind finally let up. A couple of stakes were supplanted but there was no damage to the tent. We found one stake about 30ft away. Everything in the tent was dry. Testament to the quality of this product. A KEEPER!!!

Great tent especially for gale-force winds

Very good tent. Used it during a recent visit to North Manitou Island (Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore), during which we had 2 days of heavy rain and gale-force winds. Plenty of room for 2 persons, but it might be a bit tight for 3 persons.. The quick set-up was "key" since the rain was coming down in buckets. Looking forward to use it again.

Awesome 3p/family backpacking option

Light enough to legit backpack with, small footprint (packed size), very airy, awesome pockets and attic. The size is perfect for me (6'2"), wife (5'4") and our boy (5yo but tall). Very comfortable, easy to get in and out of. Setup and teardown was pleasant on first use. I normally do not like hubbed poled, but a very helpful REI employee insisted I set it up in the store, and I was impressed with how simple it was. Much more graceful that some hubbed setups I've seen. The materials are all VERY thin and lightweight. Footprint is highly suggested, as I would not want to tear up the floor.

light and easy setup

The weight is right on point with other brands for backpacking. Setup was quick and pain free. Airflow was perfect as no condensation occurred. Three sleeping pads fit with minimal overlapping. However, the 3rd person was a 6 year old. 3 adults would fit, rather warm and snug. Get comfortable because rubbing shoulders will happen with 3 adults.

Seemed great at first...

I received this tent as a xmas gift in 2019. We've used it around 50 nights. It was great until the zippers started failing. The zippers failed on both sides of the tent at the same time. I called REI this summer to see if they could replace the tent and was told no b/c it was outside of the 1 year warranty. I've never had tent zippers fail so fast. I tried tightening the zippers and that didn't work. The only option at this point is utilize a third party company to have the tent zippers repaired. I don't want to do this because the elastic in the poles are also starting to stretch out. I will purchase from a different company going forward for better customer service.

Great so far

I have an old style Quarter Dome 2+ and needed a second tent. I've been very happy with my old one and my Cub Scout could set it up by himself. The new Quarter Dome 3 is much roomier inside. I particularly like all the pockets for keys, phones, wallets, flashlights, etc. I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of setting up the new pole system which is shock-corded as a single unit, and not multiple separate poles. My first night camping, the tent withstood 50mph winds (with all 4 guy lines attached and staked out tight) while 3 other tents in the Troop were destroyed. It's definitely a light weight tent, mostly screen with a very light feeling rain fly. It held up in poor conditions once...we'll see how durable it is over time.

Expected better construction

I would have to agree with the other reviews that talk about the poor construction. I bought this tent several years ago with great intentions of doing more backpacking (who hasn’t done this before?!). Getting ready for an upcoming backpacking trip I just set the tent up and the rainfly basically deteriorated. Nearly all of the velcro attachments fell off the rainfly and large sections of the seamseal basically feel off. After my last trip I followed REI instructions about tent storage. I can appreciate applying new seamseal at some point but I’ve only used the tent on 4 trips for a total of 8 nights. Very disappointed.
