I have used Flash pad for a while, decided to have this newer version for my wife, ordered one from REI.COM, but the size was 90 inches long while it says Regular! Talked to customer support, but then she couldn't believe it when I say this regular pad is 90" long, asked me to bring it to local REI. Went to REI Dublin, CA and showed them how long it is, before exchange it with another one. Then just in case, I opened it up to confirm its size on new one, darn, it is same 90" long. They opened up all other regular pads and all of them were same, so we tried to see how long the Long size pad looks like. Guess what, it was 100" long. Something should've happened on the lot as I see there are others who don't have this issue. I really wanted to have this one as it is light, 30% sale, and also I have air sack for this pad as I don't like to use my breathes to inflate other kinds...
The reviewers who state the pad is incorrectly sized at 90” long are measuring it before inflating it. The "regular" size Flash Pad is indeed 90” long when DEFLATED. When INFLATED, the pad shrinks to 72” long as air fills each chamber. (Note that it also goes from a few mm thick when deflated to 2” when inflated....) I suspect the old (green) model did not undergo such a dramatic change due to its rail design. As for the pad itself, I’ve used it on ~4 weeks’ worth of trips by now and enjoy it very much. I haven’t had any problems with leaks yet.
After fixing some pinholes which were the fault of a trip to Baja with its many spiners finding their way in to my tent, I have now three times had to repair significant leaks at the edges of the waffle welds on the pad. This is three consecutive leaks without using the pad, I fix one, re-inflate to see if it's a successful repair, then another weld will be gushing bubbles as seen in my vid. I am only using lung power to inflate, so I think the problem must be in the manufacturing process. As I bought on holiday in the US ( and lost my receipt in transit ) I'm not easily able to return it, which is kind of a bummer, but here's my warning for you all.
This went flat on my first night out. I used it in a tent , with a ground sheet ! I never used it outside of this environment and still wound up with pin holes. It's a good thing that I bought the repair kit. The next day I took it into the lake and found two pin holes, so I made the repairs. The next few nights it held air, but still bled off over the night. I've owned a thermarest self inflating pad for 18 years and only had to repair it once. I'll be returning this. I will say that I have high regard for the products that REI puts their name on, this just isn't one of them.
Bought this for a week long trip for backpacking in Big Bend National Park. Held up for the week and was very comfortable. Since then, I've used it on two or three backpacking trips and it consistently leaks. I've repaired a few pin holes but the welds leak and only stays inflated for thirty minutes. Super disappointed in the quality of this item for the cost. Called a store to see if I could exchange it but it was two weeks after the typical year warranty. I only purchased this item because of the employee's personal testimony when I was looking at other sleeping pads in store. Overall, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.
I used this the Flash while hiking the Southern half of the AT. The comfort of the pad is great as is the packability. Also this pad is much quieter than most inflatables. However, after 550 miles and daily use the pad developed pin holes in one of the welds. After several attempted repairs another weld started to fail in the same way. Patching and sealing the weld areas is tenuous at best. So for the next 470 miles the pad was less than reliable and required re-inflation several times during the night and continuous follow up repairs. Because of the comfort, and compactness, I may try another in the future.
I'm 6'2", 250 lbs and a side sleeper so I was a bit trepidatious about this pad. It was recommended by a friend and I had a chance to try it in the store and it seemed good so I got the Long Wide version and took it out camping for 3 nights and was very impressed. My last pad was a very old-school Thermarest and the ease in inflating and deflating this pad was a revelation, as was the shockingly small package it rolls into. I won't claim I slept as well as on my mattress at home but it exceeded my expectations for such a thin and compact pad. For those curious, I did not find the pad to be noisy at all.
I really like everything about this pad, weight, shape, size, speed of inflation, etc. Except the first time I inflated it I noticed it was losing air, after further inspection one of the interior welds was leaking, I patched it and thought it was ok. Nope, on the first test I noticed ANOTHER weld did the same thing. Based on other reviews I'm convinced this is not a common occurance but it did happen to me so be aware of that. I am going to give it another chance and am going through the exchange process now. Hopefully this next one will be ok because like I said I really like the specs and everything about this pad. Fingers crossed.
I bought this at the Garage Sale this weekend in Greenville, SC. I looked at it in the store but did not completely stretch it out as it seemed a little longer than the regular sized but not huge so I bought it. The stuff sack states it is a long wide and is 78 x 25 x 2 inches which matches REI's website. However that is definitely not the case. It actually measures 96 x 30 x 2 inches. Any one else had this issue? Not sure what to do with it.
Great size and weight, packs small and neat. Great insulation for the size, good valves, but leaks at welds. For some reason only on the side that has the valves. Love REI branded gear, but this one is a miss unfortunately. I have a few of these mats, and all of them have 10+ patches. The patches you see on this mat are the ones i put on after running out of red ones lol. Just went to sort my kit for upcoming trip and found 5 (!) new leaks. Officially giving up on this mat.
